Web Development - Use Caching To Get A High Performanc Like In PHP?

Nov 20, 2010

My question is regarding ASP.NET performance. Does it make things more complex like in PHP when I need to make the site performs better? Do I need to use use caching as well?

And is it easier to chach a website in ASP.NET?

Caching In Development Server?

Jan 15, 2010

Details:

I am using visual studio 2005 on windows xp sp3. The website is stored on file system. I used subversion to checkout the code from the server.

Here is the issue:

When I run the application for the first time everything is fine. But when I makes changes in the application then I should just be able to see those changes by reloading the page in browser. But it's not happening. I have to stop the development server and re-run the application which will start a new instance of development server and now I can see the changes. This takes like 3-4 minutes and it's a lot of waste of time which I can't afford.

For my fellow developer who is here for a long time everything is just working fine. He can just modify the page and reload the page in browser to see the changes.

Reading some forums on web, I tried to clear the cache of my browser (IE, Firefox) and it's not working. So, it's not a browser's cache issue. It's related to cache in development server.

Web Development - Configure Caching For Anonymous Only?

Feb 25, 2010

I'm looking for a way to configure caching only for anonymous users only. The reason I'm looking to do this is when users are logged in and they create content they don't immediately see the content. In our old system (linux/php/mysql) we had it configured to cache only the anonymous users and this wasn't an issue.

Right now we have caching setup in the web.config like this

[code]....

I know that I can add a varyByCustom="userName" like this post is talking about. But this doesn't solve my problem. It still caches the users login and the same problem exists.

Is It Wise To Mix MVC Development And Web Form Development In The Same Group Of Products?

Oct 20, 2010

We have a largely asp.net web form team (With some Oracle developers thrown in).

Question 1:

Is it a good idea to start using asp.net MVC which will mean redevelopment of a number of standard controls for not much benefit.

Question 2:

Is it a good idea to hire developers where there most recent skills are with asp.net MVC?

I doubt there is any benefit adopting MVC now, given the 100+ applications in this suite of products, and the maintenance/rework this will cause. Given this, is there any particular reason to hire MVC developers, as they won't be hitting the ground running, which is what I need now.

W3wp.exe Has High Cpu Usage On Every Request?

Oct 26, 2010

I'm running a Windows 2008 server (a VPS with 1GB of RAM), with SQL Server Express and IIS 7 installed. On it I'm hosting a NopCommerce 1.7 website, with a database of around 26 000 products.

Right now I'm the only user of the website (it's in development) and I'm getting rather bad performance from it. To be more specific every time I make a request, the worker process goes to 90-100% CPU usage for a few seconds. Is it me or this is a lot for a 1 user NopCommerce website?

PS: the worker process uses between 100MB-400MB of memory (private working set), and SQL Server with this database, around 160MB.

AJAX :: ToolkitScriptManager CombineScript Causes High CPU?

May 19, 2010

We have a website which uses a lot of AJAX, specifically update panels, modal popup extenders and a few other extenders. Let me give you a really brief overview of the application structure. We have a master page which hosts the ToolkitScriptManager object and then all the other pages in the site are children of this master page. We have specified the CombineScripts property to True and we have also specified the CombineScriptsHandlerUrl property to point to the handler that comes with the sample AJAX website. We have set the enableCompression and enableCaching properties to True in the web.config file.

We are trying to determine application performance on this site and we have found out that on each page request, the CPU utilization goes up to a 50% which is really very strange (as this is only for 1 user). When we change the CombinScripts property to false, the CPU utilization comes down to 3-4% for each request. The problem which we cannot understand is why is the server not able to cache the combined scripts and why does it try to combine the scripts on each request which is taking the utilization to a very high percentage. I have read a lot on the internet that if we use a handler for combining scripts, it will cache the combine scripts on the server and it will be served from the cache but clearly in our case it does not seem to be working.

We have also tried to use ScriptManager instead and include all the script references (using the ScriptReferenceProfiler) we could in the CompositeScript tag but that does the same thing to CPU as the CombineScripts.

C# - SQL Profiles Showing High Activity?

Jan 16, 2011

I am running my application locally -- ie. No external traffic and very low number of queries, fully under my control. I see tons of 'Audit Login' and 'Audit Logout' events. What are these and where are they actually stored (ie. Where is this audit log)? Are these a hint of a problem with connections, because I have only a simple connection string within my app and thought that connections would remain active throughout the operation of my app (ie. a single login at launch, and then a single logout when terminating).

As far as I am aware the website does not use cookies.Any idea what the problem could be? Can this be resolved to enable users to log in regardless of their privacy settings?

WCF / ASMX :: High CPU Usage Of Process W3wp.exe?

When the batch tasks started, CPU usage came from 1% to 99%, w3wp.exe took 70%, and sqlserver.exe took 29%. About five minutes later the batch process tasks completed, but CPU usage still kept the level 60%, w3wp.exe took 40%, and sqlserver.exe took 20%, and it's never down. Page / Visit Is High Since It Is Content Site

Apr 4, 2011

I have an asp.net web site with 10-25k visitors a day (peaks of over 60k before holidays). Pages/visit is also high, since it's a content site. I have a few specific pages which generate about 60% of the traffic. These pages are a bit complex and are DB heavy (sql server 2008 r2 backend). I was wondering if it's worth "caching" a static version of these pages (I hear this is possible) and only re-render them when something changes (about once in 48hs). Does this sound like a good idea? Where would be the best place to implement this? (asp.net, iis, db) Update: Looks like a good option for me is outputcache with SqlDependency. I see a reference to some kind of SQL server notification for invalidating the cache, but I only see talk of SQL server 2005. Has this option been deprecated by Microsoft? Any new way to handle this?

Amount Of Data Transfered With A Repeater Really High?

Sep 3, 2010

I was busy implementing a repeater in an ASP.NET 4.0 to display data that I got from the database, I didn't start with building in paging so at the start allot of data was transfered. I filled a datatable and bound it as the datasource of my repeater.I noticed the following, while the page was busy loading 4000 records(way to much ofc) 26mb was transfered. This is allot, so I got curious and implementer displaying the same data/html with a for each loop (ofc this is not a good solution load time wise). When the page was loading 10.5 mb was transfered this time. How come that when using a repeater 26 mb (24 with viewstate disabled) is transfered, and when creating the HTML with a loop 10 mb? Is there anyway to optimize the repeater? I implemented just the basic(creating itemtemplate, filling datatable from database and binding it to the repeater)
