AJAX :: Autocomplete / Can't Get It To Hit The Method In My Service With A Signature?

Apr 9, 2010

I have a web control with a text box configured like this:

[Code]....

I am unable to get it to hit the method in my service with a signature like:

public
string[] GetOrganizationNames(string searchText,
int count)

but it does get to the method if I change the signature to:

public
string[] GetOrganizationNames()

For obvious reasons the second one will not do me any good. I have verified the data coming back from the method is good.

JQuery :: Autocomplete Call WCF Service Method

Oct 20, 2010

I am trying to use the below code to call a wcf service method for Autocomplete functionality in a TextBox. I have written the following query:

$(document).ready(function () {
$("#<%= txtCompany.ClientID %>").autocomplete [URL], {
dataType: 'json',
parse: function (data) {
var items = data.d;
var parsed = [];
for (var i = 0; i < items.length; i++)
parsed[i] = {
data: [items[i]],
value: items[i],
result: [items[i]]
};
return parsed;
}
});
});

The same query works if I pass a Java Script array variable instead of the wcf service method. The wcf service method contract is:

[OperationContract]
[WebInvoke(Method = "GET", BodyStyle = WebMessageBodyStyle.WrappedRequest, ResponseFormat = WebMessageFormat.Json)]
string[] GetTestCompanyList(string prefixText, int count);

i have developed a AutoComplete Search with the JAX AutoCompleteExtender Now i found a solution to use these control without a webservice (amsx) you only have the function in the codebehind (default.aspx.cs) , to do this you must let theServicePath empty. In the codebehind of your webpage is only the function which gets the data from the database.Important the function must be static !! AJAX :: Trying To Get AutoComplete To Call Web Service

Apr 26, 2010

I'm going on my 3rd day trying to get my Ajax AutoComplete textbox to call my web method. Based on my google searches, I'm not alone. I suspect the problem has something to do with the ServicePath property on the extender, although I'm not sure. My web service is at the same level, on the same server as my test web page. I'm not sure exactly what should go into the ServicePath property, although I think I've tried every possibility. Below is my web service followed by my script.

Return Multiple Types In Method's Signature?

Oct 13, 2010

I have two methods that do the similar thing. There are small differences here and there, which I can control by passing arguments to them when I call them, so I can effectively merge them. However one returns a string, and the other one an ArrayList. On the top of my head, I could merge them and return an Object, and then get the information I need. Is there a way though to return multiple types in the method's signature? What's the proper way to implement this?

Changing "web Reference" To "service Reference" Changes Method Signature?

Sep 3, 2010

I'm helping out a colleague on this one so if I'm missing some details that's why.We have an asp.net 3.5 web application calling a WCF service. Originally the app used a "Web Reference" to register the service however after having some trouble and burning an incident with Microsoft their solution was to replace the "Web Reference" with a "Service Reference" to the WCF service.This is great except the problem is that when we create a Service Reference, the method signatures are different than they were when a Web Reference was used.From what I've read this may be expected, however in our case this would mean some significant changes to the application and of course it was due yesterday...so......I'm wondering two things:Is it normal/expected that method signatures will change based on the reference type?Is there a way to create the Service Reference that will generate method signatures identical to the original Web Reference?

i know i can use params to specify a variable number of parameters for a method, but the gridview in asp.net looks for a method with the same fields it is updating, i.e if gridview updates fields :name, age, phone, email(suppose email is a custom field of a certain user i.e it doesn't exit for another), and the object data source calls the update method with signature : (name, age, phone, params object[] custom_attributes) an error is generated that the gridview can not find the method with the signature(name, age, phone, email)

JQuery AutoComplete (UI 1.8rc3) With Web Service

Mar 18, 2010

I have this version of the autocomplete control working when returning XML from a .ashx handler. The xml looks like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?>
<States>
<State>
<Code>CA</Code>
<Name>California</Name>
</State>
<State>
<Code>NC</Code>
<Name>North Carolina</Name>
</State>
<State>
<Code>SC</Code>
<Name>South Carolina</Name>
</State>

The autocomplete code looks like this:

$('.autocompleteTest').autocomplete(
{
source: function(request, response) {
var list = [];
$.ajax({
url: [URL]
dataType: "xml",
async: false,
data: request,
success: function(xmlResponse) {
list = $("State", xmlResponse).map(function() {
return {
value: $("Code", this).text(),
label: $("Name", this).text()
};
}).get();
}
});
response(list);
},
focus: function(event, ui) {
$('.autocompleteTest').val(ui.item.label);
return false;
},
select: function(event, ui) {
$('.autocompleteTest').val(ui.item.label);
$('.autocompleteValue').val(ui.item.value);
return false;
}
});

For various reasons, I'd rather be calling an ASP.NET web service, but I can't get it to work. To change over to the service (I'm doing a local service to keep it simple), the start of the autocomplete code is:

$('.autocompleteTest').autocomplete(
{
source: function(request, response) {
var list = [];
$.ajax({
url: "/Services/GeneralLookup.asmx/StateList",
dataType: "xml",

This code is on a page at the root of the site and the GeneralLookup.asmx is in a subfolder named Services. But a breakpoint in the web service never gets hit, and no autocomplete list is generated. In case it makes a difference, the XML that comes from the asmx is:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<string xmlns=[URL]><State> <Code>CA</Code> <Name>California</Name> </State> <State> <Code>NC</Code> <Name>North Carolina</Name> </State> <State> <Code>SC</Code> <Name>South Carolina</Name> </State></string>

Functionally equivalent since I never use the name of the root node in the mapping code. I haven't seen anything in the jQuery docs about calling a .asmx service from this control, but a .ajax call is a .ajax call, right? I've tried various different paths to the .asmx (~/Services/), and I've even moved the service to be in the same path to eliminate these issues. No luck with either.

C# - Why Does Silverlight Reference To Wcf Service Blow Up When Add Method To The Wcf Service That Returns Generic List

Aug 17, 2010

I have built a WCF Service that is being consumed by a Silverlight app. At first I created one method that was very simple:

public String SfTest()
{
return "SF Test";
}

No poblem. My silverlight app references my service and displays "SF Test" in a textbox. Now I add a method to my wcf service like this:

public List<String> GetTest()
{
List<String> list = new List<string>();
String a = "a";
list.Add(a);
String b = "b";
list.Add(b);
return list;
}

I update the reference to the service in my Silverlight app and the using statement in my xaml cs page throws an error like the service doesn't even exist although it is there. I am assuming the problem has to do with datatypes or serialization or something like that but it is driving me up the wall. Why can't I consume a simple generic list in my Silverlight app through the WCF service.
