Custom Server Controls :: Unable To Use A Web User Control Inside Another Web User Control

Mar 10, 2011

I have a web user control that represents a simple message box. It is used to display simple messages like "Item has been deleted", or "The item was saved successfully".

On the other hand, I have another web user control that represents the item in the form of an editable form (I made this a user control because this is used in two different pages). I want to embed an instance of the message box user control inside the editable form. I am writing this right after the @Control directive:

[Code]....

Instead of using @Register directives, I register the user controls in web.config and so far this has worked just fine.

With the above markup, the project compiles, but whenever I try to navigate to a page that contains this construct, I get an HttpParseException exception. Furthermore, Visual Studio states that the tack w7rc9:MessageBox doesn't represent a known control.

What am I doing wrong?

Web Forms :: User Controls Are Null When Referenced Inside The Code Behind For The User Control?

Sep 1, 2010

I have an ASP.NET 4.0 application with some simple user controls. The user controls work fine on the design surface (VS.NET 2010), but when they're loaded during application execution, nothing shows up.

Futhermore, the various child controls of the user controls are null when referenced inside the code behind for the user control.

The code behind for the user control executes as expected, but any reference to child controls are null.

It's like ASP.NET is never parsing the ASCX to create the instances of the child controls.

C# - Show / Hide Using Javascript On A Control Inside A ASCX Control In A Gridview

Oct 8, 2010

I have written a web usercontrol (ascx). Inside, there is a Panel that I want to show/hide on click of a hyperlink inside the usercontrol.

Normally, this is easy just by doing something like this (the onclick attribute is added to the hyperlink on prerender):

var PanelToShow = document.getElementById('<%=PanelInvoiceHasBeenCreated.ClientID %>');
if (PanelToHide != null) {
PanelToHide.style.display = 'none';
}

but because the ascx control is held within the gridview, the above will assess all the controls (of which there are many in the gridview) with the name 'PanelInvoiceHasBeenCreated'. The only time it will work is when there is 1 row in the gridview. Currently, with my existing code, if I click the hyperlink in any row, it shows/hides the panel in the bottom row of the gridview!

Therefore, my question is how do I get the actual, unique ID I need to show/hide on the correct control in the correct row?

Web User Control With Javascript Used Multiple Times On A Page - How To Make Javascript Functions Point At The Correct Controls

Apr 12, 2010

I think I summed up the question in the title. Here is some further elaboration...I have a web user control that is used in multiple places, sometimes more than once on a given page.The web user control has a specific set of JavaScript functions (mostly jQuery code) that are containted within *.js files and automatically inserted into page headers.However, when I want to use the control more than once on a page, the *.js files are included 'n' number of times and, rightly so, the browser gets confused as to which control it's meant to be executing which function on.What do I need to do in order to resolve this problem? I've been staring at this all day and I'm at a loss.

The above code isn't displaying hint text when the textbox retreives focus.

I think there is something wrong with this getElementsByTagName("asp:TextBox"); , I have also tried getElementsByTagName("TextBox"); , getElementsByTagName(":textbox"); and getElementsByTagName("input"); .

But no one of them gets the textboxes array.

Can anyone tell what will be the correct syntax for getting all the textboxes inside a create user wizard control using getElementsByTagName()?

Adding To Page Control Collection From Inside A User Control?

Feb 12, 2011

I have an asp.net usercontrol which represents a "popup" dialog. Basically, it's a wrapper for the jQuery UI dialog which can be subclassed to easily make dialogs.

As part of this control, I need to inject a div into the page the control is used on, either at the very top or very bottom of the form so that when the popup is instantiated, it's parent is changed to this div. This allows "nested" popups without the child popup being trapped inside the parent popup. The trouble is, I can't find a safe way to inject this div into the page. A usercontrol doesn't have a preinit event, so I can't do it there, and calling Page.Form.Controls.Add(...) in Init, Load or PreRender causes the standard exception "The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload phases."

I thought I had found a solution by using...

ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(Page, Me.GetType, UniqueID + "_Dialog_Div", containerDiv, False)

... which seemed to work well normally, but recently a coworker tried putting an UpdatePanel inside the dialog and now she's getting the error "The script tag registered for type 'ASP.controls_order_viewzips_ascx' and key 'ctl00$ContentBody$OViewZips_Dialog_Div' has invalid characters outside of the script tags: . Only properly formatted script tags can be registered."

How are you supposed to add controls to the pages control collection from inside a user control?

Web Forms :: Register JavaScript In UserControl

Mar 1, 2011

I have a UserControl, ASPX page, a Class file and a JS file. In Class file, I have a method for building and registering textbox controls:

ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(this,
typeof(Page),
"onfocus", jsText.ToString(),
true);

jsText is nothing but Name and Value pair strings. Example : "KEY1:txtName, KEY2:txtDOB" In UserControl, I am calling the above Class method to pass all the textboxes and calling the JS file to validate the registered controls. Then, I am calling that Usercontrol in ASPX page. Here I am unable to validate the controls as it is saying "KEY is undefined".

C# - How To Register A Javascript Function To Run With Every Postback

Mar 17, 2010

I have a treeview in a user control. I need to run a javascript function with every asynch postback to scroll the div it's in to the right position. I've got it working, but I think there has to be a "cleaner" way to do it. In the Page_Load function of the control, I have the following code. Is there a better way to do it?

ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this.UpdatePanel1, this.GetType(), "key" + DateTime.Now.Ticks, "RestorePosition();", true);

For the benefit of anyone searching for this answer, here is what I finally did that worked. At the top of the ascx page, I have the following code:

<script type="text/javascript">
function pageLoad(sender, args) {
Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().add_beginRequest(SavePosition);
Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().add_endRequest(RestorePosition);
}
function SavePosition(sender, args) {
document.getElementById('hdnScrollSaver').value = document.getElementById('reportTreeViewdiv').scrollTop;
}
function RestorePosition(sender, args) {
document.getElementById('reportTreeViewdiv').scrollTop = document.getElementById('hdnScrollSaver').value;
}
</script>

And then I wrapped the treeview in a div tag as follows:

<div class="reportTreeView" id="reportTreeViewdiv">
<asp:TreeView ID="TreeView1" runat="server" OnTreeNodePopulate="TreeView1_TreeNodePopulate"
OnSelectedNodeChanged="TreeView1_SelectedNodeChanged" PathSeparator="|" SkinID="ReportTreeView" />
</div>
