Visual Studio 2008 - Developing Applications Remotely And Best Practice?

Jul 14, 2010

Can you edit a website (in Visual Studio) on a server from your PC by going:File -> Open Web Site -> File System -> My Network Places -> Entire Network -> Microsoft Windows Network -> FooDomain -> FooServer -> Foo_Public_Shared_Folder (which is actually a web applicaiton in C:InetpubwwwrootfoobarWebApp).I suspect it is bad practice to edit a website that is pubished on a server like this - or at least highly unusual? Would I be right in saying that you should create a new website on your local PC then build and publish to the server in question?

One last point as well -if you need to make a copy of a published website and make some enhancements without losing the original - how can you do this i.e. you don't have the original Visual Studio project only the published site (i.e. this could be made by some web site authoring/wizard tool).

Developing Rich Web Applications For Mobile Platforms (against Platform Specific Standalone Apps)?

Oct 18, 2010

I am new to mobile app development and I dont want restrict myself to one platform. Some days ago I read an article that stressed on the fact that soon web apps running on mobile browsers may replace dedicated apps (at least for non-game apps). I want to develop a social networking web app that any phone can run via the browser. These are the things I would like expert comments on:

Resources/Guidelines for developing great UIs for rich mobile web apps (HTML5?, existing APIs/Frameworks I should know)The best ways to increase performance(a reusable native simple browser app per platform that caches, provides a uniform interface to the web apps, access to sensors, APIs, features like drag drop etc for that there already one?) How do I test the apps for various major platforms and across various devices (small/large screens, touch phones etc)Best ways to manage multiple device compatibility.. (how to best handle non-uniformity of functionality on various devices/browsers on the server side using ASP.NET)

WCF / ASMX :: Building Services To Work With Web Applications And Console Applications?

Jun 7, 2010

I've been worked with web services so far, and I'm interested in expanding my services to console applications as well so I started digging up with WCF but I'm conserned that I won't be able to use the HttpContext collection that I've been used to do with web services one important thing which is to generate a random value from HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables["ALL_HTTP"] that I need to reckon if it's the same or at least near what machine that is calling my service. How can I overcome this problem?

I need to know what machine is calling to count the number of attempts to login into my system for example. So must do it inside of the svc code otherwise if I let the client inform what ip address or what computer he is using, anyone could forge this argument and surpass by another machine. May be I'm approaching this matter wrongly. And I should count the number of attempts per state session, but how is it done?

Configuration :: Deploying Web Applications With Sub Web Applications?

Apr 22, 2010

Our corporate intranet is designed so that each web application is a child application in the primary application.. Everything has worked fine with Visual Studio 2008 and even in 2010 running the website locally works great, the output directory for the child apps is and the ProjectName.dll copies to that directory.. When I do a publish however it does not and I have to manually copy the dll from the bin folder in the project folder to the parent bin folder, this isn't hard of course but more of a pain in the butt each time I need to publish something. I made sure the output directory is correct for both debug and release yet on publish is just copies it to the child bin and not the parent bin as needed.

Currently there is a dashboard on the homepage of the website where all the pending approvals are displayed in a webpart. I want to build a plugin for MS Outlook so that whenever there is a new request for approval I want that request to show up in MS outlook. Where do I start with this? Do I have to expose my business logic layer through webservices?

Developing An API For A Downloadable Product?

Dec 30, 2010

We've got a product built using ASP.NET web forms (3.5), and are investigating adding an API to allow other applications to access data and business logic within the application.

What is the best way to implement this? I'm inclined to go down the route of using Http Handlers to read posted XML and return XML, but I'm sure there must be a better way. Is it advisable to use something like WCF instead? As the product will be downloaded and installed by users on their own servers (instead of hosted), it seems like there's a lot of pressure to get it right the first time as making changes will be hard once users start downloading and using the product.

C# - Developing A Great Project ?

Dec 9, 2010

I am going to start a new project as a project trainee. And my project is making a job-portal site. And I have done some work with winform but I am a newbie to,css, html and java script. And my expection is to make this project is very very great at all, and I am ready to work a lot and lot to make this project successfull. Amd reason to make good project is learning.

Now I want to know that how should I start ?

What should I do first ?

Which things I should keep in my mind by doing this project ?

Which structure I should follow ?

Should I use mvc (I dont know more about mvc) ?

How my database should be ?

Which database I should use as a backend ?

Which facilities should be provided to the user for more user freindliness ?

What shoud I use for validation like javascript or ajax or regex ?

Will there be a need of providing reporting services, if yes what should I use to do that ?

And how can I know that what will be there at the side of admin and at the side of the employers as we can know at the side of the job seeker ? this website should include as a functionality.

Should my database has normalization ?

How can I know more and requirement about this project ?

I am asking these type of number of questions because I want to learn as possible as more. And want to involve as possible as more functionalities in this project. And second reason for knowing the answers of above question is I can come to know that which thing I should follow like one question is which database I should use then as an answer of this question I can come to know that which database is more used in the industry and is required to learn first.
