AJAX :: Changing Web Service URL In App.config?

Jun 16, 2010

Is it possible to change the url that the web service is using in the app.config file once the windows application is running? Example a user changes the index of a drop down that will change the URL of the web service?

What I'm trying to accomplish is having a drop down that will let the user select between using the web service on our dev system versus the live system.

WCF / ASMX :: Toggle Between Prod And Test Web Service Without Changing Web.config?

May 5, 2010

My web.config is set up so that I don't have to change anything between deploy from UAT and Production. I can determine what machine it is running on and then programatically pick the correct connection string etc from the web.config based on the name.

Now we are adding a call to a web service which now causes us to have to make a change at deploy time. We set a "Region" flag in the web.config and then in coded an IF statement to call the appropriate webservice based on the flag so all we'd have to change is the "T" to a "P" when moving to production. But then hardcoding a web service in the application is not what we want to do. Nor do we want to change the web service address in the web.config.

Is there any way we can do something like the following to be able to not have to change the web.config at deploy?

It would be something like:

1. Grab current Machine name

2. Look in web.config for corresponding machine name web service reference (like we do for connection strings etc)

3. Use that web service in the processing.

Changing Web.config From Command Line

Dec 8, 2010

I have an ASP.NET application running under IIS. I'd like to be able to change one of the web.config values in Application Settings. I know it's possible to change it programmatically as described in this answer but I'm wondering if the same thing can be accomplished from the command line.

The IIS 7 Manager allows application settings and connection strings (among other options) to be changed. My hope is there is a way to do the same via the command line for IIS 6 and/or 7.

Web.config: Changing An Application Setting With C#?

Oct 29, 2010

How can I change an application setting within a web.copnfig programmatically with C# (from another application, which configures the web-application)?
The following code snipped doesn't work, because AppSettings[...] is readonly!

configuration = WebConfigurationManager.OpenWebConfiguration(...);
ConfigurationSectionGroup configurationSectionGroup = (ConfigurationSectionGroup)configuration.GetSectionGroup("applicationSettings");
ConfigurationSection configurationSection = (ConfigurationSection)configurationSectionGroup.Sections[...];
configurationSection.CurrentConfiguration.AppSettings[...].value = value

Changing CustomErrors In Web.config Semi-dynamically

May 24, 2010

The basic idea is we have a test enviroment which mimics Production so customErrors="RemoteOnly". We just built a test harness that runs against the Test enviroment and detects breaks. We would like it to be able to pull back the detailed error. But we don't want to turn customErrors="On" because then it doesn't mimic Production.

I've looked around and thought a lot, and everything I've come up with isn't possible. Am I wrong about any of these points?

We can't turn customErrors on at runtime because when you call configuration.Save() - it writes the web.config to disk and now it's Off for every request.We can't symlink the files into a new top level directory with it's own web.config because we're on windows and subversion on windows doesn't do symlinks.
We can't use URL-Mapping to make an empty folder dir2 with its own web.config and make the files in dir1 appear to be in dir2 - the web.config doesn't apply. We can't copy all the aspx files into dir2 with it's own web.config because none of the links would be consistent and it's a horrible hacky solution.
We can't change customErrors in web.config based on hostname (e.g. add another dns entry to the test server) because it's not possible/supported. We can't do any virtual directory shenanigans to make it work.

If I'm not, is there a way to accomplish what I'm trying to do? Turn on customErrors site-wide under certain circumstances (dns name or even a querystring value)?

Changing Web Service Namespace After Deployed?

May 21, 2010

unfortunate events we published a web service with the tempuri-namespace a couple of months ago and no one noticed (not in our company, not the companies connecting to the web service) even though it's live since that time and lots of companies (~25 i guess) already access this web service.Now I'm thinking of correcting that mistake and have the namespace fixed to a proper value.The only problem is that as soon as we would do it, all the programs and services connected to this web service would stop working. I can't really allow that to happen.Is there any way to fix the namespace for future purpose or to have the web service operate under two namespaces as one web service?What can I do to get rid of the tempuri-namespace and have it fixed without needing to synchronize the change with all the external companies?

Setting Up Dev Environment / Publish The Project Without Manually Changing The Web.config File?

Feb 15, 2011

I'm working on different windows machines and virtual windows machines on a mac. I have a project wich uses SQL server and AD for autentication.

Right now I have to be connected to VPN so that the asp.net web application can connect to AD using LDAP string to autentivate users, I also have the SQL server on the other side of the VPN connection.

Is there any way to setup my enviroment so that I can work locally without the AD, and on a local SQL server and be able to publish the project without manually changing the web.config file?

Distribute Web Service As DLL And Specify Endpoint In Web.config?

Dec 28, 2010

I have a Web service currently in an ASMX file. I want to move this code into its own class library project which generates a DLL. I want to be able to drop this DLL into any Web application and have it work. However, without an ASMX file, I have no URL endpoint. How do I get around this? Essentially, I want to run a Web service without having to distribute an ASMX. I just want to distribute a DLL. Can I map the endpoint for the Web service in the web.config, or something? (I think that perhaps WCF might do this, but one look at the config for that, and it feels like the cure is worse than the disease...)

.net - Cannot Set Authorization Rules In Web.config For WCF Service

Feb 9, 2011

I read on a post that you can use ASP.Net authorization in the web config to control access to a WCF web service to replace the following attribute:

[PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, Role="Administrators")]

To test I have been using "Administrators" which is a valid role so should allow me access and "TEST" which isnt. This works fine when using the above attribute however when I comment that out and use this in my Web.Config file:

<authentication mode="Windows" />
<authorization>
<allow roles=".TEST"/>
<deny roles="*"/>
</authorization>

It still allows me access.

So I was wondering if I have just got something wrong in the web.config or whether what I read was wrong saying to use that.

Just for reference this is the post I looked at:

C# - WCF Service Not Impersonating Specified User In Config?

Mar 2, 2011

I have a basic WCF service using basicHttpBinding. I have my site project and my services project. In my site project, I have a regular Services Reference to a service in my services project. In my development environment, it works fine. However, in our staging environment, we have enabled impersonation on the services application. This service connects to a SQL database using this user, of course.

The issue is, while the other ASMX services seem to impersonate just fine with the user defined in the web.config, the WCF service is still running as the site's user, causing SQL authentication to fail.

Are there extra steps to enable impersonation for my WCF service? I have not done anything special beside adding:

service.ClientCredentials.Windows.AllowedImpersonationLevel = System.Security.Principal.TokenImpersonationLevel.Delegation;

After I initialize my service proxy from my website.

Setting Variables In Web Config For Web Service Consumption?

Apr 6, 2010

I did a couple google searches about this and am not finding anything, so I thought I'd ask here. I'm working on our internal CMS and I noticed that we're getting live data back when doing debugging because of our web services instead of the dev data that I wanted. It doesn't do this on our dev CMS website, but we're trying to do all our development on localhost. Is there any way to set up an environment variable in our web config for the URL so that the CMS points to the dev database instead of live database that is referenced in the wsdl files?

Web Form And Ajax Data Lost On Post Back - Finding Possible Cause / Ajax Or Changing Visible Property

Sep 15, 2010

I have two Repeater controls, each hosted in a user control. Both user controls are contained in the same aspx page. Only one User Control is visible at any one time. The repeaters are comprised of checkboxes, and text boxes for user input.

The aspx page is configured with an Ajax ScriptManager; and contains several Ajax UpdatePanels. These UpdatePanels result in partial page post backs when text is changed in a textbox control in controls on the aspx page (this is not the behaviour for the Repeaters in the User Controls). Through use of several AsyncPostBackTriggers, various controls contained in the other UpdatePanels on the page have their content refreshed in response to the partial page post backs they are configured be notified about.

Depending on a radio button group selection, I set the visible property to true or false - as appropriate for the User control containing a repeater control. The Repeater control is then populated with data using databinding. All of this works.

However, when the Submit button is clicked, the Repeater control contains no data.

Given that I am not dynamically adding the Controls containing the Repeater controls (but using Visible true / false). I would have thought that the State of the fields and the data in the visible control would be preserved during the post back.

The User Controls are contained within the UpdatePanel that contains the Submit Button.

I have explicitly Enabled View state without any effect.

Am I correct in assuming that I should not have to do any explicit handling of data changes the user makes (via client side script and manipulation of an Data Structure Representing the Repeater Data); and the View State should maintain the data I need to access on the server when submitted?

I do not believe that it is the User Control visible state changes that are causing the issue because when the page is initially loaded on of the User controls is populated with dummy rows (so it displays).

I am suspicious that because the visible state of the controls is changed during partial page post back, that the Page View State ends up with no knowledge of the User Control and therefore cannot track its data (or changes).

AJAX :: Changing Web Reference URL

Feb 25, 2010

I am displaying a GridView on the details page with an ObjectDataSource pointing to a Web service. My problem is that I somehow want to change the 'Web Reference URL' depending on which record the user chose on the main page? AJAX :: Application Hangs While Changing The Tab?

Feb 19, 2010

I am using update panel and Tab container of Visual Studio 2008 (VB .NET) in my pages, but in one of the pages I am having a problem. The page structure is something like a List Tab and Details Tabs. On page load LIST tab is visible and other tabs invisible. User clicks on a record and click Modify button. Then List tab gets invisible and other details tabs (4 of them) visible. Here I have OK (to save data) and CANCEL (do not save the data) buttons. On which the list tab again gets visible and other tabs invisible. Now here I am facing a problem. I have same functionality on my other pages also. But in this page when I click on OK or CANCEL button my application hangs after END SUB. My whole click event of both the buttons runs fine up to END SUB but after that the problem starts.
