DataSource Controls :: SQL Fails - Syntax For SELECT & INSERT

Apr 19, 2010

I get the following error on the e.Command.Parameters("@latestRowId").Value line. It was working, but now not and I'm not sure why? Conversion from type 'DBNull' to type 'Integer' is not valid.

DataSource Controls :: LinqDataSource.Select Syntax?

Jan 14, 2010

Where can I find documentation on the syntax that is expected for LinqDataSource.Select? It seems to be different from what I would do with Linq inline in C# code. For example, concatenateing something in Linq I would normally just do this in the projection:

new { FullName = (person.FirstName + " " + person.LastName ) }
However, with a LinqDataSource the only way I've found to do this is like this:
new ( String.Concat(person.FirstName, " ", person.LastName) as FullName)

I literally spent hours trying to figure this out, and only succeeded when I found a blog where someone gave this verbatim as an example. So I still don't understand why the syntax is different, the braces versus parens, aliasing, Concat operators. Next time I do this I want a better understanding so I am not playing this guessing game. It's like being handed a compiler, and trying to write a program when you don't know what language the compiler compiles.1. Are there different "flavors" of Linq? Like a VB Linq, and C# Linq?2. If so, is the LinqDataSource using a VB flavor of Linq?3. Really, what is really important to me, where can I find documentation on this particular falvor of Linq that the LinqDataSource expects? The documentation for the LinqDataSource itself gives nothing more than extremely simplistic examples.

Forms Data Controls :: Retain Values In A FormView When Validations Fails Or The SQL Fails On An Insert?

Oct 6, 2010

To me this should be much easier, but I can't seem to retain the values that are put in the Insert template upon a validation failure or when the sql fails. This will prevent the user from having to retype everything agin in the event of a failure.

As you can see I am using the Sub Insert_Click and not using an insert through the wizard. so the fields are unbound textboxes on the form. There are 2 dropdowns that provide choices for the other fields.

I pasted in the code using the text only option becuase the format was getting messed up. I probably need more background on why the fields are blanking out.

DataSource Controls :: Insert A "Select User" Row In Linq For A Dropdown List?

Sep 7, 2010

I'm new to Linq. I have searched and searched the web for a soluion, and can't find anything. I have a Linq query and I want to insert a row ("Select User") to the top before I pass it to the drop down list. I've been trying to use the Union but to now avail (it keeps telling me that my object doesn't support the Union method). My code, prior to attempting to inser a row, is very simple.

public SelectList DropDown_Users()
var context = new VivarianDataContext();
var query = from t in context.AspnetUsers
select new { t.UserId, t.LastName };
list = new SelectList(query.AsEnumerable(), "UserId", "LastName");
return list;

Now I try to insert a row and I found this on the internet and it seems to say that his solution will work. But it is filled with syntax errors. [URL]

I tried to implement it using the following code, but it doesn't compile.

public SelectList DropDown_Users()
SelectList list;
//get the original data
var context = new SQL2005633131VivarianDataContext();
var query = from t in context.AspnetUsers
select new { t.UserId, t.LastName };
//create a dummy table with an empty row
var AllUsers = new List<AspnetUsers>();
var BlankUser = new AspnetUsers()
{UserId=System.Guid.Empty, LastName="Select One"};
//use Union to join the data - ERRORS HERE
var newTable = AllUsers.Union(query);
list = new SelectList(newTable.AsEnumerable(), "UserId", "LastName");
return list;

Forms Data Controls :: How To Repopulate Insertitemfields When Detailsview Insert Fails Sql Business Logic

Feb 7, 2011

After hitting the insert button the insert stored proc is run. if the record already exists then stored proc returns a specific value.I need to refill the details view textboxes with the values the user typed in.I am using the ItemInserted event handler.I seem to reference the control okay but the text doesn't change...even when I replace the command.parameter to just a literal text like "test".

TextBox tNPA = DetailsView1.FindControl("InsertName") as TextBox;
tNPA.Text = command.Parameters[0].Value.ToString();

So what am I missing. I also tried a detailsview1.databind() before and then tried after the above line and still no luck.

SQL Server :: SQL Query Within A Form Fails With "parser Error" - Syntax Not Correct?

I've created an Expression Web form with a SQL datasource which is doing a query/select statement.Somehow it appears that I'm making a syntax error. When I divide the query in two and execute them separate, it works fine.I need to filter for an EventType, Region and Today's date + a custom interval (like 7 day's for a week)he parameters come from a search form where the user can select these values via a dropdown list.The two separate (and working) queries within my form are:Query nr.1 :

"Select * from Events WHERE (([EventType] LIKE '%' + @EventType + '%') AND ([Region] LIKE '%' + @Region + '%'))">
<asp:formparameter DefaultValue="%" FormField="EventType" />
