Multithreading - Page Running On IIS Make Use Of Multicore Processors?

Jul 8, 2010

I've got an ASP.net page that runs a script which takes anywhere between 1 second and 10 minutes to run dependant on the parameters passed in to it. My question is, if the server is multicore, will this script automatically make use of all the processors, or is it constricted to one.

Multithreading - .net ThreadPool - Long Running Operation.

Jan 27, 2010

My application is a asp.net 3.5 running on iis 6 (windows 2003)

This application is serving 1000's of users daily (100-500 users online).

I want to send an email newsletter to customers weekly.

Around 200,000 emails every time.

This is the code im using:

ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(new WaitCallback(AsyncProcessMailerQueue), null);

private static void AsyncProcessMailerQueue(object data)[code]....

When testing this locally (on my dev machine) i see the application is working alot slower.

Is there a better way to write this code? Should i use ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem or create a new thread using Thread t = new Thread(new ThreadStart(DoWork)); ? Will it be better to create a totally seperate application for the purpose of sending the newsletters. will that help if ill run this application on the same machine?

i've seen other posts here talking about ThreadPool vs Thread but its seem no one is sure which is better.

What's Standard Practice To Make Sure One Slow Running Page Doesn't Affect Other Pages

Aug 31, 2010

Page A loads very fast; Page B loads very slowly and does some CPU-intensive things on the web server. I noticed that if someone is loading Page B, then Page A also loads slowly - for ALL users. What is the standard practice for making sure this doesn't happen? If multiple users are loading Page B at the same time then Page A is ridiculously slow. Is there an IIS setting, web.config setting, or hardware configuration I could use to make sure that the fast-loading pages aren't bogged down by other pages that need more time to load?

Use AJAX Or Multithreading To Speed Up Page Load?

Jan 30, 2011

I have a page that has 5 sections. Each section takes about 1 second to render.

Page_Load()
{
RenderSection1(); //1 sec
RenderSection2(); //1 sec
RenderSection3(); //1 sec
RenderSection4(); //1 sec
RenderSection5(); //1 sec
}

I would like to speed up the loading of this page. But at the same time make sure that it don't slow down performance of other parts of web application and also do not crash the IIS.

The are several approaches:

Use AJAX requests. Needs to be MVC style requests to Controller or Web Service. Using UpdatePanel around each section will not work - since if I try to submit refreshes to multiple UpdatePanels at the same time using approach here: [URL], the last request will always win: [URL] Use ASP.NET threads described in answer to right way to create thread in ASP.NET web application. So I would use a separate thread for each call: RenderSection1, RenderSection2, etc... Move the logic that takes up time, usually DB requests, into Application Service class in another DLL or External Web Service. Something like

OrderDTO GetDataForViewOrder(int orderID)
{
}

and use multiple threads in that DLL. This approach seems to provide the best scalability, but also introduces UI details into Application Services layer.

Multithreading - When Serve A Webpage -, Can Render The Various Controls On The Page In Parallel

Aug 10, 2010

When I serve an ASP.NET page, can I render the various controls on the page in parallel?

I have a few Telerik controls (RadGrids) on the page and when I step through the page being loaded, it seems as though the controls are databound and rendered serially.

Maybe this behavior is because I am hooked in with the debugger.

Is there anyway to load the page and have select controls build on separate threads? Is that even conceptually possible or must it be done sequentially?

Count The Number Of Processors In .NET 2.0 - System.Management Access Denied

Nov 11, 2010

I was using some code to try to count the number of processors in .NET 2.0:

internal static int GetNumberOfProcessors()
{
List<string> list = new List<string>();
ManagementClass mgmt = new ManagementClass("Win32_Processor");
foreach (ManagementObject obj in mgmt.GetInstances())
{
string item = obj.Properties["SocketDesignation"].Value.ToString();
if (!list.Contains(item))
{
list.Add(item);
}
}
return list.Count;
}

and it blew up like this:

[ManagementException: Access denied ]
System.Management.ManagementException.ThrowWithExtendedInfo(ManagementStatus errorCode) +377984
System.Management.ManagementScope.InitializeGuts(Object o) +654
System.Management.ManagementScope.Initialize() +162
System.Management.ManagementObject.Initialize(Boolean getObject) +492
System.Management.ManagementClass.GetInstances(EnumerationOptions options) +122
System.Management.ManagementClass.GetInstances() +6

This code runs fine locally on cassini, but blows up on our beta server.

How To Make A Call To A Potentially Long-running Operation

Jul 23, 2010

When an ASPX page needs to make a call to a potentially long-running operation (lengthy DB query, call to a remote webservice, etc.), I use RegisterAsyncTask, so the IIS worker thread is returned to the pool, rather than being tied up for the duration of the long-running operation. However ASMX webservices don't have a RegisterAsyncTask function. When an ASMX webservice needs to call a potentially long-running operation, how can I implement the same behavior as RegisterAsyncTask? Note: the ASMX webservice is implemented as a script-service: returning json to a direct jQuery/ajax call. Therefore, I cannot use the "BeginXXX" approach described by MSDN, since that implements the asynchronous behavior within the generated client-stub (which isn't used when calling the webservice directly via ajax). EDIT: Adding source code: implemented the BeginXXX/EndXXX approach listed in John's answer. The synchronous "Parrot" function works fine. But the asynchronous "SlowParrot" function gives an internal server error: "Unknown web method SlowParrot"

WebService1.asmx:

Vb.net - .net Multithreading With Synclock?

Jan 31, 2011

i have some test code which i run at every load of a page in my asp.net website

this is the code

Sub TryThreads()
Dim t1 = New Thread(AddressOf TryLock)
t1.Priority = ThreadPriority.Lowest[code]...

the "dotrace" simply add a record to a log table in the db.now the right result would be that i should have the entries in the db in order "entered","exiting","exited"but actually when i look in the db i see first 2 "entered" then 2 "exiting" etc.meaning that the multithreading is working ok, but not the synclock is that correct?the real code will be adding records to the db and might be called from several pages of different sessions, but the same code must not run twice concurrently.

EDIT:in response to Sashas wonderful post i changed my code to a class (it was in a module) and now it looks like this:

Public Class CheckClass
Property LockObject As Object
Get [code]...

if i open multiple pages at once, they still clash some times. but if i'm correct, the issue is now not with the synclock as much as with the httpruntime.cache, because when using a standard property, on one page, the code works 100%. so how can i make sure that 2 threads, even from totally different sessions never run the trylock simultaneously?

Multithreading - How Are Threads Tied To Requests Through Http.sys, IIS

Jan 29, 2011

I'm currently reading a lot about node.js. There is a frequent comparison between servers using a traditional thread per request model (Apache), and servers that use an event loop (Nginx, node, Tornado).

I would like to learn in detail about how a request is processed in ASP.NET - from the point it is received in http.sys all the way up to it being processed in ASP.NET itself. I've found the MSDN documentation on http.sys and IIS a little lacking, but perhaps my google-fu is weak today. So far, the best resource I have found is a post on Thomas Marquardt's Blog.

Could anyone shed more light on the topic, or point me to any other resources?

I've tried setting the page to async and running the wcf in async mode but the content still fails to display.

Databases :: Losing Connection When Running Long Running Oracle Procedure?

Jul 1, 2010

I am executing a long-running Oracle stored procedure from .NET. The procedure takes about three hours to run. Ideally, the user should be able to kick off the procedure, close the browser, and come back later to check the results.

The problem is that the connection to the Oracle procedure is lost after exactly an hour. As you would expect, the Oracle procedre runs to completion if it is executed from SQL Plus. Strangely enough, it will also run to completion if I run in debug mode on my local machine (I start two threads, one of which executes the procedure. I set a breakpoint on the second thread).

Here is my connection string:

data source= (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=serverx)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=TestSID)))

Some relevant sections from web.config:

<sessionState mode="InProc" cookieless="false" timeout="3000" stateNetworkTimeout="72000"/>
<httpRuntime executionTimeout="18000" maxRequestLength="2097151" />

Any thoughts as to why the connection is being lost in exactly an hour, and what I can do to maintain the connection until the procedure finishes?

Slow Of First Page - Running On Windows / IIS

Mar 16, 2011

I'm more into the LAMP stack, but I've been asked to work on a site that is running Windows and IIS 2008. I'm a beginner with IIS, so please be patient with me on this, and please ask me to provide more information if that is needed to determine. I read the answer here (Slow first page load on asp.net site), but it seems like if I go to the site with one browser it takes long to load the first page, then fast on all other pages, then if I open up another browser, it's the same thing, so it's not something that is saved on the server, but per session? Is there a way to have the application running at all times? Right now it is taking 12 to 15 seconds for the first page to load. I have access to the WebControlCenter and FTP.

Web Forms :: Running Aspx Page Along With Asp Pages?

Feb 17, 2010

I am trying to add aspx pages to my website which already has Asp Pages. I made a virtual directory and pointed to existing website where I have placed new Aspx files along with previous Asp files. Now when I try to execute the file. It runs good in first attempt, however, when I click a couple of times of "click me" button browser keeps on processing and does displays my message again.

Code in Default.aspx.vb
Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Label1.Text = "Heello how are you?"
Code in Default.aspx
<%@ Page Language="vb" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeBehind="Default.aspx.vb" Inherits="WebApplication1._Default" %>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" >
<head runat="server">
<title>Untitled Page</title>
</head>
<body>
<form id="form1" runat="server">
<div>
</div>
<asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" Text=""></asp:Label> <br /><br />
<asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" Text="Click Me" />
</form>
</body>
</html>

I initially ran this code in Visual Studio 2008 and it executed well. Later on i transferred my files along with existing Asp Page? Version configured in IIS for ASp.Net is 2.0.50727 Visual Studio 2008 To clarify further, I would like to know, if I am proceeding in right direction to excute my Aspx pages along with Asp? Secondly, why does my browser keeps on processing if I click the button second or third time ? I am not getting exceptions or errors.. And have no idea of reading logs for the program..
