Trying To Use AutoMapper For Model With Child Collections, Getting Null Error In .Net MVC 3

Feb 26, 2011

I'm completely new to AutoMapper, and I have a View that looks like this:

@using (Html.BeginForm(null, null, FormMethod.Post, new { enctype = "multipart/form-data" }))
{
@Html.ValidationSummary(true)
<fieldset>
<legend>Consultant</legend> [code]...

This is pretty much the same error I got when trying to use the entity object directly as model, rather than having AutoMapper create a ViewModel. So what am I doing wrong? This is driving me crazy...

UPDATE 3:Well, neverending story... I found some info on using UseDestinationValue on the CreateMap method in AutoMapper. So I tried that, and well, that actually got me a bit further. But...now I get a new exception on SaveChanges() (in the EF model). The exception now is: "The operation failed: The relationship could not be changed because one or more of the foreign-key properties is non-nullable." This appears to be an exception that also occurs when trying to delete child objects in a one-to-many relationship if you don't have cascade delete set, but that's not what I'm trying to do here...

Here's the updated CreateMap methods:Mapper.CreateMap<ConsultantViewModel, Consultant>().ForMember("Id", opts => opts.Ignore()).ForMember(
x => x.Programs, opts => opts.UseDestinationValue());
Mapper.CreateMap<Consultant, ConsultantViewModel>();

how controls (txtbox, radio, etc) are mapped to properties in my Model. Now to the next part : My scenario (example):

Model: three tables: tblPerson, tblPersonOptions, tblOptionsConfig
UI:
Person Name: ______ (required)
Person Age: ________ (required)

radio button: Does Person want to select options? Yes / No ? (required) If yes, then show a checkbox list of options from tblOptionsConfig: (required if yes above). Scenario I tested:

Person Name: Tester User Person Age: Left blank (check if validation error is thrown)
Radion button: Yes. in options check ..let's say 3 out of 5 options. The UpdateModel throws the validation error and the page is returned back to the view(add.aspx).....................

MVC :: View Model To Convert To Domain Model?

May 4, 2010

Say I got a domain model as follows: (and my repository expect an instance of this object)

[Code]....

And a view model (which my views are based on)

[Code]....

At the moment I got it like this and have my controller action manually create a new Person object from the PersonModel object before passing it on to the repository, which does not feel right.

So I tried to have PersonModel inherit from Person and pass that to the repository (also tried casting the PersonModel to a Person object first), but that don't work out.

What's the right way to have PersonModel automatically cast to Person? I want to keep this logic as my current structure allow me to keep things really loosely coupled, with the repository layer not having a clue how it's being used.

C# - In LINQtoSQL, How To Update Child Relationships By Editing The Parent Model

Oct 5, 2010

This is my first attempt at updating a database using LINQtoSQL. At least, it's my first if you don't count the tutorials I've followed. Unfortunately, The tutorials that I have found don't offer much more than updating a single table. I'm attempting to update a DB Model that's a bit more complex.

I have a Stream table:

MVC :: How To Update A Collection Of Objects In A View Model

Sep 14, 2010

I have been trying to design a form, which uses a view model that contains an object array. I want to set up this form so that when the submit button is clicked, all the members of the array are updated. Here is my code:

The class definition of the array element:

[Code]....

The problem is that when I clicked the submit button, none of the luSubject objects in the array Subjects got updated. But if I set up some initial values for the members of the luSubject objects, for instance, set the Name field to be "Maths" in the constructor of luSubject class, then it got displayed on the text box when the form page was loaded. This suggests that this form could display the data in the array, but cannot update it.

C# - Is It Possible To Map Multiple DTO Objects To A Single ViewModel Using Automapper

Jan 24, 2010

I was wondering if it is possible to map multiple DTO objects to a single ViewModel object using Automapper?

Essentially, I have multiple DTO objects and would like to display information from each on a single screen in ASP.NET MVC 2.0. To do so I would like to flatten the DTO objects (or parts of them...) into the Viewmodel and pass said viewmodel to the view. If I had one DTO this would be easy, but I've never seen it being done with multiple. Obviously there are a number of roundabout ways to do this (outside of automapper), but this is the approach that I would like to take if possible.

Conditionally Show Model Objects In View Depending On Dropdownlist Value

Mar 24, 2011

Using ASP.NET MVC 2, I have a model for a view. The view has a dropdownlist of roles that is populated by the model and there is a list below that of checkboxes with a number of privileges. I want to show only specific privileges depending on the dropdownlist selected roleID and have it update the privileges everytime the dropdownlist changes. I know how to do this in web forms ASP.net with absolutely no problem but I cannot seem to figure out where to start in ASP.NET MVC. Can someone please advise me what I need to do or towards a tutorial that will show me what to do? I am a novice in MVC.

MVC :: Create A Parent-child Data Entry View?

Dec 8, 2010

I've been required to create an entry form to capture details relating to a travel booking. A user should be able to make a booking entering details related to the booking specifically the details of the persons that would be making the trip. This would involve a sort of parent-children relationship between the booking and the persons.

This would be relatively easy for me to achieve using web forms but then how can I easily achieve this is MVC using a single view? Do I have to create a sort of multistep form?

VS 2010 Populate Child Node When Parent Node Is Selected

Oct 16, 2012

I'm populating a treeview dynamically. On OnTreeNodePopulate I call a sub and populate the Parent nodes. I do not want to populate the child nodes at this time. Upto this point it works fine.

Now I would like the user to click the parent node and then populate the child node. I tried to use TreeNodeExpanded, but that is called for each parent node, so that didn't work.

5 Cascading Dropdowns (Parent To Child And Child To Parent)?

Aug 26, 2010

Simple and blunt: my cascading dropdownlists clear when a postback occurs. Does anyone know a quick way around that?For more information, read on...

I have 5 dropdown lists that define a training class location and line of business: Site, Parent Client, Client, Program, Project I'm trying to build cascading dropdownlists that can work from any direction (i.e. select a site and all other lists are filtered by site...select a project and all other dropdown lists are filtered by project). I've built the SQL Select statement behind the lists that filters (accurately).

Forms Data Controls :: Binding A Repeater To A List Of Objects That Have Child Objects?

Nov 17, 2010

have some Objects, lets say Employee and Role defined as below and I have defined relationships in my database that gives me a list of objects say employees and thanks to my framework each employee object also has a Role object linked via the RoleIDID, UserName, Password, Email, RoleIDRoleID, RoleNameSo in code I can do something like this

Employee emp = dataService_GetEmployeeByID(1);
string RoleName = emp.Role.RoleName;

Now here is my problemI can bind any object in a repeater and it works fine for the first level in my relationship

For instance <%# Eval("UserName") %>

But I need to be able to show the details for my child objects as well (Role) so something like this (which does not work)

<%# Eval("Role.RoleName") %>

MVC :: Store Model In Separate Class Library- Pass Model Objects?

May 19, 2010

I'm building an MVC 2 RTM app, and I want to be able to share my model across applications. I'd *like* to be able to implement it like:ASP.NET MVC2 app (holds Views and Controllers)Class library to hold Model(s)WCF app to handle the data transactions with the models via different data stores across apps I had the MVC app working fine, but I wanted to abstract the data stuff and be able to work with the model across apps through the WCF site, so I created a class library project and moved all of the Models classes into that and set-up a WCF app, then added project references to the MVC and WCF apps that point at the class library. The idea was I can create services that take and return objects from the model via method calls across apps. It appears that everything's wired up correctly in the MVC project, so I'm passing the objects stored in the Models class library between controllers and views and everythig is compiling just fine, but for some reason the data is not being passed back from the views to the controller on POST -- all of the properties in the classes are null or empty.

When I debug the app, I can see that the values are stored in the model data dictionary but not the model object itself. What am I doing wrong? Am I on the wrong path, or missing something obvious (to some)?

Web Forms :: Parent-child Web Form: How To Close Dialog Box And Return Values To Parent Form?

Jan 24, 2010

In my website I have two forms: parent form and child form(dialog box). Their expected behaviour is like this: if clicked on 'show' button on parent form, a dialog form opens that displays a gridview. In dialog form, if clicked on 'select' button it closes
itself and returns value in selected row back to parent form.

To achieve this I write following code (.cs) : in parent form:

void ShowBtn_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

{

StringBuilder jScript = new StringBuilder(); [code]....

Now problem is: the code in parent .cs works fine, it opens the dialog properly. But when clicked on 'select', instead of returning back to parent, it opens the same dialog again in new window. This newly open window says "Done but error on page" at left bottom.

Best Way To Implement Multilingual Domain Objects Using NHibernate?

May 19, 2010

What is the best way to design the Domain objects which can have multi-lingual fields. An example can be a Product class with Description being multi-lingual.

I have found few links but could not decide which one is the best way.

http://fabiomaulo.blogspot.com/2009/06/localized-property-with-nhibernate.html
(This stores all localised language data in one field. Can be a problem if we query from Sql)
http://ayende.com/Blog/archive/2006/12/26/LocalizingNHibernateContextualParameters.aspx
(This one has a warning at the beginning that it is a hack and no longer supported)
http://www.webdevbros.net/2009/06/24/create-a-multi-languaged-domain-model-with-nhibernate-and-c/
(This does not describe how multilingual data will be structured in the database.)

Anyone having experience with using NHibernate with multi-lingual data.

C# - How To Inject To All Child Objects Automatically

Jun 30, 2010

Consider this abstract class

public abstract class Foo
{
public Injectable Prop {get;set;}
}

i have an application that i want to enhance and simultaneously refactor for simplicity.

I have over 100 classes that call some same stuff (e.g Class Injectable) and i am thinking that this behaviour can be abstracted and set to a base class, and everybody will inherit from this base class so as to remove copy/paste code.

However, i want to avoid copy/paste code in the spring configuration file by defining an Injectable object and then define a child object foreach and every class that inherits from Foo.

I am looking for a way to set the abstract class's properties and then all child elements to automatically get them via configuration. I want to avoid to make the abstract class like this:
