Visual Studio :: Linq To Sql Won't Let Me Select Connection String "None" Option?

May 19, 2010

I've noticed that VS2008 removes the "none" option in the properties -> connection dropdownlist after you have modified a LinqToSql class where the "none" option was previously specified. So if i create a LinqToSql class, drag some db tables in, then set the connection to "none" in the properties window, save, then make a change to the db tables i've dragged into the class, i can't get it to go back to "none" again.I've noticed this behavior sporadically, not all the time. Havent isolated when it happens yet.The none option is required if you want to save your connection string in the web.config, and not in the designer.cs class or the .dbml file.

Visual Studio :: DataContext And Connection String Changes

Jan 8, 2010

I am using LINQ to SQL in a project. I create a new DataContext class (a "DBML").

This is a DotNetNuke portal, module project. DNN has a standard connection string named "SiteSQLServer." Of course, I want my DataContext class to use this same connection string.

In Server Explorer in Visual Studio, I have a connection to the development database. Of course, that connection knows nothing of the "SiteSQLServer" connection string in web.config.

When I drag a table into the DBML design screen, I get a popup message that the table I'm dragging in is from a different connection, and is it OK if it changes the connection string? If I say "No," then the table never comes in to the designer. If I say "OK," then Visual Studio adds a new connection string to my web.config file. Then I must click in the open area of the designer, then go to the Properties window and reset the connection string. If I miss this, then in testing everything works. But when I deploy to a production server, the connection fails. But even if I do not miss this, that extra connection string remains in my web.config file.

Is there a way to get Visual Studio to drop the table into the designer, and leave web.config alone?

Visual Studio :: Create Connection String To Perform Test With Text Book?

Sep 14, 2010

I have installed VS 2010 Ultimate and it came with SQL 2008. what version it is and also how to create a connection in place to keep using the Oreilly examples to hopefully learn how to develop in C#. I have been learning but it is getting more difficult. I try to follow the steps but it just does not make sense. provide some easy steps to check version and connection method to sql using 2010,

I did see a post for sql management(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx FamilyID=08e52ac2-1d62-45f6-9a4a-4b76a8564a2b&displaylang=en). I am going to download to hopefully be able to view the database. We have sql server 2008 at work and I have used the studio management for sql to run queries and would like to do the same with the version that was installed with the installation of 2010 ultimate. I can get the connection to the database so I can start learning how to build a dictionary and list for some queries. My goal is to create a aspx file that will show entries in a database we have at work.

'Add Config Transforms' And One Click Publish Option Not Working When Upgraded From Visual Studio 2005 To Visual Studio 2010

Jul 28, 2010

I just recently upgrade my asp.net web project from visual studio 2005 to visual studio 2010. The upgrade was successful with no problems however im missing some features with this project. The One Click Publish feature(which is greyed out) in the header area of Visual Studio 2010 and the Add Config Transforms feature which is no where to be seen when you right click on web.config. When i create a new web project straight from visual studio 2010, these options work fine.

DataSource Controls :: Connecting To SQL Server In Visual Studio 2008 Using Code - Error: 25 - Connection String Is Not Valid

Feb 2, 2010

Background: I use SQL server 2005 developer edition and visual studio 2008. Visual studio 2008 is running on a local machine with Vista business edition. SQL server is running on a remote server using Windows server 2003. Both computers are within the same domain.

Problem: First, I used the server explorer to connect to the SQL server. Everything works as desired. Then I write code to do the same thing. I keep getting the following error message:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid)

However, I used the exactly identical connection string as the one used in the server explorer. So connection string should not be the problem. In addition, I tried the test code in MSDN, which tells whether my domainusername can flow the network. It turns out the user name is fine. I also went to the SQL server management studio and found the login for my computer is NVCWeihao while my computer login name is NVCweihao. I am wondering if this uppercase letter really affects the connection.

Visual Studio :: Web Test Option Missing - Need To Reinstall?

Sep 15, 2010

I initially installed Visual Studio 2008 Developer edition. I then installed Visual Studio 2008 Suite edition, with 2008 Developer edition still on the PC. When attempting to create a new Web Test, this option is not available to select when adding a new test in the solution.

The steps I followed:
1) Create new Project: Test Project
2) Add "New Test"
3) At this point I would expect "Web Test" to be an option, I only have Ordered Test, Unit Test, and Unit Test Wizard.

Do I need to uninstall Visual Studio 2008 and start with a clean Visual Studio 2008 Suite to get the "Web Test" option to show?

ADO.NET :: Change Connection String Of Linq To Sql Entities?

Sep 9, 2010

I have a solution which uses Linq to SQL Data Classes to acced the db. I have a project for my domain objects in my solution, which is a class library and has the dbml file. When I set up the dmbl using the wizard, Visual Studio created anapp.config file on that project with the connection string. It also creatting asettings file with the same info. I've noticed that if I change the connection string in the settings file, the app.config gets updated, which is the expected behaviour.

However, I'm having a problem when I deploy my web site to the production server. I already set the app.config file's Build Action to "Content", and also set Copy to ouput directory to "Always". Nevertheless, when I install the web site and change the connection string in the app.config file, it still takes the old connection string, so obviously I get an error. I've found that it only works if I change it with in Visual Studio and then compile, but of course that's not an optimal solution, because any change in the production db server would mean I have to change my project's assembly, thus generating a new version.

What do I have to configure so that the assembly takes the connection string form my app.config file directly after I deploy?

Configuration :: Dynamically Select A Connection String In Web.config?

Jul 15, 2010

I have three connection strings in my web config file one for developement db, test db, and production db.

Currently I have all three defined and using the same name and I comment out the connection out the

inappropriate strings.

So in my code I use the connection string like so:

WebConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings(
"A_DevConnectionString").ConnectionString

and in my Web.config I have three conn strings :

a_devConnectinoString
a_testConnectionString
a_prodConnectionString.

Can the connectionstring be selected dynamically through the web.config ?

C# - How To Load An Existing Connection String For Linq To SQL From An App.config File

May 25, 2010

I'm running into a really annoying problem with my Linq to SQL project. When I add everything in under the web project everything goes as expected and I can tell it to use my existing connection string stored in the web.config file and the Linq code pulls directly from the ConfigurationManager.

This all turns ugly once I move the code into its own project. I've created an app.config file, put the connection string in there as it was in the web.config but when I try to add another table in the IDE keeps forcing me to either hardcode the connection string or creates a Settings file and puts it in there, which then adds a new entry into the app.config file with a new name.

Is there a way keep my Linq code in its own project yet still refer back to my config file without the IDE continuously hardcoding the connection string or creating the Settings file? I'm converting part of my DAL over to use Linq to SQL so I'd like to use the existing connection string that our old code is using as well as keep the value in a common location, and one spot, instead of in a number of spots.

Manually changing the mode to WebSettings instead of AppSettings works untill I try to add a new table, then it goes back to hardcoding the value or recreating the Settings file. I also tried to switch the project type to be a web project and then rename my app.config to web.config and then everything works as I'd like it to. I'm just not sure if there are any downfalls to keeping this as a web project since it really isn't one. The project only contains the Linq to SQL code and an implementation of my repository classes.

My project layout looks like this

[code]....

Every time I try to make the default constructor look like the first way, it always auto changes back to the second way once I make a change to the file unless the DBML is inside of a web project.

Web Forms :: Can't Select Dropdown List Option If There Is Only One Option Returned

Jun 29, 2010

It works fine if the dropdown gets populated with more than one record. However, if only one record is returned, that one record can't be selected. Whether you select it or just leave it alone since it's the only one, when you click the form button (search button), no results are returned b/c the dropdown selection must not be actually selected.

I've included the relevant code below. First the DDL, then the datasource, and finally the C# code in the if (!Page.IsPostBack)
