Full Trust Doesn't Seem To Work With WebMatrix Web.config File?

Mar 30, 2011

I've been told by my host that I need to enable FullTrust in my webmatrix website because I keep getting an error. (BUT, I have used a different host, and everything on my site works perfectly with them without modification). Anyway, I used the code my host suppllies in their KB, but that just generates a different error. So I looked up full trust on google and used about 5 different code samples to enable full trust but they all generate errors! even the ones on MSDN. And googling "Full Trust WebMatrix" doesn't really bring anything helpful either.

How can I successfully add full trust to a web.config file that is made using WebMatrix?

Is It Possible To Prevent File Access Outside The Website Folder While Keeping Full Trust

Jan 4, 2011

Setting the .Net trust level to Medium on a site will ensure that no code can access files outside the application directory.

I have an ASP.Net site that must run in Full Trust. I have configured my website in IIS to use its own Application Pool Identity [URL].

Currently it is possible for scripts/code in this app to read files outside of the application directory. This occurs because by default, accounts that are a member of the BUILTINusers group are able to read most files on the system, including c: and c:windows. It appears that Applicaion Pool Identity accounts are also members of BUILTINusers.

Is it possible to prevent file access outside the website folder while keeping Full Trust?

Escape Character & Doesn't Work For Impersonation Tag In Web.config

Jun 23, 2010

I hope someone has a good answer to this stupid question I have. I'm trying to use impersonation in my asp.net 3.5 application within the web.config file to connect to my sql server 2008 database so I use:

When I run my app, I get this:

Configuration Error

Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.

Parser Error Message: Could not create Windows user token from the credentials specified in the config file. Error from the operating system 'Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Source Error:

impersonate="true" userName="testUser" password="test(ampersand sign, this forum actually does render it properly)amp;test" />

So basically it posts the password with the actual escape for ampersand rather than the actual ampersand. This leads me to believe it's processing it as a literal but validating it as xml, unfortunately I can't just use "test&test" in the web.config file because visual studio just won't compile it since it's marked as an error.

.net - WebPermission Exception Even Though In Full Trust?

Jan 16, 2010

I'm trying to do what I thought was a simple HttpWebRequest (the code is deep inside a dll so I can't give a small code snippet, but it should be relatively simple), but I'm getting a security exception:

System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Net.WebPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

I've checked and everything is running with Full trust, and have tried setting this in the web.config. But I've no idea what could be creating the error.

Due to requirements, I need to open a popup window (javascript window.open(url)) and the url value is an aspx page that downloads a file.

I've tried numerous variations of this code: writing to buffer, Response.WriteFile(), Response.End(), etc...

Nothing works.

All the page does is pop up for about a second and then disappears. I can step thru the code in debugger, but the file never gets downloaded.

I've seen several other posts about this in various places, but no definitive answer.

I am using IIS7 Windows 2008 server.

MVC Dynamic Stylesheets - Parse As Separate File When It Doesn't Work

Aug 24, 2010

The project I'm working on allows an end-user to modify CSS code to integrate the application as best possible. Most of the CSS values are stored in a database and need to be retrieved and parsed dynamically. I setup a Style controller, and gave each stylesheet an action, and then passed the configuration data through to the View. I set the ContentType to "text/css" and then generated the stylesheets. This works fine, but the problem I'm running into is this: none of the code works in the application. I include it in the head code, but it doesn't parse in the code. An example of what I do is this:

<%@ Page Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<dynamic>" ContentType="text/css" %>
.element {
background-color: <%= ViewData.Model.BackgroundColor %>;
}

I include it like so:

<link href="/style/Basic" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="all" />

When I include the CSS code in a partial view and include it using the ViewModel (wrapped in style tags) in an action, then everything works fine. It is when I try to parse this as a separate file when it does not work. Is there something I am doing incorrectly? Or is there some kind of glitch?

Configuration :: How To Give Full Trust To Activex Control By Programmaticallytrust To Activex

Jul 30, 2010

Currently I have written the Activex Control for RFID USB reader and calling that one in ASP.NET web application. The Activex Control is working fine when I will give the full trust permission for particular IIS URL in

1. Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > .NET Framework 2.0 Configuration

2. Expand Runtime Security Policy > Machine > Code Groups > All_Code

3. Right Click All_Code and click New...

4. Create a new code group, I named mine MyProject_FullTrust_Zone

5. Choose the URL condition type and specify the path on the network where the apps will be deployed.

6. Choose Use Existing permission set, and set it to Full Trust.

Alternative way of giving permission for an Activex Control is

1. Open Visual Studio Command Prompt

2. Run the command caspol -machine -addgroup 1. -site <ip address> FullTrust Doing this it works fine.

Whenever my web site will open, it will ask the user to give permission for the Activex Control using Allow or Cancel Button in browser. This type of functionality I have seen some web site which takes input from the user to allow the ActiveX Control.

NInject Work In Medium Trust Hosting?

Apr 11, 2010

I'm doing shared hosting with GoDaddy and I developed a sample ASP.NET MVC app using Castle Windsor and unfortunately, it didn't work in a medium trust setting. Specifically, I got this error: "[SecurityException: That assembly does not allow partially trusted callers"... etc. GoDaddy is sadly not flexible in their trust policy.

I'm not tied to Windsor and would like to try another one that will work under Medium Trust. I'd actually like to use NInject, but I've read people having mixed success. The only one I've read that works with no problem is Microsoft's Unity.My question is, does NInject work in medium trust? If not, what are my options?

Visual Studio :: Intellisense For XML Files - Web.config File And The Editor Doesn't Highlight The Closing Or Opening Tag

Feb 3, 2010

I know I've seen this in one of the video tutorials but I have no idea which one and I have reinstalled VS since then. I think it was Chris Pels that showed how to set up VS so that you had IntelliSense for XML files. The reason I ask is because I'm going through the Security tutorials series and working on the web.config file and the editor doesn't highlight the closing or opening tag when you click on one or the other like it does for HTML or C#.

Not sure if I'm explaining this clearly or not. When working with HTML or C# I can click on the opening tag for an element, say a div tag and VS will bold the type of the closing div tag. This makes it easy to be sure that I'm not messing up my tags. Well this doesn't happen with an XML document. I saw in one of the videos where the author configured the settings in VS so that IntelliSense would work in an XML document. I just don't remember the path to those settings or what changes were made.

Reading System.net / MailSettings / Smtp From Web.config In Medium Trust Environment?

Jan 5, 2011

I have some inherited code which stores SMTP server, username, password in the system.net/mailSettings/smtp section of the Web.config.

It used to read them like so:

Configuration c = WebConfigurationManager.OpenWebConfiguration(HttpContext.Current.Request.ApplicationPath);
MailSettingsSectionGroup settings = (MailSettingsSectionGroup)c.GetSectionGroup("system.net/mailSettings");
return settings.Smtp.Network.Host;

But this was failing when I had to deploy to a medium trust environment. So following the answer from this question, I rewrote it to use GetSection() like so:

SmtpSection settings = (SmtpSection)ConfigurationManager.GetSection("system.net/mailSettings/smtp"); return settings.Network.Host;

But it's still giving me a SecurityException on Medium trust, with the following message:

C# - Setting Trust Level To High In Web.config Makes Application Run Slower?

Jan 11, 2011

We had a UAT and Production version of a .NET web application. UAT was taking around 5 seconds to run a particular operation while Prod was taking 35+ seconds.

This even happened when pointing both web applications at the same database and putting them both on the same machine.

The culprit was finally found to be the following entry, which was in the Prod but not UAT web.config

<trust level="High" originUrl="" />

why this would cause such a significant performance degradation??

Web Forms :: User Control (.ascx) File - Maxlength Doesn't Work For Multiline Textboxe

Jul 30, 2010

I have a form in aASP User Control (.ascx) file. Maxlength does not work for the multiline textboxe hence it is generated as a textarea, which has no support for this attribute. I could maybe use some asp validation, to prevent submission of too much text, but I want to prevent it to be possible to even enter too many characters, just like is possible for single line textboxes... I don't know if the control has any onload event that I could use to add attributes to the textbox from code behind and and combined with javascript fix this or anything..
