Jquery - MVC 2 - Finding Best Implementation Of Status / Update / Generic Message Delivery And JavaScript Modal Display
Oct 5, 2010
For an MVC 2 app that relies on many partial views and almost exclusively uses Ajax for POSTs/GETs, what would be the best way to implement the setting, passing, retrieval and display (using a JavaScript modal) of these messages?
My forms all POST (by way of jQuery $.ajax) to actions that return partial views (html) that are used to update a in the "success:" part of the $.ajax function.
I was hoping for some sort of mechanism in the master view that could "listen" for any messages that any of these partial views might be "delivering"--through their ViewData, for instance.

I am using VSS 2005 & webforms with AJAX Control Toolkit. I am using Update panels for saving different parts of my form. Problem being I update the user with the status setting either a label or literal value.
This value is visible on the form untill the page is refreshed. Is there any way to display a message and fade it away after some seconds ? Would be a life saver for me =)
I am using VSS 2005 but I don't think a simple fade would require much intellisense with JQuery ?

I am in the process of redesigning our main product, a knowledge database system for clients to access clinical and specialist advice articles. There is a requirement to add "Social Networking" to this allowing users to connect and post remarks etc...
This is somewhat similar to the Facebook wall scenario - where Articles, Photos, Groups, Products, Events, ActivityFeed can all have comments. I am at a lose as to the database design I would need to implement this. All comments must allow for Moderation/Approval/Spam Reporting etc...
I originally thought a individual table for each Comments entity ex: ArticleComment, ProductComment would work as the comments themselves are not all directly related. Each table having the same exact columns. But this makes life abit awkward as then this creates a separation between something that for all purposes is the same i.e. They are all comments.
The other design idea was to have a single Comment table with an "arc" type relationship to related tables with FK references back to the source.
The other option was to have a single Comment table with an Object Type and XID but this breaks the rules of relation and does not all for referential integrity.
I am at a lose and don't know what to do. I have asked over at SQLCentral.com and all I have done is raised more questions than answers about what to do.
Design 1: This would require exact copies of this table for all the entities.

CREATE TABLE dbo.PhotoComment

CONSTRAINT [FK_ArticleComment_CommentID_CommentType] FOREIGN KEY (CommentID, CommentType) REFERENCES dbo.Comment(CommentID, CommentType)
)
Design 3: The one that breaks the rules
CREATE TABLE dbo.Comment
(
CommentID int IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
ObjectType char(1) NOT NULL, /* A = Article, P = Photo etc... */
XID int NOT NULL, /* Would be the ID of the main entity being queried. */

IsSpam bit NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_Comment_IsSpam] DEFAULT (0),

I want a similar behavior of "confirm delete" option in ASP.Net Gridview, as this questions shows How to add a "confirm delete" option in ASP.Net Gridview ? but using Jquery Confirm Box.
I'm having a lot of problem with postback behavior and asp.net page flow.
I want domething simple as:
<asp:Button ID="ButtonRemove" runat="server" Text="<%$ Resources:Localizacao, BUTTON_REMOVE %>" OnClick="ButtonRemove_Click" OnClientClick="displayConfirmDialog();/>
how I can fire the OnClick event in javascript, or how a can put a Panel as confirm dialog?
*today I use ajaxcontroltoolkit, but as this was discontinued I'm trying to figure out some more elegant alternative.

I have a nested table structure, a part of which is rendered by a ajax call that returns HTML from the server. The markup looks like this:
<tr>
<td><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0">
<%-- Content will be displayed from ajax call 1 --%>
<%-- Content will be displayed from ajax call 2 --%>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
.. more html
The ajax call returns the following html
<tr>
<td class="wpss_checkboxtd"><img width="16" height="16" src="../../images/someimg.png"></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="wpss_checkboxtd"><img width="16" height="16" src="../../images/someimg.png"></td>
</tr>
In jquery, I need to insert this html for which i need an element to traverse to so that I can call the html() of that element. Unfortunately, if I use a div, for example:
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0">
<div id="divAjax1">
<%-- Content will be displayed from ajax call 1 --%>
</div>
<div id="divAjax2">
<%-- Content will be displayed from ajax call 2 --%>
</div>
</table>
the classes are setup such that the div or a span causes other issues.

I have an ASP.NET button. When the button is clicked, I'd like a modal popup to display after the server-side code for the button runs. I don't want to use the ASP.NET Ajax control toolkit modal popup extender.
With ASP.NET Ajax, I can hook into the end request event. Is there a way to do this without ASP.NET Ajax. just jQuery? I basically want to run some javascript after the server side click code runs, after the postback.

I'm using the ASP.Net Validation controls and I want to display the Validation Summary in a JQuery Dialog instead of the native javascript alert messagebox. I've found this solution (aspsnippets) by overriding the clientside WebForm_OnSubmit() function:
<script type="text/javascript">
function WebForm_OnSubmit() {
if (typeof (ValidatorOnSubmit) == "function" && ValidatorOnSubmit() == false) {
$("#validation_dialog").dialog({
title: "Validation Error!",
modal: true,
resizable: false,
[Code] ....
The WebForm_OnSubmit() function is being rendered by the BaseValidator control and in the form tag te following attribute is being added: onsubmit="javascript:return WebForm_OnSubmit();
I am running into a problem on a page which has an UpdatePanel. The input field with the validator (1 to make it simple) is in a Panel within an UpdatePanel. The Panel is set to Visible=False at the first Page Load. There's a button inside the UpdatePanel which makes the Panel with the Validator Visible.
When this happens, the WebForm_OnSubmit() function and the onsubmit="javascript:return WebForm_OnSubmit(); attribute of the form tag are not being rendered because it's an AJAX callback and the form tag is outside the updatepanel (in a master page), so the validation summary will not be shown in the jquery dialog.
Validation is being performed, so the validation summary wil be shown in a div on a page, but the validation is not being called by the WebForm_OnSubmit() function in this case, because it's not being rendered.
Here's the markup of the page:
<asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel1" runat="server">
<ContentTemplate>
<asp:Button ID="btnNew" runat="server" Text="New" />
<asp:Panel ID="pnlEdit" runat="server">
<table>
[Code] ....
So, when the validators are not visible at the first load and they will be made visible by an AJAX callback, the WebForm_OnSubmit() function and the onsubmit="javascript:return WebForm_OnSubmit(); attribute of the form tag are not being rendered on the pag. Because of that, the WebForm_OnSubmit() function will not be called and the validation summary will not be shown in the JQuery dialog (although it is being shown in a div on the page). How can I get the Validation Summary to be shown in de JQuery dialog in this case?
Is there another function that has to be overriden for this case? I know I can use a Full Postback for the New button and then all the stuff needed is being rendered on the page, or I can make the panel not visible by using a style, but I don't prefer that because there are a lot of pages with this situation.
One solution is to use a dummy textbox with a dummy validator (with a dummy validationgroup) of which I set the display to none. Then this dummy validator will cause the the WebForm_OnSubmit() function and the onsubmit="javascript:return WebForm_OnSubmit(); attribute of the form tag to be rendered.

Current Background: I have a ASP.NET VB form connected to a database. In the database, there is a field called TourCount. This count decrimates by 1 everytime a user submits a form.
Goal: When the TourCount reaches 0, all registrations must close. However, at the moment, TourCount continues to decrimate into negative numbers. When TourCount reaches 0, I would like a message to appear above the form saying "Registration Closed".
Current Attempt: I have tried a few things, but I'm not sure where it's going. I don't receive a config error message, but it's never functioning correctly either. I'm not sure where or what type of script I should be using. My logic says, when TourCount is less than or equal to zero, display a text string via the id called "Message".
