How To Create Users In A Membership Table Without Using CreateUser
Jun 2, 2010
I want to migrate users and posts from an existing forum I am using to a ASP.NET membership table without using CreateUser. Basically I want to maintain userIDs so that when I migrate posts they continue to associate with the correct users. Is there a way to do this or would I be better off just using CreateUser and then finding a way to re-assign the post-by-UserIDs to the correct new IDs?

There are lots of posts about this issue but I can't work out the answers as most of them are for C# or similar. I'm trying to automatically insert the UserId generated by Membership into a custom table. I have membership working correctly, as well as the custom table (I'm able to insert other things from the registration form). But I can't get it to extract the generated UserId and insert it into the custom table. Here's my code:
[Code]....
As you can see I've experimented with the parameters for inserting the record, but that doesn't work (I get an error about ProviderKey not being a part of system.web.security.membershipuser).

I'm having issues using the membership.createuser method. My code is below, I get a null exception as runtime.
Dim username As String = userNameTxt.Text
Dim password As String = passwordTxt.Text
Dim email As String = emailTxt.Text
Dim status As New MembershipCreateStatus
Dim blank As String = ""
Dim provider As MembershipProvider
Dim providerUserKey As New System.Object
Dim user As MembershipUser
user = provider.CreateUser(username, password, email, blank, blank, True, providerUserKey, status)

Is there possibility to create new user with Membership.CreateUser but not to specify the user's password?
I tried with minRequiredPasswordLength="0" minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters="0", but it didn't work.
I also tried with "" and DBNull.Value for password in the function but it didn't work.
Is there a way to do this?

I have set up Membership and Roles and can create users and login using the ASp Login control. However I need to associate users with customers (in a Customers table in the database) and display content according to the customer that the user belongs to. Is the best way of doing this to create a foreign key field in the aspnet_Users table relating back to Customers table which would have to be updated manually after creating the user or is there a better way?

I'm creating a new middle tier where all of our client calls will go through a WCF service. We're using ASP.NET membership with the service in order to authenticate users. The middle tier will be hitting an existing database in which we already have an InetUsers table containing usernames and passwords.This is where it starts to get messy. This new middle tier will be used by our web application, but not by our existing desktop application, which will - until we rewrite it at some point in the future - be using the old COM+ middle tier. Administration of the users for the web application takes place in the desktop application. In other words, users will be created and passwords set and changed from within the desktop application, which in turn hits the already existing InetUsers table.Ideally, what will happen is when we deploy the new middle tier, we'll take all of the users from the InetUsers table and create records for them in aspnet_Users and aspnet_Membership. Then we'll set a trigger on the InetUsers table to keep aspnet_Users and aspnet_Membership up-to-date.There's a whole bunch of questions wrapped up in this, so I'll try and list them all out here:Is this the right approach? Obviously having this data in two places isn't ideal, but bear in mind here that I'm not the final decision maker here and we're kinda stuck with some legacy stuff here, at least for now. Still - maybe there's a better way.In the same vein - would we be better off coding our own membership provider rather than using the SqlMembershipProvider? How difficult/easy is it to do so?If we use this approach, I plan on using the aspnet_Membership_XXXX stored procedures for the initial population of the tables as well as in the triggers. Having done some research into this, it appears that if I want to call aspnet_Membership_CreateUser directly from SQL (ie in a trigger...) rather than using the API, I have to store clear text passwords since I can't get the salt and the hash right otherwise. Is this true?Does any of this even make sense or am I going about this the wrong way to begin with?

I had to upgrade a sites ecuroty from a custom system to .net membership. I created all the users like this.
ds = Wservices.SelectBulkUsers()
If Not ds Is Nothing AndAlso Not ds.Tables(0) Is Nothing AndAlso ds.Tables(0).Rows.Count > 0 Then
For Each dr In ds.Tables(0).Rows
username = dr("username")
password = dr("password")
role = dr("SecurityClearance")
email = dr("email")
Dim newUser As MembershipUser = Membership.CreateUser(username, password, email, "", "", True, status)
Select Case role
Case "1"
Roles.AddUserToRole(username, "normal user")
Case "2"
Roles.AddUserToRole(username, "administrator")
Case "3"
Roles.AddUserToRole(username, "super administrator")
End Select
If newUser Is Nothing Then
errorMsg = username & " - " & status.ToString & "<br />"
End If
Next
litResult.Text = errorMsg
End If
I thought everything was fine and then went through the labourious task of replacing all the usersids used a as a foreign key in all the tables. It was only after doing this and trying to log on I couldnt, and noticed the membership table was empty. I assumed (stupidly) as it had done the users/ roles it must have done the membership. As I have already re-assigned the old user ids I dont want to import again as the userid will chnage. So my question is: Can I create a membership for each of the users in my aspnet_users table? I have the passwords etc in varchar fields at min from old table.

Is it possible to have an ASP.NET website which allows users to register and login, without using a MembershipProvider?
And instead just work directly towards custom database tables which stores user information?

I have a problem with my membership management. I moved the aspnet membership database to my MSSQL server and I would like to create an add user form not using the CreateUserWizard (I would like to add more information then in the simple CUW). I've created the form and I would like to use the Membership.CreateUser method to add the user. After running the script (VB) the user is available in the aspnet_Users table, also in the aspnet_UserInRoles table but not in the aspnet_Membership table. I'm sure that something is wrong with the configuration, I just can't find what.

I have a CreateUserWizard control to be able to allow an anonymous user to create an account. Provided that all entered information is correct that the user enters, a new account is created for him/her. But also, when this user is created, I want to [b]also[/b] add the username to another table in my ASPNETDB database. How exactly can I "tap" into the event that creates a user and adds it to the appropriate tables (aspnet_Users, Members, etc.) and make it add the username to yet another table?

I am using CreateUserWizard control where I collect personal information from the user on the first step (ie. name, address, tel, mobile etc) then on the second step I collect information for membership service (ie. user name, password, email etc). When user clicks Create button, information is sent to two different tables in the same database. Everything works fine but one.
In the first step where I collect personal information, I also collect details about Interest which is a CheckBoxList (CheckBoxList is getting values from Interests table: 1-White, 2-Green, 3-Brown, 4-Maroon, 5-Yellow).
What I want to do is, when client selects his itnerest categories and clicks Create button, to send selected values from CheckBoxList into the third table called Categories. I want values to be registered into the CatCode column in Interests table as comma delimited. For example: if client selected "White", "Green" and "Yellow", appropriate values for those interests (such as 1, 3, 5) to be registered under Categories table CatCode column (like: 1,3,5).

I have an asp.net web app that uses forms-based authentication, a SqlMembershipProvider (using an encrypted password format), and a SqlRoleProvider. I need to know if it's possible to administer the users (create new users, assign them to roles, etc.) from a windows application - the powers that be don't want any administrative functionality in the web app itself.
Here is the membership provider definition from web.config:
[code]....
So, obviously, I have a Sql Server database that contains the users and roles for the web app. I'd like to create a separate windows app that references the web app assembly, and use the configured MembershipProvider, RoleProvider, and machineKey to create users, assign users to roles, etc. If that's not possible, I can duplicate the configuration settings from web.config within the windows app. But I don't know how to do this either.

I have a database of users that we used to have on a different system. The users already have their username and passwords associated with.
Now we are switching the entire system to .Net , and we will be using the membership to authenticate the users and start creating the new users with the wizard.
My question is : how could we import the users from a different database (mysql) , to the membership database on MS SQL ?
And also the passwords on the mysql database are in clear text , when we import them to the membership database on ms sql , is it going to apply the hash on them ?

Does an asp.net website developed locally with VWD 2010 and SQL Express need an SQL server on the the remote webserver or does asp.net have sufficient functionality to handle the SQL connection & requests? In particular I am using the membership features of asp.net to log users in and out.

I currently built a custom form using VS 2005 to accommodate administrators when deleting users from the membership "aspnetdb" database.
I set the method for the objectDataSource to use "DeleteUser(String username, Boolean delete All Related Data), returns Boolean".
When I run the application and click the delete link from my gridview I receive the following error message:
"Value cannot be null. Parameter name: username"
How do I get the value for username?
