Architecture :: Webserver Splitting Up Services Or Making A Single Big One?

Apr 1, 2010

I'm planning to make an ASP.NET webserver that provides all kinds of functions, like an API. There will be quite alot functions that can easily be grouped (datasystem, userAccount, fileSystem, and so on). I can make multiple services (asmx files) into a single webserver, and let the clients connect to whatever service(s) they need. However, I'm not sure if it's a wise thing to do... Pack everything into 1 big service(1 asmx file), or split up into many smaller services? How about:

- performance/memory on the server (a client that connets with 1 or 6 services)

- Maximum connections (we will use a Windows XP Server edition computer)

There will be about ~30 computers using it. In a worst case scenario, they each computer could make use of 6 services at the same time, if I decide to split it up. A single client could make use of the fileSystem, account, dataSystem and several other things at the same time.

I have this scenario. I have an application running in a webserver (in DMZ). End users upload documents to the webserver. right now all the documents get stored in the webserver itself. I would like to store all the docs in the database server.

What is the best way to store the documents, move it from webserver to db server after they uplocaded or directly upload to the db server ?.

And, if I have to upload directly to the db server could someone help me how to mangae the connection to the db server and credentials..?

GridView Making A Single Edit Item Template Take The Entire Row?

Jan 6, 2010

I've got this gridview. The gridview uses TemplateFields as the number of fields in the database's table. What I do next is use an ItemTemplate to present the correct column info.

Now, problems rise when the user click's Edit. Since I can only use EditItemTemplate to edit I am resulted with a control in each column. What I really want is to have a single row with no columns so I can easily style the edit mode (having a table with a different layout for example).

Is this possible?

I'm in the middle of writing the class that will use these web services but I'm not sure how to do what i'm trying to do.What I need is a class that does the work of consuming the web serivce, and I want to pass to it either the test or prod serice and and it be transparent insde of the class.

So..testSerive and prodSerice are idential, how can i have them inherit from something so that i can pass that something to my consumer class?

Architecture :: Entities In Client Application Using WCF Web Services?

Jun 16, 2010

Can some one inform me whether I need to replicate the same set of entities in the client which are similar to that of the ones in the server? I have planned to start a proj with service functions as wcf services and in turn they are getting referred in silverlight client application.

Incase if i need to consider casting to or back from the return value lists of service methods in the server, should i be creating entity class in the client application as well? Or is there a work around? Something like exposing the entities from the server just as the services functions?

Architecture Switch From Page And JSON ASMX Web Services To MVC

Feb 6, 2010

there's an .aspx page that does absolutely nothing in the codebehind, but contains the markup for the page in the Design View. Then we have an .asmx web service that receives requests with JSON content-type. These are called by the JavaScript in the page. This web service returns .NET objects serialized to JSON in response to these JavaScript Ajax HTTP POSTs. I'd like to switch to MVC but am not sure to how switch this architecture. Basically what we're doing is two things:

1) Replying to GET /MyPage.aspx with HTML markup that represents the page
2) Replying to POST /MyPage.aspx/WebMethodName requests with .NET objects serialized to JSON.

It seems like MVC would be a good way to eliminate the need for a Page object (again, the codebehind isn't used--only the HTML markup in the .aspx file is) and an .asmx web service. No? What do I need to start changing to accomplish this switch? Is it straight-forward? Painful? Someone at work already has an MVC page running in the same directory as my Web Forms .aspx and .asmx web service, but I don't see anything in the directory about Routes, so I'm confused. He's got a Views, ViewModels, and Controllers subdirectories.

Architecture :: Too Many Connections On Single Page?

May 21, 2010

My ISP manager complains that my pages open too many connections and it should be dealt with immidiatly.Now, i'm not sure what exactly he means.Most of my pages look something a like : Two drop-down-lists, one gridview, and few other controllers.now, MOST OF THESE CONTROLLERS POST BACK AND FETCH INFO FROM THE DATABASE.each of the eventhandler create a new connection instance, open a connection, fetch info, and than closes the onnection.Thing is that many users visit the site at (probably) the same time, so i was wondering how could I decrease the number of connections?Perhaps making sure that the connections do close immidiatly post command execution?

Architecture :: Single Sign On Web And Windows Apps?

Sep 18, 2010

We, at our company, are developing a file sharing application which will allow users to upload/download files. This application will be part of the suite of other applications. We will be adding a desktop client (windows app) which is an upload/download manager which will assist users to queue in multiple large files for upload/download. There are a couple of questions related to design for these applications:

1. We would like to implement Single Sign-On for all these applications (including desktop client). We would like users to login to web and once they do that, they can browse through applications without logging in again. We will be implementing a authetication service using WCF. The requirement is that we do not want to add authentication functionality to desktop client. So users will need to login to our web application. We can write cookie to user's machines and will work for web applications. Can the desktop client use the same cookie to autheticate itself? Or there are other ways we can achieve it? 2. We also do not want that when desktop client is uploading/downloading multiple files that its session is expired and the user need to re-authenticate through web. How can we achieve it? How does other Upload/Download Managers (like MS File Trasnfer Manager) work?

Splitting A C# List<T> Into Two?

Aug 18, 2010

I'm using C# and ASP.NET 3.5. Basically I'm retrieving a column of data from a dataset and putting this into a list like so:

List<String> dates = new List<String>();
foreach (DataRow rowMonth in myDS.Tables[0].Rows)
{
string ListedMonthYear = (string)rowMonth[0];
dates.Add(ListedMonthYear);
}

The returned values are:

Apr-10
Mar-10
Feb-10
Jan-10
Dec-09
Nov-09
Oct-09

I'm interested in splitting these values into two lists with the idea of performing operations on them in the future.

Apr | 2010
Mar | 2010
Feb | 2010
Jan | 2010
Dec | 2009
Nov | 2009
Oct | 2009

What is the best way to do so?

EDIT: rowMonth is just the datarow that includes all date related values - the month-year, the month beginning, month ending, month active or inactive. Basically I'm just trying to extract that first column month-year to do operations on and ignore the rest.
