I am using Linq-To-Sql to add people to a one-to-one table. Sometimes I get a error "Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint" when the person is already added. Can anyone give me instruction on how to handel the exception.

I'm using Dynamic Data and LINQ to SQL for some admin pages on a .NET 3.5 web app. All my admin tables have a CreatedBy, CreatedDate, UpdatedBy, and UpdatedDate.I'm looking for a way to inject the setting of these properties before the objects are inserted and updated.
I've seen an object_inserting hook if you have a linq to sql datasource in the web form, but I'm using dynamic data...is there an easy way to generically set that? And I've also looked at modifying each of the partial classes for my admin objects, but the closest hook I see is to implement the OnValidate method with the Insert action.

I am using 1 textbox with a Ajax Calendar extender to allow my user's to select a date graphically (exp: 12/15/2009). I have another textbox for the hour and minutes in military time(exp: 15:30). I think i have the code to grab the data from the 2 textbox's and combine them to be inserted into the field (exp: 12/15/2009 15:30). Here is my insert code for the Field:

However unless I make all the fields Nullable the insert fails, on top of that none of the other field that I have selected on the Detailsview Insert or Edit are inserted into there fields. Half of my fields have to be non-null values. So how do I fix this?
I can supply additional vb code and the aspx code if needed.

This problem is trivial to duplicate. Do any query on a table which contains a timestamp / rowversion column. Set a breakpoint and examine the resulting query in the Linq to SQL visualizer. Click on Execute which displays the results in a DataGridView. For each row you get "System Argument Exception: Parameter is not valid" when it tries to display the timestamp / rowversion in the grid. What is most annoying is that there is no way to get out of the visualizer without going to Task Manager and killing the Visual Studio process, devenv.exe.
This is definitely a bug. How can you presume to be able to display a database query when you can't display an essential datatype like timestamp / rowversion? Is there any way around this ? I would like to add that in general the CLR is woefully inadequate in the way it handles timestamp / rowversion fields. It would be nice if they could be defined, copied, compared, displayed and serialized in some standardized automatic way.

I have a typical gridview/formview master control setup. When I try to update or insert I don't get any errors but it also doesn't work. When I try to insert data all I get are null values and when I update, none of the values are updated. The formview looks like its working, but just doesn't. The primary key is an identity and it auto-increments by one.

I have a number of tables that together make up a "Test" that somebody can take. There are multiple types (scripts) of Test a person can take. I'm working on an Edit function that will allow somebody to edit the Test Questions. I want these edited questions to show up on all new Tests of that type, but still show the old questions when viewing past test scores.
To do this each "Test" has a TestId auto-increment identity (along with its name). When a test is edited I want to make a copy of the test with a new TestId and present the questions for editing.
So what is the best way to make the copy and insert it into my table using LINQ to SQL? This:

Is the only way to do this to go through every column in the TestScript and copy it manually, then insert it, and the database will give it a new Id?

View 3 RepliesLet's say I have a dataset in an ASP.NET website (.NET 3.5) with 5 tables, each has roughly 30,000 rows and an average of 12 columns. I want to insert all of the data from the dataset into 5 very-similar-but-not-quite-identical tables in SQL Server 2008. I also want to use LINQ (personal preference - trying to learn something new).
Is it as simple as iterating through the dataset and, for each row, creating a new instance of the associated class, initializing its data with the dataset's row, adding it to the data model, and then doing one giant SubmitChanges at the end?
Are there better ways of doing this with LINQ? Or is this the de-facto standard?
