Converting A Client Application To A Server Application?
May 14, 2010
I have written a program that interprets bar charts on the web and converts them into textual summaries. It is blind and visually impaired get more information during their web surfing. Anyways, right now all of the processing is handled on the user's machine and it is a very resource intensive program. So, I wanted to make it so the main computation was done by a server so that the user could simply click on a graph and get the summary instead of waiting while the computation was being done. Does anyone have a clue how to tackle this problem? If you need more information let me know.

Is it possible to convert a windows form application into a web application?
If it is not possible, how can I add the OpenFileDialog in a web application form?
I cannot see it in the toolbox if i choose new web application. On the other hand, I can see it if I choose windows form application.

I'm developing an three layer ASP.NET application with C# and Visual Studio 2008 SP1. I'm using WebForms.
I'm wondering to convert that application to a Silverlight application. Maybe I can reuse a lot of code of ASP.NET layer.

I want to ask the following:
Does anyone have an example of some code which executes an SSIS package from a ASP.NET web app using VB.NET?
I have built a web application and want to be able to execute the SSIS package when the user clicks a button on the web page.
So far I have:
[code]....
I need to know how to set this up so it runs remotely. I have searched MSDN (useless), [URL] and sqlservercentral.

I had created ASP.Net Web Application named 'Traning Management System' (in English) for my company. Now my boss wants me to translate that application to Arabic language. He wants everything to be in arabic. I don't know how to do it. I searched in google and came to know about localization and globalization. I could not understand the topics. My application contains 1 master page, 5 .aspx pages. The pages mostly contains labels, textboxes, gridview, buttons and other controls. The project also contains reports.

I'm experiencing a to me mysterious error when sending e-mails through a SMTP-server from an ASP.NET web application. I get the famous error "unable to relay for xxx@yyy.zzz". What's mysterious to me is that when I cut and paste the exact same code that sends the e-mail into an usual .NET Windows Forms application, send the e-mail with this application, it all works just fine. This made me think that perhaps the problem is that the ASP.NET application runs as NETWORK SERVICE while the Windows Forms application runs on a domain user account, but it turns out that I have another ASP.NET application sending e-mail through the same SMTP-server running under NETWORK SERVER at the same IIS, and this application does not experience this problem.
I've further tried to send e-mails through the SMTP-server manually by telnet the smtp-server on port 25 and running the SMTP-protocol manually, and it all works fine. The SMTP-server is not configured with any kind of authentication or SSL.
Another mysterious fact is that the ASP.NET application can send e-mails from an adress within the same domain to an e-mail adress within the same domain, but not to any adress outside of the domain. But the Windows Forms application, that uses the exact same code, can send e-mails from any adress to any adress both within AND outside of the domain.
So to summarize:
The ASP.NET application can send
e-mails from addresses within the
domain to adresses within the domain,
but not to addresses outside of the
domain.
A Windows Forms application running
the same code on the same computer
can send e-mails from ANY address to
ANY address.
Another ASP.NET application on the
same IIS running under the same
account (NETWORK SERVICE) can send
e-mails using the same SMTP-server
from ANY adress to ANY adress.
There is no authentication configured
on the SMTP-Server.
Both the ASP.NET application and the
Windows Forms application utilizes
the System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient class
to send a
System.Net.Mail.MailMessage.
The code that sends the e-mail massage is:
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
MailMessage mesasge = new MailMessage(txtFrom.Text, txtTo.Text, "Test mail", txtBody.Text);
SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient();
if (!(string.IsNullOrEmpty(txtUserName.Text))) //Is false since txtUserName.Text is empty
client.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(txtUserName.Text, txtPassword.Text);
client.EnableSsl = false;
client.Host = txtServer.Text;
client.Port = 25;
try
{
client.Send(mesasge);
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
txtResponse.Text = ex.Message;
}
}
As far as I can understand, this should be a matter of configuration rather than coding issues.

Question: I created an ASP.NET web application. Now it originally was meant for deployment on a webserver.
That is working, so, so far so good. My question now is: Is it possible to deploy it as a desktop-application, too? That is to say the installer installs some kind of server, plus the web application, configures the server to run this application on a localhost URL, and then creates a link in the start menu/desktop, where it opens that url (website, the application) on localhost in a web browser?
I think it should be possible, though the server wouldn't be IIS, because this is a windows component which can't be separately installed. Is there anything like this already out there? The nonplusultra would be that it only starts the server when you click on the shortcut.

I got this error in a project I did a while back. I think this was a web site project that i converted to a web app project. This was a while ago. This is an app I'm trying to run on my local machine. I'm not using IIS.
Does anyone know what this means?
Error 2
It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

I have many (>600) EPS files(300 KB - 1 MB) in database. In my ASP.NET application (using ASP.NET 4.0) I need to retrieve them one by one and call a web service which would convert the content to the JPEG file and update the database (JPEGContent column with the JPEG content). However, retrieving the content for 600 of them itself takes too long from the SQL management studio itself (takes 5 minutes for 10 EPS contents).
So I have two issues:-
1) How to get the EPS content ( unfortunately, selecting certain number of content is not an option :-( ):-
Approach 1:-
foreach(var DataRow in DataTable.Rows)
{
// get the Id and byte[] of EPS
// Call the web method to convert EPS content to JPEG
}
or
foreach(var DataRow in DataTable.Rows)
{
// get only the Id of EPS
// Hit database to get the content of EPS
// Call the web method to convert EPS content to JPEG
}
or
Any other approach?
2) Converting EPS to JPEG using a web method for >600 contents. Ofcourse, each call would be a long running operation. Would task parellel library (TPL) be a better way to achieve this?
Also, is doing the entire thing in a SQL CLR function a good idea?
EDIT :- Unfortunately, I have to do this in the ASP.NET application itself and doing that in a separate process like Windows service is not an option.

I have an application that runs perfectly fine locally using the VS 2010 application server, however, when I deploy to our web app machine startup just spins and spins and never loads. We have other apps on this same machine that load just fine (this is a debug deployment of same app in product). I have been spinning my wheels on this for days and I am at a loss as the problem could be. Here is what I did
1) Create a new directory (same level as other apps)
2) Copied over our existing test ([URL]) and it works fine
3) Build and publish new debug app ([URL]) and it just spins trying to load first form.
I know the diretory is "working" as the 'test' application I put there works fine.

i've converted a asp.net website to a web-application.
in the website i have some custom classes (folder App_Code) which where encapsulated in a namespace.
when i try to build the web-application i get the compiler error type or namespace not found for my own classes.
e.g.

After following the instructions in Scott Guthrie's blog for converting a web site to a web application project, I am getting many, many errors. Most are either 'Name <control> is not declared.' or 'Type <type> is not defined.' And most, but not all of these errors are in the same .vb page.
Does anyone know the best way to fix this?

I recently converted a web application of ours to VS 2008 so that we could upgrade to .net 3.51 framework.
I have been making some changes to the layout, to take advantage of ajax and minimize the amout of data needing to be loaded and the number of postbacks processed.
The problem I am having is when I try to save the data.
The page postback calls a local Sub which reads the form data into local variables and then passes these variables to our assembly.
The primary assembly has 70 parameters which are used to populate one of the tables in our database.
So I have 70 local variables just for this call plus a variable reference to the output of the assembly which contains a property for each of the columns in the associated database record.
There are some additional assemblies called to update other tables so, in all there are 121 locally defined variables in this sub.
Bear in mind that this sub is called from the page load event which has 93 of it's own locally declared variables.
Here is what is happening, when I run the code I am using cdate() to convert the value of a text box to datetime and pass it to my assembly. When doing so it throws a conversion error.
So I created a local datetime variable and converted the value of the control to the datetime and passed the variable to the assembly.
No more error, but the proc did not save the data as it was supposed to.
What I noticed in debugging, on the locals tab, is that every local datetime variable displayed the following message:
Cannot evaluate expression because we are stopped in a place where garbage collection is impossible, possibly because the code of the current method may be optimized
I also noticed that on the watch window the same message would display if I attempted to reference any of the datetime controls on the form.
There are only 3 variables and 3 datetime controls that appear to be affected. the controls are all html input boxes. Every other variable and control on the form behaves normally and I can see their values while debugging, it is just these six that are exhibiting the problem, whats more is that they are not new controls to the form.

I want to get "PrintScreen" of Client PC when he access a particular Web Page.
I tried GOOGLEing this IDEA! but was unable to get much,
Infact what i got know on stackoverflow itself is Javascript PrintScreen
JavaScript cannot be used for such functionality.
So, I would like to know can it be done in Ajax,ASP.NET with C#/VB or in PHP because at the end i want to save this image/s continously to database either SQL Server or MySQL or Oracle.
Is this feasible by ActiveX Objects?
To my knowledge, it will be difficult to go ahead with javascript.Yet i plan to use more of client resourses than server resources while executing this functionality.

In this asp.net web application, users can upload files to the server through a web interface. All the uploaded files are save in a server side folder. If I want to create a new win form desktop client (actually, its a WPF application) which can be used to upload files to that same server side folder as web interface does, how can I share that server side folder with that win form client?

I'm trying to use the COM interop assembly to export some data to an Excel workbook for an ASP.NET web application. This works fine in development, since the server and the client are the same machine. However, when deployed, this is not the case. The deployed version does not throw an exception, but it also does not open Excel on the local machine (since ASP.NET is executed server-side, this is pretty obvious).
How do I go about creating an Excel application on the client's machine?

I have a server application that runs in a hosted environment but creates print jobs in the client's local network (behind NAT; the mechanics of this is not relevant).
In order to send the print job to the printer that is attached to the workstation, I need to identify the workstation. The users move around between workstations, so I can't permanently associate a user with a workstation/printer. The trivial solution is to require the user to identify the machine he is logging in from, for instance by selecting from a list, but that's an inconvenience and subject to user error.
Options I have eliminated:
Host header variables (nothing identifiable is sent) Cookies, in support of a user selection. This somewhat addresses the potential for user error, but not really. HTML5 DOM Storage - is not supported by the client's browser
Edit: I do have the option of puttnig this particular function (create a print job) into a thick client app. The app can then of course be configured and the problem goes away. But the user experience will suffer from having to switch between the browser and a Windows app.
