Auto Generating Code-behind Files From .aspx Files?

Nov 9, 2010

I have a designer working on several pages in Dreamweaver. The designer is creating .aspx files with the Page directive at the top. These are getting shipped to me and I'm adding them to the Visual Studio ASP.NET WebForms Web Application Project. The problem is that there's no code-behind file by default, and I'm trying to find a shortcut to have them autogenerated as if I've added a fresh page from Visual Studio.

Make Visual Studio Treat .htm Files Like .aspx Files?

Apr 15, 2010

I've inherited a bunch of code that has server script inside of .htm files.

On IIS, a handler mapping pumps.Htm pages though the engine.

Unfortunately, visual studio doesn't notice that they should be treated as code.

Is there any way to make VS treat .Htm files as code/aspx files?

Response.Status = "301 Moved Permanently"
Response.AddHeader("Location", "")

Debugging VB Code In Aspx Files?

Feb 15, 2011

I am converting an old asp project to a new .NET project. Now, all vb code are inside aspx files, and we are on the process of moving all vb script from aspx files to .vb files. My problem is, I can't debug the vb script inside most of the aspx files. All my friends don't have this problem. I think the problem is with vb text editor.

I am using Visual Studio 2008.

Is there anyway, I can make visual studio understand that aspx files have vb script inside them.

can't debug the code

C# - Some Aspx Controls Are Not Recognized In The Code-behind Files

Jul 19, 2010

I noticed that some aspx controls were not being recognized by intellisense, and when I tried to compile, I got errors stating that the controls basically didn't exist.

After a lot of tinkering, I realized that the .aspx.designer.cs file was missing for several .aspx files.

What is the best way to re-create the files?

VS 2010 - Two Different ASPX Files But Same Code-behind File?

May 21, 2012

I have code that needs to run in two deployments. Let's call them deployment H and deployment W.

The code is already running in deployment H, and there's an aspx page and an aspx.cs code-behind file. The code is compiled for framework 2.0 which is the lowest common denominator of the two deployments. Deployment H has its own logos and styling which are coded in its aspx file.

Deployment W now wants to use this same page, but it wants its own logos and styling. There are also additional fields on the page that deployment H doesn't need.

I think it's easier to maintain one code base which is why I want the same code-behind file, but I am having trouble figuring out how to set this up in Visual Studio. Orginally, I was going to have two projects, one for W and one for H, but I'd have to make the same changes to both files when some of the common areas changes.

C# - Accessing Source Code Generated From ASPX/ASCX Files?

Mar 3, 2010

You've probably noticed that when you debug an error which comes from an ASPX or ASCX file (literally, not from a corresponding code-behind file), ASP.NET displays an error page showing you the source file and the line on which the error occurs. The source file being displayed is automatically generated from parsing the page/control. The question is: how can I see this source file without purposely causing an exception?

I'd love to hear that there is some programmatic way (the complexity doesn't matter) to generate source files (preferrably, .cs) from a series of ASPX/ASCX files.

Example. Consider the following ASPX page (the code-behind file may even be absent):

<%@ Page Language="C#"%>
<%@ Register Assembly="AspxGen" Namespace="AspxGen" TagPrefix="ag" %>
<head><title>Some Title</title></head>

d:DevAspxGenAspxGenDefault.aspx(9,80): error CS0103: The name 'ThereIsNoSuchProperty' does not exist in the current context

This means, theoretically I can open the .CS files passed to the compiler (namely, App_Web_sqj3krv3.0.cs and App_Web_sqj3krv3.1.cs) and see what ASP.NET has generated from my ASPX markup. Trying to rephrase the previous question: how can I obtain this file from an arbitrary ASPX file (assuming that the file is correct and hence no info will be given on where to search)?

C# - Basic Refactoring Features Unavailable When Editing Code In An Aspx/ascx Files

Mar 13, 2010

I was just editing some C# code between <% %> tags in an .ascx file, and I noticed that the Refactor contextual menu is unavailable. And even if I manually add items from this menu to a custom toolbar, they are disabled when viewing aspx/ascx files.

I usually only have small snippets of C# code in my aspx/ascx files, but it would still be nice to be able to perform refactoring operations on any code that exists between <% %> tags. I feel like I'm going back to the dark ages when I have to use find/replace to change the name of a variable.

Is there a way to enable Visual Studio's refactoring features while viewing aspx/ascx files in Visual Studio?

Are there any Visual Studio plug-ins (preferably free) that offer this kind of functionality?

Performance Difference Of Code In Aspx And Cs Files For Showing And Hiding Control Dynamically

Feb 18, 2011

I was thinking about the performance when I use code to hide some control in aspx page using delimiters or in cs file. For e.g. If I have a panel and I want it to get shown following some condition, so I can achieve this by two ways

1: Using code in aspx file, something like this

<% if(isAllowed) { %>
<asp:Panel ...></asp:Panel>
<% } %>

2: In the code file, something like this

<asp:Panel ID="pnlMyPanel" Visible="false"></asp:Panel>

And in cs file

In my view, first way should be good as it will not at all create any Panel in the page. Am I correct here?

C# - Generating Html Files In A Console Application?

Sep 13, 2010

I need to get data from a database and I need to spit out this data in html formatk using my command line app. For this I am planning to use some sort of template-engine. I was wondering if there is anything in .NET that can do this for me?

The best option would be if I could reuse the mvc template engine (razor) in my app, this way I should not need to reinvent the wheel.

Generating Entity Class Files From Table Schema?

Jul 1, 2010

I am using LINQ to SQL with C#. Is there a method through which we can generate entity class files from the table schema? By dragging tables onto the graphical designer classes are generated but they are not the real class files(i mean actual files with the extension cs).

I am aware of that we can code the class files first and then create the schema manually or programmatically, but i wanted to know if the reverse is possible, may be using some third-party tools. I feel it will be very convenient to use LINQ that way.

Which Files Are Auto-generated?

I know that Visual Studio auto-generates a lot of code when you develop a web application. How do I know which code is auto-generated? I do a lot of code editing and tweaking by hand (Im not a WYSIWYG guy), and I want to make sure I'm not editing something thats going to get over-written later by the auto-generator!

MVC :: Can't Modify Auto-generated Files With Dataannotations

Feb 21, 2011

Split off from Start new questions in a new thread.

Hey thanks a lot!!!

The following link worked fine

However, I am Having one other problem. There are four solutions in my project. All my controllers and Views are declared in the Presentation solution. There are auto-generated class files in the solution named DomainModel. So, my views inherits these auto-generated files from the DomainModel solution. The problem is that I can't modify these auto-generated files by using Data Annotations in there. Hence, cannot accomplish my validation. I tried by creating partial classes but no result. By creating a class file in my Presentation solution and then binding it with the view the validation works fine. But my views are binded with the class files (auto-generated) from the DomainModel.

Can you/anyone help me work it out so, that validation works with those classes without modifying it.

Prevent Themes From Auto-adding CSS Files?

Feb 5, 2011

Having to deal with URL rewriting, I decided to programmatically add CSS references rather than relying on the automatic behavior of ASP.NET to add all CSS files within a theme automatically to the <head> of an ASPX page.I suceeded in adding the CSS file programmatically by using

<link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" runat="server" id="CssFile" />

and setting the actual URL it in code behind. My question is:Is there a way to prevent the ASP.NET "engine" from automatically adding all CSS files into the <head> of my ASPX/master page?(Of course, I still could go with my own folders and completely drop the App_Themes concept)

Can Server .html Files Using Razor As If They Were .cshtml Files Without Changing The Extension Of All My Pages

Feb 24, 2011

I manage a large site which has previously been converted from static html site to For several reasons (mainly SEO) we decided not to rename all the files to .aspx back when we originally converted the site. This was very easy to do by simply adding the buildProvider and httpHandler to the web.config.

<add extension=".html" type="System.Web.Compilation.PageBuildProvider"/>
<add path="*.html" verb="*" type="System.Web.UI.PageHandlerFactory"/>

Now I am upgrading the site to use WebPages with Razor cshtml files. I can rename all the files if necessary, and use url rewriting to make the urls stay the same, however it would be much easier if I could just configure the web.config to tell it to parse .html files as if they were .cshtml. I have searched around quite a bit, and could not find anything equivalent to the PageHandlerFactory for razor pages. It appears as though it is just an internal mechanism in the .net 4.0 ISAPI handler.

The site is currently running on Windows 2003 server and IIS 6. We will be upgrading to 2008/IIS 7.5 in the near future, but I'd prefer not to wait for that. Is there any way to get the .html files to be parsed by razor as if they were .cshtml files?
