Why Did MVC Team Choose "../../Content/Site.css" Rather Than "~/Content/Site.css" In Site.Master Page

Dec 14, 2010

<link href="../../Content/Site.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />

The above code shows an external css inclusion tag declared in Site.Master template.

My question: why did the Asp.net MVC team choose that way rather than using "~/Content/Site.css" ?

Page / Visit Is High Since It Is Content Site

Apr 4, 2011

I have an asp.net web site with 10-25k visitors a day (peaks of over 60k before holidays). Pages/visit is also high, since it's a content site. I have a few specific pages which generate about 60% of the traffic. These pages are a bit complex and are DB heavy (sql server 2008 r2 backend). I was wondering if it's worth "caching" a static version of these pages (I hear this is possible) and only re-render them when something changes (about once in 48hs). Does this sound like a good idea? Where would be the best place to implement this? (asp.net, iis, db) Update: Looks like a good option for me is outputcache with SqlDependency. I see a reference to some kind of SQL server notification for invalidating the cache, but I only see talk of SQL server 2005. Has this option been deprecated by Microsoft? Any new way to handle this?

Visual Studio :: Web Site / Web Application Templates Seem Changed - Default.aspx Only With Site.master

Oct 21, 2010

Using Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. I was used to creating a web app anytime and I would get a default page for starters and be happy. But today I find that when I pick either the ASP.NET Web Site or ASP.NET Web Application templates I get site.master and a bunch of site admin files that I don't want. Alternately when I select the empty versions of those templates, I get almost nothing at all. An almost empty web.config page and no Default.aspx page. There is nothing magical about having a default.aspx page in place, but it is an indicator of a change when I can only get a virtually completely empty website or a website with a bunch of bells and whistles I don't want.

Also, for some reason, when I create a new app or website as just noted, in the Solution Explorer I get aspx.designer.cs files showing as well as web.config files for both debug and release. Somehow some settings and templates must have changed, or am I missing something here? How can I get my settings/templates to go back to the way they were?

How To Create A Content Site Editor

Jan 15, 2010

I'm using ASPMaker to create a content site editor. It analises the database and creates automatically the pages(list, edit and add) for all DB tables. But ASPMaker is limited to customize the resources and design.

I need any easy and fast way to create this content editor in ASP.Net C#. Can someone indicate a software or any easy way to use Visual Studio 2008?

Site Which Allows Users To Update Content

Nov 10, 2010

I am creating an ASP.NET site, based on a single master page which creates the header and footer of the page. On each page there is a content placeholder where I want to allow certain users to manage in order to place their own content. On the site I am replacing, they are using sharepoint designer 2007 to connect to the site and edit the pages visually; now I just want them to edit the contentplaceholders content.

My problem is I can only see the anonymous template in sharepoint designer 2007, where I of course don't have any placeholders. If I could get it to show the loggedin template that would solve my issues, but if that's not possible, is there any other existing tool out there to do this with an ASP.NET site?

My fallback plan is to use the codebehind to fetch from an SQL table; they can create the content area in a WYSIWYG editor, and then I will build a tool for them to insert it to the database, but I don't like it as it complicates the process & I figure there must be an easier way.

Showing Internet Content On An Intranet Site

Feb 23, 2011

I've an ASP.NET application hosted inside a local area network. The application host machine has access to the internet while the local area network clients do not.

There is one requirement where I've to show a web page with rich content (images) in an IFrame from internet (public network) address.

However since internet access is not available on the client, this somehow has to be done from server and then needs to be served to client.

How can this be done?

A firebug of the situation shows that for those dynamic elements, it's trying to re-direct to login to get them Is there anyway around this?

C# - MVC: Correctly Serve Multiple Domain Names From One Site (different Content For Each)?

Mar 31, 2011

Hoping there's been a "best practices" way to accomplish this so far. Basically, I'm building an ASP.NET MVC 3 site that I would like to host from a central database and server. I'd like for [domain1].com and [domain2].com to point back to this one server. Ideally, I'd like this server to see a request from domain 1, and serve content relevant to domain 1 (which is essentially a category of topical information -- the rest of the structure would be the same). I'd like folks not to get redirected away from that domain if possible.I'm thinking I should map each domain to a specific static IP, have all connections through those IPs connect to the central site, and return relevant data that way. What experiences have folks had doing this with the .NET stack, and are there any "best practices" to consider in this case? This might not be as clear as it could be; I'll aim to revise as I get questions.

Can this be done by putting an update panel as the first element of the content pages or having a update panel wrap the content placeholder in the master page?

Security :: Transfer User From One Web Site Site To Another Web Site On A Different Server With User?

Jan 26, 2011

I have a requirement where I have to transfer a user from Web Site 1 on Server A to web Site 2 on Server B.

On Web Site 1, I have to provide controls to enter user id and password and which have to be validated on Web Site 2 on server B, after validating them I have to redirect the user to Web site 2.

what is best way fo doing it. code examples are greatly appreciated.

Note: On Web Site 2, user login functionality is already existing and it is provided by ASP.Net login control, am not sure how to handle the user login process from two different places.

or is it the best way to move Web Site 2 from Server B to Server A so that, the same login controls will be shown using Iframe on Web Site A.

MVC :: Create A Dynamic Field In The Master Page (site.Master)

Oct 10, 2010

I'm starting with ASP.NET MVC (1.0). I have a problem to resolve. I have developed a web applicaton (an application of articles like e-commerce) with a head (logo and menu). I have defined the head (logo and menu) in the Master page (site.master). Now, I must display the number of articles in the head in a field (like the number of articles in the virtual basket in the e-commerce). I can read the number of articles in the data base (in the controller), but i can't integrate it in the master page.

Web Forms :: Master Page (site.Master) File That Now Contains Nothing But Hex Code, Mainly 0's And 1'...

Feb 3, 2011

My computer system froze on me, the mouse froze, cntrl-alt-del, did nothing, so I reset it. Did a disk check, and now everything seems fine except for my master Page html code which I was in the middle of editing when it happened. The VB code-behind file is still ok, the designer file still shows ok with all of the controls in it, but I can't get into desgn or source view. It just opens and gives a whole page of hesixecimal code such as as:

00000030 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

00000040 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

It just gives me a whole page full of numbers like this. I haven't backed up for a few weeks and so I hope I can get this back.

Controlling Site From Master Page?

Mar 25, 2011

I have a web app that contains 1 master page and a bunch of content pages. One of the content pages is "SysLogin.aspx", which is called from a menu option from the Master Page. When the page is called, the user logs in. However, there is a "Login" button. In the code behind of the Login_Click() event, the the user successfully logs in, they are supposed to be redirected to a "Default.aspx" page and the Main Menu is enabled. Problem is, the app hangs on the redirect statement and it goes to the Catch portion of the Try Catch construct. For some reason, when I examine the exception, it only says "Unable to evaluate expression". Below is my code. My question, other than what I've stated is...should your application be controlled using code in the Master Page or in child pages. My code from the "SysLogin.aspx" is below. It hangs on the highlighted line of code.

Private Sub btnLogin_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnLogin.Click
Try
If txtLoginID.Text.Length > 0 Then
If txtPassword.Text.Length > 0 Then
If dbIO.ValidateUser(txtLoginID.Text, txtPassword.Text) Then
Session("LoggedIn") = txtLoginID.Text
Session("loggedInOk") = "Y"
Response.Redirect("~/Admin/Default.aspx")
End If
End If
End If
Catch ex As Exception
Master.errMsg = dbIO.DisplayError("btnLogin_Click()", "SysLogin", ex.Message)
End Try
End Sub

Website - Webforms Physical Site Structure With Dynamic Site Map

Feb 2, 2010

I am having a little difficulty trying to wrap my head around site structures. I have quite a large asp.net site, for which: Admins can see a user list, Each user can have many accounts, and for each account can have many items. I can picture this as a breadcrumb trail of editing a particular item. User List > Mr Bob > Accounts > BOB77 > Items > Item32 > Edit

User List = All the users Mr Bob = A user the administrator has selected from the User List Accounts = A list of the user's accounts 12BOB = The administrator has selected the account named 12BOB Items = A list of the items an account contains Item32 = The item that the administrator selected Edit = The action that the administrator wants to do. I can picture how this would look like if it was using ASP.NET MVC with the URL, but I am unsure how to map this out using Webforms, and in the physical filesystem.

This is what I have thought up about how I am guessing the physical structure would look like. Will this have to use session variables to achieve what I am trying to do?

/Users/User/Edit.aspx <- for editing a user
/Users/User/View.aspx <- for viewing a user
/Users/User/Accounts/Default.aspx <- for viewing all accounts
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/View.aspx <- for viewing an account
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/Edit.aspx <- for editing an account
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/Items/Default.aspx <- for viewing all items in an account
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/Items/Item/Edit.aspx <- for editing an item

Where can I read more about this kind of setup in a web application? Or, can someone point me in the direction of an available project that has this kind of layout?

Visual Studio :: Debug Classic Asp Site That Is Called From Site?

Mar 28, 2011

i have an asp.net website which contains a link to a legacy site written in classic asp which has vb 6 classes (dll) in the back ground also.here is what i am trying to achieve:-i want to browse to the asp.net website using IE7,then when the link is clicked then enters the classic asp site i want to start debugging the classic asp and step through it.(also to make things worse, once a the vb6 class is instanciated, and a call make to its method i want to debug the method in the vb 6 code)My system :- XP Pro, IIS 5, Visual Studio 2005 (asp.net project ), Visual interdev 6 (classic asp project) Visual Basic 6 (vb 6 classes compiled into dll)i have been trying everything with no joy, there is lots on the net but nothing seems to have worked.i have the back office components installed so asp debugging is possible, i have configured the asp website s debugging is turned on.if i add a breakpoint to the classic asp site and hit the start button in visual interdev i can step through it fine.My problem is that if i attach interdev to a process (iexplorer.exe or dll.host) then the breakpoints are not hit. if anyone can help me with this it would be great.ont top of that, if anyone can explain to me how to also debug the vb6 dll code in visual basic 6 when it is called from the classic asp site that would be great!
