Security :: Digest Authentication In Web Service Error / The Request Failed With HTTP Status 401

Apr 20, 2010

I am connecting to remote server for web service using ASP.NET 3.5 web site. something like, [URL]. Remote server is providing digest authentication to access the web service. I dont have access to modify authentication on the remote server but I have an windows account on that server. If I try to Access service WSDL through programming I get the following error:

The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized. Same web service if I try to access through browser, [URL], it asks for user name and password. Entered windows account user name and password, still getting error: You are not authorized to view this page, HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized. How to pass the digest authentication credentials to the web service through visual studio or any other programmatic method?

WCF / ASMX :: The Request Failed With Http Status 401 Unauthorized. Web Service?

Mar 16, 2011

I am trying to call webservice from my web application. The web application had integrated windows authentication. I've written custome principal class to do authorization. But when I give call to my web service with default credentials it gives me 'the request failed with http status 401 unauthorized.' error.

When I give call to my local webservice it is running fine (It also has integrated windows authentication) But when I add reference of same web service from QA server I am getting this error. Not sure what is happening. I also tried

WS.PreAuthenticate = false;
WS.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;

Report Viewer Error: The Request Failed With HTTP Status 401: Unauthorized?

Sep 9, 2010

I have a c# web application with contains reports in remote processing mode. I am using the report-viewer control to render the reports. When I run the application in debug mode, I'm able to view my reports however when I publish the application to a different server I get this error message:The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized.

My report server is on a different server than the location of my published web application. I have added new role assignment to my report server and also added to my web.config but the error persists. I think I am missing something in my aspx page for reportviewer.

Firefox Asks For Username/password On Every HTTP Request With Digest Authentication Enabled On IIS6

Nov 12, 2010

I've recently enabled Digest Authentication on an intranet website/application I am creating for my company in ASP.NET.

The reason I have done so is because Windows Authentication seemed to only work for some users, and not for others. I could not figure out why nor do I know enough about IIS to try and trace the issue. After some trial and error, I found that digest authentication seemed to give me the behaviour that I wanted. That is: allow only users with a valid account on the domain to log in to the website with their credentials.

The problem now, is that Firefox (3+) seems to ask for the user to authenticate on every HTTP request sent to the server. This does not appear to occur in Internet Explorer (6+) or Chrome.

I've tried searching for solutions but I always arrive at dead-ends. I'll find a discussion about the issue, and every posted solution leads to a dead link...or it's on Experts Exchange and I don't have access to view to solution.

The issue appears to be related (from what I've read) to the way the different browsers send their authentication headers vs how IIS interprets them. I'm not sure what I can do to change this though? One of the solutions I had found mentioned writing an ISAPI filter to fix this, but of course the link to the finished filter was broken and I have no idea how to go about making one myself.

I've tried messing with the NTLM and other auth related strings in about:config to try and force Firefox to trust my server but that doesn't seem to work either.

From a few other sources I've read, it appears that everything should work if I switch back to Windows Authentication, but then I'm back at square one where the authentication would work only for some users and not others.

A solution for either problem would work for me, but I have very little information for the Windows Authentication issue. If someone could guide me through tracing the problem I'd gladly post more information for it as well.

Calling Remote Web Service -- "The Request Failed With HTTP Status 401: Unauthorized"?

Jun 19, 2010

I am calling a remote service and authenticating using a certificate. When testing with a Console App, everything works fine. When calling from an ASP.NET Website (.NET 4.0, IIS7) I receive a response code of 401 -- Unauthorized.I am adding the certificate using code such as:

var client = new TheGeneratedProxy();
client.ClientCertificates.Add(new X509Certificate("D:cert.pfx", "myPassword"));

(NOTE: I have also loaded the .pfx into the local Certificate Store using IE. The certificate is loaded into my "Personal" store -- so I suspect this to be the problem, since the Website will be running under a different account.)

I created aMicrosoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportViewer with a window application. It worked fine when I was in net A with domain A. My application is now moved to net B with domain B. However when I login to my computer I still login netA with domain A, userID and password for A. I then use a A/B switch to switch to net B to run my application running ReportViewer (no login directly to B). But when I run ReportViewer I got errors like below.

SQL Reporting :: ReportViewer In Gridview > "The Request Failed With HTTP Status 401: Unauthorized"?

Feb 20, 2011

I have a reportviewer control which is running well on a form. I dont receive any error message. I can pass parameters successfully.The problem starts after placing Reportview control into a grid. I need several reports for different parameters at the same time. In this case, i receive boring "The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized" error. There is no reason to receive this message as reportviewer working on the form seperate.Is there any restriction not to use ReportViewer in the below.

C# - Web Service Receive HTTP POST Request (500) Internal Server Error?

Nov 15, 2010

I am currently writing a C# web service which has several methods, one of which has to receive HTTP POST requests. The first thing i have done is alter the web.config file in the web service project as below.

But when i run this i get "The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error". If i remove the parameter, by removing the stringbuilder and byte code, as well as having no parameter in the web service, it works. So it is obviously a problem with the parameters. I actually want to send more data, and was using a string[] parameter in the web service, but this also failed.

Now the Environment is WIN2K3 Server is my web server Database is SQL 2008 is in the domain itself I have deployed the application which was using the SSO from the parent Share Point Site and was having forms authentication Now the Users to access the application can be outside domain /inside domain so we have logic to get the internal employee or external But the Problem starts when we have got the request to have the application ready for Internal Users like a Intranet application and we need to have the windows authetication in place Now the problem was with WINDOWS authentication I am not able to get to the HTTP Handlers I have in my code thats really wierd as all was working well having the forms auth. I have changed the following things to make it windows auth. Changed the AUthentication in WEB.Config Unchecked the Anynomous user from Directory Security in IIS.

My Problem is ALL application works well except when I tried to call http_handler It is giving me 404 0 2 in IIS logs page not found when I tried to say window.location = "myhandler.myextension?id=285dc559-8293-44f3-a018-4e7024c82e5b" Gives me Page not found error.
