DataSource Controls :: SQL Server Management Stutio Cannot Be Installed In Vista Home?

Mar 2, 2010

My laptop is running Vista Home Premium. I recently reinstalled Windows from recovery and ran updates. I set up IIS 6 and downloaded Visual Web Develper Express 2008 including SQL Server Express 2008. They all look fine, and I am able to set up database from Visual Studio. But I am not able to download Management Studio Express 2008. Each time it lead me to a file list after downloading, but not installation. What wrong with it?

State Management :: State Service Not Installed On Vista?

Jun 6, 2010

I am a Wed Developer setting up a Vista Home Premium SP2 laptop machine to use for a particular project. I get the following error when running the application:Unable to make the session state request to the session state server. Please ensure that the ASP.NET State service is started and that the client and server ports are the same. If the server is on a remote machine, please ensure that it accepts remote requests by checking the value of KEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesaspnet_stateParametersAllowRemoteConnection. If the server is on the local machine, and if the before mentioned registry value does not exist or is set to 0, then the state server connection string must use either 'localhost' or '' as the server name.After a lot of researching I understand the state service needs to be running. Only problem is it is nowhere to be found in my Services list! Does anybody know how it install it,I am running:Windows Vista Home Premium SP2
IIS7 SQL EXPRESS .NET Framework v4.0.30319_X86

SQL Server Reporting Services Not Able To Install On Windows Vista Home Premium

Aug 26, 2010

Recently I had a weird problem while trying to install SQL Server Reporting Service in my local PC. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium and I wanted to configure SSRS in my PC. During the installation, the setup wizard listed all the services that we want to install and I found that only Reporting Server checkbox option was disabled and I wondered why??? I thought it may be becuase of some installation problem and tried again and its useless... I googled lot of sites for 3 days and finally found that due to some IIS issues, it is not possible to install Reporting Server in Vista Home Premium version. Reporting Server needs some specific IIS features to be installed in the machine.

But unfortunately those features are not available for Home Premium users which in term restricts users not to install reporting server in our PCs... Also, Microsoft has accepted it as an issue and its not possible to get it install in Home Premium...just wanted to share and might be useful for someone like me.

DataSource Controls :: SQL Server Management Utility With SQL Server Standard 2008

Apr 26, 2010

I have SQL Server Standard 2008 installed on my machine, alongside Visual Studio 2008.

My current hosting provider (not a huge fan) requires me to access my db's remotely via SQL Server Management Utility. To date, I've been doing it by connecting remotely in VS2008. Their troubleshooting documentation/steps, though, are for the SQL Server Management Express 2008, and i'm having a lot of connectivity issues with them.

I followed the steps here: to "add additional features to an existing installation" - but when I did so, the setup wizard indicated that the Management Tools-Basic were already installed.

DataSource Controls :: Installed SQL Express Instance Name?

Feb 4, 2010

I'm trying to open SQL 2008 Express .mdf file in VS 2008 but I got the "...A downgrade path is not supported...." error. I have SQL 2005 express with its management studio too.

I expect that SQL 2008 express was installed with VS2008 because when I try to install it again the installation wizard shows that I have it installed already with Service Pack1.

I read the solution on some threads:

In Visual Studio, go to Tools -> Options -> Database Tools -> Database Connections, fill the SQL Server Instance Name with the name of SQL Server 2008 Express instance But how do I know the name of SQL Server 2008 Express instance?

DataSource Controls :: Running Sql Server Management Studio?

Aug 11, 2010

I am having a problem connecting to my SQL Server 2008 Express database with SQL Management Studio Express and from the website at the same time.

Everytime I want to view any pages in my site that access the database, I have to close management studio and restart the server for some reason or i get a failed login error message. Then when I want to go back to SSMS I get this error message:

Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc)

Additional Information: Unable to open the physical file c:..... Operating system error 32: "32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)" (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5120)

Is it NOT possible to work on the database through SSMS at the same time as viewing pages in the website that access the database?

I sure hope that there is a work around or something for this.

Just in case my connection string is:

<add name="ApplicationServices" connectionString="data source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

DataSource Controls :: Managing Users In SQL Server 2008 Management Studio?

Jul 12, 2010

I restored a database from another server, and everything looks good except the users.

I'm managing all this from SQL Server 2008 Management Studio as SA.

The users are present in the databaseName > security > users section, and they exist in databaseServer > Security > Logins. However I can't change anything in the databaseName > security > users section, because when I try and make a change, and then I hit OK to apply, it says "login name must be specified". But the login name field is grayed out and I can't modify it(even though I'm logged into the machine as Administrator and SQL as SA).

Also, in the user mapping section, when I try to map one of the users to a database, it says 'create failed user already exists'...but I don't want to create the user, I just want to map that user to the appropriate databases...

State Management :: Redirecting To Home Page When Session Expires?

Oct 14, 2010

my web app doesn't use authorization in web.config, but i want to detect when a session has expired and redirect to the home page.I have searched and found solutions that rely on the web app using authorization. Other solutions have implemented a user control to drop in every page.Obviosly i don't want to manually check for null on every session variable on every event of the web app, so i want the app to do it automatically.

<sessionState timeout="120"></sessionState>
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms name="myappCookie" loginUrl="~/index.aspx" timeout="120"/>

doesn't work for me since i don't have allow or deny settings, since my app doesn't need authentication.

MVC :: Why Isn't Views / Home / Home.Master File Published When Publish Website

Aug 19, 2010

I spent the better part of today hunting down an elusive error. I was getting a message saying that it couldn't find the Index view for the Home controller, and it gave a list of locations it searched, e.g., ~/Views/Home/Index.aspx. This was really confusing as the file definitely existing and was at ~/Views/Home/Index.aspx, the first place in the list of locations it searched for the view!

What I eventually discovered was that there was a file that did not get published when I used Visual Studio's "Publish" feature (this is on the "Build" menu). That file was Views/Home/Home.master, and (as you can probably guess) is the master file used by Views/Home/Index.aspx. Once I copied that file into place manually, it started working. But I am left wondering--why??? Why does this file not get published? It's a part of my project, I can see it in the solution explorer, and it's obviously a critical file that's necessary for the MVC app to run. It has the same permissions as every other file in my project. So why wouldn't it get copied? And how can I fix it so it does get copied?

The Web Server Doesn't Appear To Have FrontPage Server Extensions Installed

I'm using Windows 7 and trying to create a HTTP website from Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. I keep getting this error:

Unable to create the Web site ''. The Web server doesn't appear to have FrontPage Server Extensions installed.

the FrontPage Server extensions are obsolete now and not needed anymore for apps. I still used the aspnet_regiis.exe -i -enable command. I have the following versions of .net Framework installed on my Windows 7 machine: v1.0, v1.1, v2.0,v3.0, v3.5, and v4.0
