ADO.NET :: Change Connection String Of Linq To Sql Entities?
Sep 9, 2010
I have a solution which uses Linq to SQL Data Classes to acced the db. I have a project for my domain objects in my solution, which is a class library and has the dbml file. When I set up the dmbl using the wizard, Visual Studio created anapp.config file on that project with the connection string. It also creatting asettings file with the same info. I've noticed that if I change the connection string in the settings file, the app.config gets updated, which is the expected behaviour.
However, I'm having a problem when I deploy my web site to the production server. I already set the app.config file's Build Action to "Content", and also set Copy to ouput directory to "Always". Nevertheless, when I install the web site and change the connection string in the app.config file, it still takes the old connection string, so obviously I get an error. I've found that it only works if I change it with in Visual Studio and then compile, but of course that's not an optimal solution, because any change in the production db server would mean I have to change my project's assembly, thus generating a new version.
What do I have to configure so that the assembly takes the connection string form my app.config file directly after I deploy?
I am using Entity Framework to contact my data base. as part of my web code I am using Linq to entities, and I want to determine the number of elements in an anonymous type list. I can't get it to work, I get the exception: "LINQ to Entities does not recognize the method 'Int32 Parse(System.String)' method, and this method cannot be translated into a store expression."
var questItem = from chapters in context.TestChapter from questions in context.Question where chapters.ID == int.Parse(Request.QueryString["id"]) where questions.TestChapterID == chapters.ID select questions.ID; int numOfSteps = questItem.Count();
I have a entity data model generated from a database schema. Now that database is no more physically available, I want to generate a new database with the same schema model. I'm able to generate the tables from the script that the Entity Frame work generates for me.
I have two problems. I'm not able to generate the stored procedures from EDM. Second, I'm not able to change the connection string to the new database. Do I have to re-generate the edm from the new database that I'm trying to create?
I'm running into a really annoying problem with my Linq to SQL project. When I add everything in under the web project everything goes as expected and I can tell it to use my existing connection string stored in the web.config file and the Linq code pulls directly from the ConfigurationManager.
This all turns ugly once I move the code into its own project. I've created an app.config file, put the connection string in there as it was in the web.config but when I try to add another table in the IDE keeps forcing me to either hardcode the connection string or creates a Settings file and puts it in there, which then adds a new entry into the app.config file with a new name.
Is there a way keep my Linq code in its own project yet still refer back to my config file without the IDE continuously hardcoding the connection string or creating the Settings file? I'm converting part of my DAL over to use Linq to SQL so I'd like to use the existing connection string that our old code is using as well as keep the value in a common location, and one spot, instead of in a number of spots.
Manually changing the mode to WebSettings instead of AppSettings works untill I try to add a new table, then it goes back to hardcoding the value or recreating the Settings file. I also tried to switch the project type to be a web project and then rename my app.config to web.config and then everything works as I'd like it to. I'm just not sure if there are any downfalls to keeping this as a web project since it really isn't one. The project only contains the Linq to SQL code and an implementation of my repository classes.
My project layout looks like this
[code]....
Every time I try to make the default constructor look like the first way, it always auto changes back to the second way once I make a change to the file unless the DBML is inside of a web project.
I am using LINQ to SQL files in my class libray since every LINQ to SQL sources file is a seprate file and i have to set database connection string in each class library. Now, i have total 7 class libraires in my project how connection string be passed from web.onfg to LINQ file, so that i don't need to manually change the connection string. lke we did in asp.net 2.0 using connection string property in class file library.
How could we pass the same in LINQ's designer file.
i have create users and rolls and all thing work very good on my computer but after upload view exception
Code:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) how can i change connection string for mdf database
Up until now I only needed one connection string since I had only one database but this has changed since I want some users to connect to database A and others to database B What would be the correct way to go about it?
How can I make the code string connStr = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings "staceys_cakesConnectionString"].ConnectionString;
work generically and not need the staceys_cakesConnectionString? Or how can I set it somewhere else so I only have to change it one place when I change it?
using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.Data; using System.Data.SqlClient; using System.Configuration;
i have 2 ASP pages in first page the user choose the database name and in other page take the database name and change the connection string to other databasehow i can pass a variable from one page to other by button click and how i receive this variable in other page and how to change the connection stringthe connection string is in web.config like this:
Does anyone has an idea on how to change the connection string of the webparts at runtime. i have a multitenant app, and would like to store each accounts users settings in their respective DB's i tried changing the connstring in the webpartsmanager init, and the page load event
Dim myConfiguration As System.Configuration.Configuration = System.Web.Configuration.WebConfigurationManager.OpenWebConfiguration("~")
I developed MVC application. Then successfully import my local database which was stored in App_Data folder to the hosting provider (thanks ScottGu). But now I don't realize how can I painlessly change my Entity models which was using local database in order they use database which was imported.Here is some of the connection strings
i have a code which has the connection string as driver. dim s as string = "Driver={SQL Server}; Server=xxxSQLEXPRESS; Database=dbRegister; Trusted_Connection=yes"
I have serveral databases with same tables. I created a crystal report to show the report for respective logins from the database. I have a problem in it. In crystal report when i changing the database it should not change the respective table. It loads only the table what we give in the connection string first time.
I am trying to change the connection string for the registration form in VS 2010.
This is because it links to the local database in the App_Data which I need it to link to another database. I have changed the connection string in the webconig file and this works file for other forms I have created but does not allow me to create new users.
I have used the ASP.net 4.0 template when creating this website.
I will explain the my current yet simple architecture of my application(s). At the moment I have my main web application as a separate project. I then reference the CoreBLLDAL (Business Logic and Data Access) Project so that several projects can have access to the BLL/DAL Project.
Within the CoreBLLDLL Project I use TableAdapters for my DAL.
I have just upgraded to VS2010 and I would like to make use of the Config Transforms, allowing me to have a separate web.config for test and production - however, TableAdapter get the connection string from the Settings.settings file.
How can I change the TableAdapters to get the connection string from the app/web.config file? I read that you can change this within the designer file for the TableAdapters by using ConfigurationManager, however, I tried this but I do not have access to the ConfigurationManager namespace. I presume this is because the project is a class library and not a web application - I am not too sure.
I have a db connection string 'ApplicationServices' defined in the connectionString section of web.config and 3 Entity Framework connection strings which have the provider connection string attribute with the same connection string as the one in 'ApplicationServices'. Is there a way to reference connectionString in 'ApplicationServices' for the provider connection string attribute of the EF connection string in the web.config, rather than providing the connection string all over again?
I've noticed that VS2008 removes the "none" option in the properties -> connection dropdownlist after you have modified a LinqToSql class where the "none" option was previously specified.So if i create a LinqToSql class, drag some db tables in, then set the connection to "none" in the properties window, save, then make a change to the db tables i've dragged into the class, i can't get it to go back to "none" again.I've noticed this behavior sporadically, not all the time. Havent isolated when it happens yet.The none option is required if you want to save your connection string in the web.config, and not in the designer.cs class or the .dbml file.
How to use Stored Procedures with Linq to Entities? I prefer an example with input and output The videos on asp.net only show how to do this with Linq to SQL.
SELECT * FROM MessageAlerts AS A LEFT OUTER JOIN Contacts AS C ON A.ContactId = C.Id LEFT OUTER JOIN Users AS U ON A.UserId = U.Id INNER JOIN Businesses AS B ON B.Id = C.BusinessId OR B.UserId = U.Id
how to do this : ON B.Id = C.BusinessId OR B.UserId = U.Id with linq in entity framework.
WHY are all the examples on this site linq to SQL? Did ms not themselves announce dropping support for l2SQL over a year ago? i really don't get it. Examples are great.. but really not helping me since i've gone ahead and listened to MS. And can someone at MS clarify what the position is for linq 2 SQL.. Is it supported? Recommended? What the hell.
I am trying to learn LINQ to entities, and am working out how to best structure my BLL layer. I have generated the entity model and have created a generic repository in my DAL that returns results as IList<T>. I initially created the BLL to also return
results as IList<T>:
public IList<DAL.Customer> SelectAll() { [code]...
Now I am working on the aspx page, and I can create an ObjectDataSource and configure it to use my BLL, but since I am returning IList, I can't sort since I am not using a DataView. I have seen some articles on the web for converting IList to DataView, but that seems like a lot of overhead for every query.My goal is to keep a clean separation between layers without making things overly complicated. I would like to know how others have done this, or maybe a link to a good tutorial that shows how to structure all three layers.
I am building a web application in asp.Net 4.0 and entity framework. I am trying to retrieve a list of products based on a collection of id's. I first gather all the id's in a collection and then pass it to the linq query. I am trying to get a functionality similar to the IN clause in SQL. The problem seems to be with the Contains() method in the Linq to entities query. Here is my Linq code:
[Code]....
I got the above Linq to entities method from here: [URL]
I have a message table that self joins to itself where Message.ID == Message.Parent. So I have 1 Message with several ChildMessages. This is set up nicely with a Navigation property.
The code is currently:
var message = from m in soe.Messages.Include("ChildMessages") where m.ID == id && m.IsActive select m; return message.FirstOrDefault();
What I really want is to only return 1 Message (that is equal to a particular ID and isActive) with all of its Active ChildMessages and I want to do it in one call to the database.
