Using 3rd Party Dll In Enterprise Web Based Application?
May 23, 2010
I found a great control with example here for mvc It fulfills all my requirement but the problem is that it uses a js tree dll. Should I go on and used that example in my application? Do you people refrain from using 3rd party free dll in applications? How will I tell that it will not expire or not cause problem later on Forgive me if this is inappropriate question but thx in advance for any appropiate reply on this topic. just trying to get the point of view of you people on this

I'm designing an enterprise web application interface based on an old system, and i planned to migrate the old frames layout to master page, but i noticed that if i use masterpages, the application users will be able to see the querystring or route path, and it could be a security issue. What is the best way to avoid this? Using frames? Masterpages with iframes as content? Masterpages with all PartialViews loaded by jquery?

Does MS have a sample enterprise application that demonstrates the use of different Enterprise library blocks (Logging, Dataaccess, Exception, Validation etc)? I am looking for something that uses best practices in using and integrating all these blocks in a single application.

We have a huge ASP.NET web application which needs to be deployed to LIVE with zero or nearly zero downtime. Let me point out that I've read the following question/answers but unfortunately it doesn't solve our problems as our architecture is a little bit more complicated.
Let's say that currently we have two IIS servers responding to requests and both are connected to the same MSSQL server. The solution seems like a piece of cake but it isn't because of the major schema changes we have to apply from time to time. Because of it's huge size, a simple database backup takes around 8 minutes which has become unacceptable, but it is a must before every new deploy for security reasons.
Currently the best idea we came up is buying another SQL server which would be set up as a replica of the original DB. From the load balancer we would route all new traffic to one of the two IIS webservers. When the second webserver is free of running sessions then we can make deploy the new code. Now comes the hard part. At this point we would go offline with the website, take down the replication between the two SQL servers so we directly have a snapshot of the database in a hopefully consistent state (saves us 7.5 of the 8 minutes). Finally we would update the database schema on the main SQL server, and route all traffic via the updated webserver while we are upgrading the second webserver to the new version.
also share your thoughts regarding this solution. Can we somehow manage to eliminate the need for going offline with the website? How do bluechip companies with mammuth web applications do deployment?
Edit 1 (2010.01.12):
Another requirement is to eliminate manual intervention, so in fact we are looking for a way which can be applied in an automated way.
Let me just remind you the requirement list:
1. Backup of database
2a. Deploy of website
2b. Update of database schema
3. Change to updated website
4 (optional): easy way of reverting to the old website if something goes very wrong.

the situation is quite complex ( and my english very basic) but let's try to explain:
i'm developing a Asp.net web service calling a method from an external dll. This external dll calls some method from other .net dlls. So we have:
Asp.net WS ----> External.dll ----> other.NEt.Dll(---> other .netdll)
You have to know that the external dll uses a path ( given by an initialize method) to resolve its internal reference. In conclusion i have a web application with an added reference to my External.dll and a fully trusted path ( c:EXTERNAL ) full of all the .net dlls needed by external.dll. Looking around i've found this code to add to the application_START:
Dim path As String = String.Concat(System.Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("PATH"), ";", "c:EXTERNAL)
System.Environment.SetEnvironmentVariable("PATH", path, EnvironmentVariableTarget.Machine)
this add my c:EXTERNAL to global environment PATH. With this configuration running from the Visual Studio development server i get no error and it all works correctly. When i publish the application on my local IIS server it gives various errors: At first the result is something like:
Failure reading <Myobject> control of <(static)> type
Unable to create <myobject> object (<C:(WRONGPATH)
eeded.net.dll> assembly)
To resolve this i've tried to add the needed .net dlls to the /bin of my application in wwwroot but the result is something like:
Failure reading <MyType> control of <Myobject> type
Error returned by .NET Framework:
System.ArgumentException: Un oggetto di tipo 'ComNet.BaseControl.LoginDisplayLayout' non può essere convertito nel tipo 'ComNet.BaseControl.LoginDisplayLayout'.
in System.RuntimeType.CheckValue(Object value, Binder binder, CultureInfo culture, BindingFlags invokeAttr)

in CDotNetType.bSetProperty(CDotNetType* , Object gcrObj, SByte* pszNom, CSLevel* pclPile, Int32 nDimension, Int32* pnTabDimension, STOperationDotNet* pstOperation)
this time it looks like it's loading the same dll but from different location causing conflicts. Now that's all. Its hard for me to explain this dll-hell but basically i would like to replicate whats happening when the application works well in the visual studio development server. I've also read that IIS does not resolve Added PATH without rebooting so i tried to add c:external manually to the PATH and reboot but same errors appears.

I am using Asp.net 3.5. In my application I am handling errors at application level in Global.asax. I am using 3rd party control FpSpread in my application. In all the pages where I've that control, it's throwing "File does not exist" error when first time postback occurs in IE (on every postback in FF). From the log I got following Details:
04/01/2010 11:32:18 : The error description is as follows : [URL]
Type- System.Web.HttpException
Message- File does not exist.
Stack Trace- at System.Web.StaticFileHandler.GetFileInfo(String virtualPathWithPathInfo, String physicalPath, HttpResponse response)

It is trying to refer wrong URL because my css is in App_Themes/Blue directory and my page is in /Forms/Company directory. Has anyone encountered similar issue before?? Is this the issue related to theme?? I am not trying to load any images programmatically.

I am starting to design my own CMS , and i want it to be modular to add more functionality later by me or by any other developer I put my eyes on joomla CMS (very popular ,robust and extensible) I want to make a CMS with asp.net to be just skeleton and all functions are done through components
Functions like :-
User management
Content Management ,editing and display etc.
My main idea is to let the skeleton to know from the query URL the required component and pass all other parameters to it and the component do the rest (parse parameters display results etc.)
the problem is how to achieve this how to call the component and and how to let it render its UI and pass it to the skeleton to put it in the appropriate place in the main site template

The Report Designer should be an existing app. I don't want to create a Report Designer from scratch. More details: My app is an ASP.NET MVC application. But I can use Java based solutions too, using IKVM.

I am using Enterprise library for my data access. when I am running the application, at the CreateDatabase() statement I am getting this exception:
Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder2.BuildFailedException was unhandled by user code Message="The current build operation (build key Build Key[Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data.Database, null]) failed: The value can not be null or an empty string. (Strategy type Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common.Configuration.ObjectBuilder.ConfiguredObjectStrategy,index 2)" Source="Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder2"
Now, I googled a bit and I found that I have to place
<dataConfiguration defaultDatabase="LocalSqlServer"/>
but I don't know where. Is it the right solution? Also, at the time of installing enterprise library I didn't see any connection string statement? So, I wonder how it will take the connection string from web.config file. In the connection string section of my web.config file I have:
<remove name="LocalSqlServer"/>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=MSTR;Initial Catalog=USERDb;Integrated Security=true;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
