.net - WebPermission Exception Even Though In Full Trust?

Jan 16, 2010

I'm trying to do what I thought was a simple HttpWebRequest (the code is deep inside a dll so I can't give a small code snippet, but it should be relatively simple), but I'm getting a security exception:

System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Net.WebPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

I've checked and everything is running with Full trust, and have tried setting this in the web.config. But I've no idea what could be creating the error.

Full Trust Doesn't Seem To Work With WebMatrix Web.config File?

Mar 30, 2011

I've been told by my host that I need to enable FullTrust in my webmatrix website because I keep getting an error. (BUT, I have used a different host, and everything on my site works perfectly with them without modification). Anyway, I used the code my host suppllies in their KB, but that just generates a different error. So I looked up full trust on google and used about 5 different code samples to enable full trust but they all generate errors! even the ones on MSDN. And googling "Full Trust WebMatrix" doesn't really bring anything helpful either.

How can I successfully add full trust to a web.config file that is made using WebMatrix?

Is It Possible To Prevent File Access Outside The Website Folder While Keeping Full Trust

Jan 4, 2011

Setting the .Net trust level to Medium on a site will ensure that no code can access files outside the application directory.

I have an ASP.Net site that must run in Full Trust. I have configured my website in IIS to use its own Application Pool Identity [URL].

Currently it is possible for scripts/code in this app to read files outside of the application directory. This occurs because by default, accounts that are a member of the BUILTINusers group are able to read most files on the system, including c: and c:windows. It appears that Applicaion Pool Identity accounts are also members of BUILTINusers.

Is it possible to prevent file access outside the website folder while keeping Full Trust?

Security Exception Over Reading/writing Files On Medium Trust?

Nov 21, 2010

I'm working on a project in ASP.Net, and it requires reading/writing to files on my server. I'm hosted at GoDaddy, and they swear they've got me at Medium Trust. When I try to read or write files that are in my own domain, I get Security Exceptions. I've tried multiple ways of opening/saving the files and they all return security errors. Here's the most recent error and offending line of code (I didn't save them all, they're all pretty much the same thing):

Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.MediaPermission, WindowsBase, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' failed.

PngBitmapEncoder pbe = new PngBitmapEncoder();
pbe.Frames.Add(BitmapFrame.Create(new Uri("ornament.png", UriKind.Relative))); <-- Error

I've also gotten the error when trying to read/write using FileStream, Bitmap.Save and new Bitmap("ornament.png"). Could there be a problem with my Web.config? Is read/write supposed to be blocked by medium trust? This is a time-sensitive project and this is a brick wall for me. The deadline is end of business day tomorrow and GoDaddy isn't responding.

Configuration :: How To Give Full Trust To Activex Control By Programmaticallytrust To Activex

Jul 30, 2010

Currently I have written the Activex Control for RFID USB reader and calling that one in ASP.NET web application. The Activex Control is working fine when I will give the full trust permission for particular IIS URL in

1. Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > .NET Framework 2.0 Configuration

2. Expand Runtime Security Policy > Machine > Code Groups > All_Code

3. Right Click All_Code and click New...

4. Create a new code group, I named mine MyProject_FullTrust_Zone

5. Choose the URL condition type and specify the path on the network where the apps will be deployed.

6. Choose Use Existing permission set, and set it to Full Trust.

Alternative way of giving permission for an Activex Control is

1. Open Visual Studio Command Prompt

2. Run the command caspol -machine -addgroup 1. -site <ip address> FullTrust Doing this it works fine.

Whenever my web site will open, it will ask the user to give permission for the Activex Control using Allow or Cancel Button in browser. This type of functionality I have seen some web site which takes input from the user to allow the ActiveX Control.

Architecture :: How To Log Dal Exception And Showing Alert To User / Exception Occurs

Aug 3, 2010

I am working on a 3-tier asp.net application. Currently I'm stuck up in a situation where I need to handle a specific type of exception (User Defined) in DAL and Show alert to the user if that exception occurs in DAL.

I tried following things:

1) I raised that exception from the DAL and catch it in BLL and throw a new BLL exception to for that DAL exception and finally catch it in the UI layer to show the alert to the user. I've successfully implement this in my project. But there are some issues in this approach. First of all I feel this is not right way to do this as it may lead to performance related issues. Secondly, the application contains more than 500 pages and classes. so I need to attach additional catch block in every method to catch the BLL exception. which is the last option i'd like to take.

2) in second approach I logged the the DAL exception into a text file. but problem in this approach is that how could the UI layer know that exception has occurred and show the alert to the user. Is there any event in asp.net where i could handle all this activities?

my question is what is the best approach to handle this type of situation? Will Exception handling block help me in this?

I've tried reading many articles on this but i couldn't get an answer for my question? I might not be using right keywords for my search.

C# - Exception Handling - Implement Custom Exception Classes?

Jul 2, 2010

i have this application structure:

1. Presentation Layer which calls

2. Business Logic Layer which in turn calls

3. Data Access Layer to do the dealing with the database.

Now i have a Contacts page from where i can add a new contact to the database.So to add a New Contact i fill in all the required details and then call a Add Method (residing in the BLL) from the page, which in turn call a Add Method residing in the DAL.this method in the DAL returns the Current Identity of the record which is then return back to the BLL method and finally delivered on the page.this is fine. but what if a get an exception how do i handle it properly because the method in DAL has a return type of int and i dont want to throw another error!! coz other wise i will have to write try catch in almost all the methods.

//something like this
public int AddMethod(ContactClass contactObj)
{
int result = 0;[code]...

rather i want to show the user a user-friendly message which they can easily understand and in the mean while i will send a mail to myself documenting the Error that just occurred.how can i implement my custom exception classes.

C# - Can GhostScript Run In Medium Trust

Apr 23, 2010

I am using GhostScript to generate some thumbnails of PDF pages in an ASP.NET application. I have it wrapped in this library called GhostScriptSharp that just uses DllImport to call methods in the GhostScript DLL.It looks like this wont work on a medium trust hosting environment, either because of the fact that it is calling unmanaged code, or that it looks like the library is creating files all over the place (outside my virtual directory). I ran Process Monitor and saw it trying to Read, QueryNameInformationFile, CreateFile and QueryStandardInformationFile in places like:

C:WINDOWSsystem32HalftoneDefault
or
C:gsgs8.63libHalftoneDefault
or
C:gsfontHalftoneDefault

Any ideas about whether this is "fixable" to run in medium trust? If I can't use GhostScript, is there another free/open source library that WILL work in Medium trust?

MySQL Run Under Medium Trust?

Jan 22, 2010

I am trying to get a simple prototype using ASP.NET S#arp-architecture (Sharp architecture) to run on a shared hosting site. This site runs in medium trust, which appears to give problems with this framework. At first I went off on a wild goose chase with the mySQL.data.dll, but the latest version already supports partially trusted callers. The only way I found up until now is this blogpost, which basically describes re-compiling everything from the ground up, starting with the various Castle components. Is this the only way to get this to work, and more importantly, does this actually work?

I have had some good experiences with S#arp-architecture, and since I only have a few days to build this prototype, I figured S#arp-architecture would be a good match. So, my options are to stick with SA, or on the other end of the spectrum to hand-roll an MVC/NH/mySQL application.
