Forms Data Controls :: Select / Insert Statements In Buttonfield In Gridview

Jul 28, 2010

A bit new to buttonfields in gridviews - Did a bit of research and most of the stuff I came up with had the gridviews with data bound like so :

private void BindGridControl()
{//method created so that the binded gridview can allow paging controls
DataTable dt = new DataTable();
/*Gridview requires another column either a checkbox or a hyperlink column that
* can drill down another level and load a page where user can edit the data/cheque
* Will place an exception here that will prompt a window to notify users that
there were no rows returned
GridView1.Visible = true;
sqlSearch = "select store_nbr as [Store number],date as Date,data_type as [Data type],acct_1 as [Account 1], ";
sqlSearch += "amt_1 as [Amount 1],acct_2 as [Account 2],amt_2 as [Amount 2], ";
sqlSearch += "acct_3 as [Account 3], amt_3 as [Amount 3], cheque_nbr as [Cheque Number], ";
sqlSearch += "cheque_amt as [Cheque Amount], gst_hst as [GST/HST], qst as [QST],comments as [Comment] ";
sqlSearch += "from SimpData where store_nbr = '" + StoreNum + "'";
sqlCmd = new SqlCommand(sqlSearch, sqlConn);
SqlDataAdapter adapter = new SqlDataAdapter(sqlCmd);
if (dt.Rows.Count > 0)
//if there are rows returned bind the datasource to the gridview
GridView1.DataSource = dt;
//label control notifies user that there are no rows found
lblResults.Text = "Search returned no rows";
My ButtonFields<Columns>
<asp:ButtonField ButtonType="Button" CommandName="Select" HeaderText="Select item"
ShowHeader="True" Text="Select1">
<ControlStyle Width="50px" />
<HeaderStyle Font-Size="XX-Small" />

DataSource Controls :: Using IF Statements In LINQ Insert Query?

Jun 7, 2010

I tried to find a LINQ section on this forum, but couldn't, so I'll post this here since is deals with LINQ, C#, MVC, SQL Server, and well...just about everything.

Here's the details....My Application is an ASP .Net MVC 1.0 app, using C# 3.5, SQL Server 2005 Std, and LINQ to Entity.

In my View, I have numerous Html.CheckBox controls, they get passed to my Controller as a string collection via a JQuery Ajax call. The values of each checkbox are seperated by a comma(,). I then Split the string, to get the individual values. The overall purpose to to allow users to build a custom report with only the data elements they have checked the boxes for. Here is my controller:

The part that I am having a problem with is that I only want to Insert the data elements into my DB table for the ones that the user has selected the checkbox for. So, for example, I'd like to do something like this:

I don't know if there is a LINQ switch statement in which I can access outside variables and the columns of the table, or any thing like that.

Databases :: MySQL And Auto Generating Insert,Update - Delete Statements?

May 11, 2010

Before I get too far down the road I just want some advice. I'm building a web app using VWD2008 and MySQL 5. I've got the membership provider stuff working fine and have an odbc connection setup which works "fine". what I've noticed is that when I configure a new sqldatasource (that will be used to provide data to a listview or something) the Advanced -> generate Insert,Update..... option is disabled. I'm assuming its because of the sql syntax difference of the square brackets issue between MS SQL Server and MySQL.

Before I start writing all my own insert and update statements does anyone know if there is a way to get MySQL and VWD to talk the same language, maybe a different connector or something. I'm using mysql-connector-odbc-3.51.15

DataSource Controls :: Insert Comma Separated Values Into Multiple Columns Table?

Mar 22, 2010

I previously worked on the same requirmeent but with only single column. Now i need to insert for 5 columns, How can i do this? Below is my stored proc which i used for single column insertion.

Forms Data Controls :: Asp 3.5 Time Field In FormView / Update/insert Time Fields?

Oct 20, 2010

This is the sqlDateTime overflow problem again. Background. As I'm sure you know dates must be between 1/1/1753 and 12/31/2999. If you have an empty date field, it throws and exception. So I created a function (below) that solve the problem when attempting to update or insert a record with a date field. Works great.

Public Shared Function MakeDateField(ByVal pasDate As String) As Nullable(Of DateTime)

If IsDate(pasDate) Then
If pasDate <= System.DateTime.MinValue Then
Return Nothing
Return CType(pasDate, DateTime)
End If
Catch ex As NullReferenceException
Return Nothing
End Try
Return Nothing
End If
End Function

So I thought about using a time field. I have the field, have the validator in place and then attempted to test the page. It resulted in my least favorite error message "sqlDateTime overflow".

I can think of several workarounds like adding a date or a fixed date to the time field, or converting it to a string. Each of these is problematic.

Forms Data Controls :: Error When Inserting Into Table - Cannot Insert Explicit Value For Identity Column In Table

Aug 11, 2010

I am working on a web app for an online photo album. It is the last project in Scott Mitchell's book: "ASP.Net 2.0 in 24 hours".

I am creating a page where users can enter new photo images. The functionality for uploading an image will come later. I am working on just inserting a new row into the Pictures table with an optional category, a required title and a required description.

I am getting an error when I try to insert a new row.

Here is a screenshot of the page with a shot of the dropdown list.

The Categories are user-specific. I am getting the correct values retrieved.

There are two pretty simple database tables involved here.

NOTE: The CategoryID and PIctureID are both autoincrement integer columns.

The page uses a DetailsView that uses a SqlDataSource that uses the Pictures table. (The DetailsView's Default Mode property is set to "Insert". The "Enable Inserting" checkbox is also checked.)

The dropdown list uses a dropdown control that uses a SqlDataSource that uses the Categories table.

When the "Insert" button is clicked the CategoryID value associated with selected (Category) Name on the dropdown list will be used along with the Title and Description values to insert a row in to the Pictures table. (If no Category value is selected, then a null value will be used for the CategoryID. This is OK because the CategoryID column in the Pictures table allows nulls.)

My problem is that I am getting this error:

Cannot insert explicit value for identity column in table 'Pictures' when IDENTITY_INSERT is set to OFF.

(FYI: I have the full version of both Visual Studio and SQL Server.)

Here is my source code for the page:
