ADO.NET :: Data Load Options Using Linq To Sql?
Mar 23, 2011
Would it be wise to use DataLoad options (to reduce memory consumption) when I have the following tables:
Main table Generic Entity
Address and company are two different tables that both relate to Generic Entity (they contain the FK GenericEntityID) but do not relate to each other
My Code looks like this:
Public List<GetEntityListResult> GetEntityList()
{
using (EntityDataContext EntityDC = new EntityDataContext(Settings.ConnectionString))
{
EntityDC.DeferredLoadingEnabled = false;
[Code]....
If you notice in the above code, the return type is a generated type by the dbml designer (since I am using a stored proc), and it is irrelevant to Company, or Address or GenericEntity. Would it make a differance to use immediate loading with DataLoad options in my example?

I have around 5 SQL queries that are returning datasets to my VB.NET application, the queries could be any number not just 5. I have a listview already on the page and all the queries will return the same exact data types (just different numbers). How can I create a listview in the code behind for each one? Or what would be my other options to load up all the results

I'm running into a really annoying problem with my Linq to SQL project. When I add everything in under the web project everything goes as expected and I can tell it to use my existing connection string stored in the web.config file and the Linq code pulls directly from the ConfigurationManager.
This all turns ugly once I move the code into its own project. I've created an app.config file, put the connection string in there as it was in the web.config but when I try to add another table in the IDE keeps forcing me to either hardcode the connection string or creates a Settings file and puts it in there, which then adds a new entry into the app.config file with a new name.
Is there a way keep my Linq code in its own project yet still refer back to my config file without the IDE continuously hardcoding the connection string or creating the Settings file? I'm converting part of my DAL over to use Linq to SQL so I'd like to use the existing connection string that our old code is using as well as keep the value in a common location, and one spot, instead of in a number of spots.
Manually changing the mode to WebSettings instead of AppSettings works untill I try to add a new table, then it goes back to hardcoding the value or recreating the Settings file. I also tried to switch the project type to be a web project and then rename my app.config to web.config and then everything works as I'd like it to. I'm just not sure if there are any downfalls to keeping this as a web project since it really isn't one. The project only contains the Linq to SQL code and an implementation of my repository classes.
My project layout looks like this
[code]....
Every time I try to make the default constructor look like the first way, it always auto changes back to the second way once I make a change to the file unless the DBML is inside of a web project.

I have a partial class extending my Entity Model. I'd like to write a method that returns a collection of types from my entity framework model. For example, I'd like to get all the states to populate a drop down list. So I've written a method called getallstates(), similar to the example below:
[Code]....
I tried returning a list of Objects, and a list of states to my calling method to be used to bind to a drop down list. However I get an error that:
Server Error in Application. Unable to cast object of type 'System.Data.Objects.ObjectQuery to type 'System.Collections.Generic.List`1[System.Object]'.
What should my return type be for this function?

I need to create a gridview to show in each row, some columns from the SQL Database, and in other columns I want to have text fields, buttons and DropDownLists!
This GridView is to display the users of the web application.
First columns are name, email, and other stuff that can be easly queried to the SQL database.
Then, I need to have a column with one text field, and some buttons, in the text field the AdminUser should be able to insert some text and then click in a button to change the email/pass from the user represented in that line.
The other field I need, is a DropDownList that shows by default the Role of the user of the row, but we can choose another role and apply it, with a button in the same cell!
If I create a code-Behind query and populate the GridView, I don't know how to insert textbox's, button's, DropDownList's
If I create the GridView with the wizard, I can had TemplateFields, but I don't know how to associate the query with the BoundFiels where should be the name/email of the users.
Other problem, is that, even If I get to construct my GridView with sucess, How can I reference the row? So I can apply the changes?

I want to display the data in the format that is represented in the screenshot. All the data that is shown is retrieved from Sql Server-2005 Database. Which is the best option for such kind of data representation? I have read in the forums, from them I could not get a clear perspective. Some were suggesting listview others nested datagrid, some repeater control. which one would be a proper and accurate way to go forward ?? Along with some reasons (if possible). And I'm using visual studio 2008, .net Framework 3.5, asp.net with c# and I'm NOT using LINQ in my project and it is a web application. The same picture can also be found at [URL]

I don't much care for the template rigmarole of the ASP.NET FormView web forms control. It seems the only way to access template defined controls is to 'capture' module level references to the wanted controls in the ItemCreated data binding event, for use in other tasks and event handlers. Ideally I would just like to be able to call set this.DataSource and call this.DataBind on a page, but only the latter is possible through inheritence, and doesn't achieve any of my normal data binding needs. What else is there besides the hairy, scary FormView control?

I've been trying to figure this one out for hours now. I'm trying to figure out why IE8 insists on displaying my gridview differently than IE7 and other browsers. First of all, width is set to 100%. In IE7, the gridview uses up the entire space of the container it's in (like it should). In IE8, the gridview only takes up the space that is required by its content

I'm looking for a Data Grid View control compatible with Gizmox's Visual Web GUI that is on the level of Telerik's RAD Grid, or YUI's Data Grid. The stock Data Grid is lacking in the functionality that I require unfortunately. I'm using VWG 6.4. I know that I can wrap controls for use in VWG, but have not attempted it since 6.4's release. I had tried in the past to wrap Telerik's RAD Grid, but never got it work properly.

I have data display in a gridview base on a dropdownlist. Basically, base on the downlist selection my gridview will be populated with the corresponding data. I have addresses and emails in the list. Where I am stuck and not sure how to do is export the emails to outlook for a mailmerge. For example, when the user clicks on button to send the emails in Outlook. The emails should be the ones that are display in the gridview. For the MS Word is to export the address to populate the the labels so the user can print out labels. Another button to send the address for the labels

I'm using a book to create a shopping site and need to change the following code so that the current dropdown list, of colour options, is replaced by just read only text. I'm a novice and despite best efforts I can't fathom it out. If anyone can change the code for me I would be extremely grateful.
The code below is the code-behind page for a Product List page where I want each product displayed to also display its colour options as just text (I don't need the shopper to select a colour choice until they click through to the detail page)

I have two databases. When I am using MS Visual Web Developer, I can drag the table onto the webpage and it gives me check boxes to Insert, Update, Delete,...When I do the exact thing using the other database, it only has check boxes forpaging, sorting and selection. What is the difference? I seem to have all teh same permissions in both databases.

I have a page that is using the value from a textbox on a previous page to populate a formview. When I generate the Insert, Update and Delete Statements in Web Developer the edit brings up a blank page and the insert and delete don't work. It works if I just create the formview on a page and hardcode the value in the select statement then the Edit/Delete and Insert works.

I've got an ASP.NET MVC app that uses Linq to Sql for data access. Say I have two objects: An Order object that has a foreign key to a Customer object by CustomerID. So, in my Order class, you would see two properties: an int CustomerID field, and an EntityRef member accessible by a Customer property.When the edits or submits an Order, my MVC app will update the CustomerID field directly of the Order class, instead of updating the Customer property. This saves us from having to fetch a customer record, and I can use the default model binding code to fill the property automatically as long as the submitted form request has a customerID entry

I am trying to apply the same logic I applied to a FormView. Here is what I do: I have a DropDownListBox as one of my FormView fields and when I choose a specific option the fields inside my FormView are enabled/disabled according to the options chosen.
Well I havent been able to apply that concept to a GridView. Here is my code to the FormView:
[Code]....
Is there a GridView mode enumeration? How do I achieve the same goal?
