Session Variable Object Gets Deleted On Postback?
Feb 20, 2010
I have made something like the following code:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Label1.Text = Session["loginid"].ToString();
}
protected void delete_click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
delete("mail1",Session["loginid"]);
}
private int delete(string mailid, string user)
{
System.IO.Directory.Delete(Server.MapPath(@"~files" + user + @"" + mailid), true);
}
When i press the delete button, everything works fine and the folder gets deleted. but after that when page postbacks again then a NullRefrenceException is raised at Label1.Text = Session["loginid"].ToString(); why is it happening...?? When I am not using this Directory.Delete() method everything is working fine and session variables are not set to null. When I traced my application I found that After Directory.Delete() method Session variables were intact and I was able to use those session variables in the processing after Directory.Delete(). But as soon as the page postbacks all session variables are set to null. And this problem doesn't appear when i m not using this delete() method. The folder I m deleting is in my project's folder. I m running this website using Visual Studio.

I have a calculation in a gridview rowdatabound event that stores a value in a session variable. The problem is that after the page is viewed the first time, the value continues to accumulate each time it is posted back. How can I calculate the value the first time and stop it from continuting to recalculate and add to itself each time the page is reloaded?

I have many controls like dropdown, radiobuttonlist, etc on my page and I put all these controls inside the update panel so that the page doesn't look to be posting back when something is selected. Now the working on the page is very smooth. But the session object isn't getting refreshed even if I postback to the server and as a result even if the users are working on the page they are being sent to the login screen after 20 mins.
Is there anyway where I could put all the controls in update panel and still refresh the session after any postback(dropdown selection)

Currently in an .aspx file, I am storing a value (filename that was created in that session) in an hidden text box. When the user clicks on the "Print" labeled Hyperlink control, it opens the file that was stored in the hidden text box control. But when the user goes to different screen (in the same session), I loose the filename value that is stored in the hidden text box control. So I would like to store the filename variable in a session variable. So that if the user leaves this .aspx file and comes back to this .aspx file I can load the value into the hidden text box from the session variable.

I am storing a custom "Organisation" object as a session variable. One of the properties of the Organisation object is "OrganisationID" (integer). I have a DataSource that requires a parameter value to run, and I want to use a SessionParameter to populate this. In a previous version, I stored the OrganisationID directly as a session variable. In that case, I could easily access it like this:
[Code]....
However, how do I now access the OrganisationID property of an "Organisation" type session variable (called "Organisation")? I have tried this, which does not seem to work: <asp:SessionParameter Name="OrganisationID" SessionField="Organisation.OrganisationID" Type="Int32" />

I'm creating an HttpCookie, setting only the name and value and not the expires property, then adding it to the response. Simple enough. The cookie is created (but not persisted) as expected. The problem is when the session changes for some reason (like the website was rebuilt, or I rebuilt my app when debugging) then the cookie stays around. I want the cookie to be valid for only the original session it was created on.
According to MSDN it says: "If you do not specify an expiration limit for the cookie, the cookie is not persisted to the client computer and it expires when the user session expires." I guess I don't know exactly what "session expires" encompasses. I figure the cookie gets deleted after 20 min when the session expires. But should the cookie get deleted if the session it was created on doesn't exist anymore for any number of reasons? The only time I've seen the cookie get deleted is when the user closes all browser windows and opens a new one.
If this is all true, I may have to store the original session id ("ASP.NET_SessionId") in the cookie, then check it against the current session id, if they're different, then delete the cookie or create a new one.
Here's the code (the only difference between my cookie and the one in the MSDN examples is I'm storing multiple values in the cookie):
private void SaveValuesToCookie(string[] names, string[] values)
{
HttpCookie cookie = new HttpCookie("MyCookie");
for (int i = 0; i < names.Length; i++)
{
string name = names[i];
cookie.Values[name] = values[i];
}
Response.Cookies.Add(cookie);
}
private string GetValueFromCookie(string name)
{
HttpCookie cookie = Request.Cookies["MyCookie"];
if (cookie == null)
return null;
return cookie.Values[name];
}

I have a site that show infomation that are contained in div blocks. The info is taken from a database so the user can change the info or delete it. When the user deletes a div block i want to use jQuery to animate that its disappearing and also that its deleted from the database. How can i do this without doing a postback, i dont want the site to reload, i just want the Div block to disappear visually and be gone from the database at the same time. Would i use Ajax update panel to achieve this ?

I have an ASP.NET 2.0 site that stores a user's ID in session to indicate that they are logged in. In some situations, the user doesn't appear to stay logged in. I've been monitoring traffic in Fiddler, and some details I've found: The problem is 100% repeatable on an older laptop of mine when running IE7 and the project manager's laptop when running IE7. The problem does not ever occur on my current laptop running IE7, or any of these laptops when running FF. The problem occurs only in production--not on development, internal staging, or client staging. Production is the only load balanced environment, but the repeatability noted above makes me question load balancing as a factor.
When the page which sets Session("ID") = 1 sends a response back to the client, I can see a "Set-Cookie" header in all cases, which is creating the ASP.Net_Session_Id cookie (and it's HttpOnly). Subsequent requests to the server will send that cookie in the header on machines which are not exhibiting the problem, but not on machines that are, so either the cookie is getting deleted or the "Set-Cookie" header is being ignored.
The way logging in works is as follows: a page on [URL] has an iframe. The source of that iframe is a page on [URL]. A variety of pages served from [URL] take the user through the login/register process. The final step of [URL] is to redirect to a page back on [URL], including the user's ID in the querystring. This page on [URL] typically stores the ID in session, and then runs some JS to redirect the top level document to a new page, thus taking the user out of the iframe. This is a process that has worked for several years, with several values of [URL]. The one thing that may be different here is that in this case, the JS is simply destroying the iframe and some containing div's.
Another difference I see between scenarios where the problem occurs and where it doesn't is in the Google Analytics cookies. There is a difference when [URL] does its redirect to [URL] inside the iframe. When the problem does not occur, the request for SaveTheID.aspx includes a variety of Google Analytics cookies (__utma, __utmz, etc). When the problem does occur, this request does not include all the GA cookies (it's missing __utma, __utmz and __utmb). Production is the only environment where [URL] runs under SSL, so I thought that may be related. But we temporarily set up our staging copy of [URL] to use SSL, and that had no effect.

I have a web application which uses a session variable to store the logged in userid. If no user is logged in, of course this variable will be empty and the contents displayed on my website are meant for guests. If there is a user logged in, the user specific controls/access/links will then be a displayed.
I am now having issues with my hosting where on shared application pool, the worker recycle is triggered every 90 minutes, this will clear sessions causing all my users to be logged out. I opted for a dedicated application pool, which got worse because I am only allocated 50MB memory limit and if this is reached, the worker recycle is triggered and I lose my sessions again. I have tried as much as possible optimization techniques, e.g. dispose where possible, close connections, disable viewstate for static controls etc but my memory per instance keeps building up from page to page without any signs of improvement. I don't use loops nor store huge objects like bitmaps etc but my sessions are now gone even faster than 90 minutes in shared application pool before.
I have considered using SQL Session State but there isn't a simple guide on using this with MySQL. I am getting desperate and considering using a public variable, a string as a replacement to store logged in user id instead of in a session variable. I am pretty sure this will solve my issue with sessions being recycled but are there any negative consequences of doing this? One problem I can think of is if the user closes the browser, the system will never know that the user is now logged out and this public variable should be nothing. In this scenario, will the GC eventually clear this abandoned public variable.

What would be the proper syntax in ASP.NEt 3.5 C# to assign a TextBox value to a temporary or session variable to be manipulated (added, subtracted, multiplied, divided) at different points in the application? I want to add a decimal number to this variable in almost every instance as well.

I have the dataset. in this i am having total 20 tables with huge amount of data..I want use this data over all the page..so where i can keep this data..
before i used viewstate but the viewstate data is render to page every postback ..so this time the page size is increasing(interanlly viewstate is rendered to page)..so performence wise it was very slow..
Now i change my logic insted of viewstate to i used Globel Dataset on Page Level.. now the performence wise better than viewstate..
i used Like shared dsControls as Dataset at top of the page..so every time i use this dataset..
my quesation is session is better or Globel variable is better way use in my situavation..

I added the following code to global.asax to load up several session variable when a session starts. I'm assuming that when a page goes to use the variable that I should be
1) checking at the page level that the value is valid not 0 when its not expected to be 0, not a zero-length string when its expected to have a length
2) have code at the page level that sets the values if the values have not been set as when the Session timeout, ideally putting the code in a class derived from Page and then deriving all of my pages from the new class so that the code does not have to be repeated in every page

The only issue is if you open a new tab with the same website the session variable does not reset. Is there a way to reset the session variable when you open a new tab or do you have to take the whole web browser down for it to clear the session variable.

I have been spending a better part of a week trying to track down why I am not able to clear all session variables in a web app (vs 2010, vb.net). What I have tracked it down to is that when I remove or abandon sessions that my html pages or codebehind access, it works, but for some reason in any of my class files where I use "Public Shared strConnection as String = HttpContext.Current.Session("strConnection").ToString" to access a session variable, it finds the old one and not the current one. I have to wait for it to time out, go in again, and it will find the new one.
I do not use Linq, and there is only one place in the whole web app that I place the connection string in a variable whcih is when a person logs in. It points them to the correct database. The sqlconnection is set for all of my listviews in Page_Init to make sure that they aren't using any session variable that they create on their own. Interestingly enough that if I use debug to go in each time, exit debug, enter debug again trying to access a different database, it works correct each time. I assume that debug is correctly killing the session variable for the classes for me.

I have some cascading dropdownlists using the ajax toolkit I have a set up datatables in an xsd file. Then use these in a webservice to populate all the fields ... this all works great but now i need to pass an additional paramter to the first dropdownlist ( a date) but don't know how to do this? The method is below...
[Code]....
The other code is:
[Code]....
The first change would be to the tableadapter to add a param to the code i.e
AuditWebDS.TeamsDataTable teams = teamsAdapter.GetTeams(calldate);
but how do i get the calldate param to the webservice method... i tried a session variable but it comes up with session is null ? Is there another better way?

Nested GridView Control returns "Object variable or With block variable not set" when outer GridView returns rows.
The Nested GridView Control works as long as the outer GridView returns rows, the following code works: [Code]....
Object variable or With block variable not set.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object variable or With block variable not set.
Source Error:
Line 118: If e.Row.RowType = DataControlRowType.DataRow Then
Line 119: Dim myStatus_ID As SqlDataSource = CType(e.Row.FindControl("sqlDeviceStatusAssign"), SqlDataSource)
Line 120: If Not e.Row.DataItem("Status_ID") Is Nothing Then
Line 121: myStatus_ID.SelectParameters(0).DefaultValue = e.Row.DataItem("Status_ID")
Line 122: End If
I have tried checking for IsDbNull and checking to see if a label exists in a given row. This code *If Not e.Row.DataItem("Status_ID") Is Nothing Then* appears to do nothing.Same with the following:
*Dim localLblItemReference As Label = CType(e.Row.FindControl("lblItemReference"), Label)
*If Not localLblItemReference Is Nothing Then
******************************************************************************************
To further clarify my question above, I am looking for a method to detect e.Row.DataItem("Status_ID") is nothing/null due to the outer GridView returning 0 results in a query.I have a (Outer) GridView Control with another GridView Control inside of a template field with it's associated SqlDataSource control.
In the "Protected Sub GridViewReport_RowCreated", I provide the Select Parameter for the associated SqlDataSource with the DataItem row value.When the (Outer) GridView Control does not return any rows, the "e.Row.DataItem("Status_ID")" throws a:
Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object variable or With block variable not set.

In the VS2005 environment, when I test my session to make sure the page redirects to the main page (itself) if the session is null, it works. There is no error.
The function I use for this is:
[code]....
However, when it is in the production environment in IIS 6.0, when the session has timed out, and I then do a postback by doing some slider control, I see the page reload but immediately thereafter, it throws a Server Error exception of : Object reference not set to an instance of object.
Looking at the stack trace, the event occured:
AJAXEnabledWebApplication1._Default.Slider1_TextChanged(Object sender, EventArgs e)
however, why is it that the Slider1_TextChanged event fired even even after during page_load, the page was told to do a response.direct ?? shouldn't the entire page have gone through a full-page refresh life cycle ? why did it continue on to attempt to raise the Slider1_TextChanged event?

I am confused about how to reference objects in session, how to update, and copy.
if I create
MyObject obj = new Object ();
then
Session["object"] = obj;
MyObject temp = (MyObject)Session["object"];
If i change something on temp, will the object in session be updated? do i need to follow changes with Session["object"] = temp?
