Setting Up Dev Environment / Publish The Project Without Manually Changing The Web.config File?

Feb 15, 2011

I'm working on different windows machines and virtual windows machines on a mac. I have a project wich uses SQL server and AD for autentication.

Right now I have to be connected to VPN so that the asp.net web application can connect to AD using LDAP string to autentivate users, I also have the SQL server on the other side of the VPN connection.

Is there any way to setup my enviroment so that I can work locally without the AD, and on a local SQL server and be able to publish the project without manually changing the web.config file?

Setting Up A Project's Development Environment From Scratch?

Aug 27, 2010

I'm in the process of setting up a project's development environment from scratch. My company has used various technologies, but this is the first time we're able to focus on the development environment for a .NET project from the ground up -- and I'm the lucky guy who gets to make it work.

I'm actually very excited to do this, as it has the potential to become a pattern for repeated success across multiple projects.

I'd like your help to assess the build process that I'm using and shout out where I may find myself running into issues.

So, here goes--

Server Side:Windows Server 2008
SQL Server 2008 (relatively small / low traffic DB, wasn't worth devoting a separate VM in dev)
VisualSVN for hosting source code (just easier to manage on Windows),
Trac hooked into VisualSVN for wiki/bugs/tracking
NAnt for automatic builds / running unit tests
FxCop (potentially) as another set of tests from CruiseControl to check framework best practices
CruiseControl.NET for continuous integration, to automatically call the NAnt build and run NUnit / FxCop tests when new source is committed.
Dev Machines / Tools:VS 2010
NUnit
CSLA (potentially) to use in developing our business logic layer
NHibernate or Entity Framework (potentially) help facilitate OR/M

Web.config: Changing An Application Setting With C#?

Oct 29, 2010

How can I change an application setting within a web.copnfig programmatically with C# (from another application, which configures the web-application)?
The following code snipped doesn't work, because AppSettings[...] is readonly!

configuration = WebConfigurationManager.OpenWebConfiguration(...);
ConfigurationSectionGroup configurationSectionGroup = (ConfigurationSectionGroup)configuration.GetSectionGroup("applicationSettings");
ConfigurationSection configurationSection = (ConfigurationSection)configurationSectionGroup.Sections[...];
configurationSection.CurrentConfiguration.AppSettings[...].value = value

How To Determine Which Parent Config File Is Locking A Web.config Setting

Mar 15, 2011

When I open my ASP.NET site in IIS and try to open the .NET Trust Levels, I get an error message:

.NET Trust Levels There was an error while performing this operation.

Details:
Filename: ?C:inetpubwwwrootmyappweb.config
Line number: 445

Error: This configuration section cannot be used at this path. This happens when the section is locked at a parent level. Locking is either by default (overrideModeDefault="Deny"),or set explicitly by a location tag with overrideMode="Deny" or the legacy allowOverride="false".

I've checked a few places, but I haven't found anything that seems like it would be locking that setting. Is there a systematic way of determining where that setting is locked?

I'm using IIS 7.5 and .NET 3.5 sp1.

Web.Config File Corrupting On Publish?

Aug 22, 2010

So I've just started up my most recent website: [URL]

and it would seem that every 5th or 6th time I publish my project out of VS 2005 the Web.Config file corrupts and loses its connection string to the database and a nasty exception gets thrown stating that the web.config file does not contain the connection string that all of my SQLDataSource objects use.

I found this unanswered question that would also fix the issue: [URL]

But I'd rather know if there were some sort of simple fix for this that I don't know about.

C# - Post Build Copy Config File To Another Project?

Feb 13, 2010

I have a solution which contains a website and various class libraries. The exists on the file system like so:

C:Projects MyWebsitedevMyWebsite.sln
C:ProjectsCoreMyClassLibrary1.csproj
C:ProjectsCoreMyClassLibrary2.csproj

I want to move the App.config file from MyClassLibrary1 project to the bin of the MyClassLibrary2. I want to do this on post build in VS or MSBuild using relative paths if possible. This way anybody checking out the projects will not have to modify any paths if they choose to locate the project in a different location.

I have already tried the following approaches but to no avail.

copy /Y "$(ProjectDir)App.config"
$(ProjectDir).. MyClassLibrary2$(OutDir) MyClassLibrary2.dll.config"

Error From Config File After Converting Website Project To Web Application?

Jun 22, 2010

I got this error in a project I did a while back. I think this was a web site project that i converted to a web app project. This was a while ago. This is an app I'm trying to run on my local machine. I'm not using IIS.

Does anyone know what this means?

Error 2

It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

Manually Changing Username In Membership?

Jan 26, 2010

I am able to change a username by directly accessing the asp.net membership user tables. However, the old username is preserved in a new row and assigned a new UserID automatically by asp.net. How do I stop that from happening?

EDIT: only in the users table and roles table, not the membership table.

var mUser = dc.aspnet_Users
.Where(u => u.UserId == (Guid)user.ProviderUserKey)
.Select(u => u).SingleOrDefault();
mUser.UserName = newName;
mUser.LoweredUserName = newName.ToLower();

Setting Up Development Environment For ASP MVC

Jan 19, 2010

I'm from PHP background. I used to use Apache, MySQL and PHP for web development. I'm just starting asp.net mvc. I've Visual Studio 2008 Pro SP1 & .NET 3.5 SP1 already installed on my computer. So, I installed ASP.NET MVC 1.0 Created a "ASP.NET MVC Web Application" project when I hit F5 it gives error Unable to connect to the ASP.NET Development Server No wonder. In this process I didn't setup the webserver. Can I use apache here? I guess IIS is the default. Where is it? How do I configure it? What is the WebRoot directory for IIS server? Where can I find it? On searching for "Unable to connect to the ASP.NET Development Server" I found this solution:

Step 1: Select the "Tools->External Tools" menu option in VS or Visual Web

Developer. This will allow you to configure and add new menu items to your Tools menu.

Step 2: Click the "Add" button to add a new external tool menu item. Name it "WebServer on Port 8010" (or anything else you want).

Step 3: For the "Command" textbox setting enter this value: C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727WebDev.WebServer.EXE (note: this points to the web-server that VS usually automatically runs).

Step 4: For the "Arguments" textbox setting enter this value: /port:8010 /path:$(ProjectDir) (or any port you like)

Step 5: Select the "Use Output Window" checkbox (this will prevent the command-shell window from popping up. Once you hit apply and ok you will now have a new menu item in your "Tools" menu called "WebServer on Port8010". You can now select any web project in your solution and then choose this menu option to launch a web-server that has a root site on port 8010 (or whatever other port you want) for the project. You can then connect to this site in a browser by simply saying [URL] All root based references will work fine.

Step 6: The last step is to configure your web project to automatically reference this web-server when you run or debug a site instead of launching the built-in web-server itself. To-do this, select your web-project in the solution explorer, right click and select "property pages". Select the "start options" setting on the left, and under server change the radio button value from the default (which is use built-in webserver) to instead be "Use custom server". Then set theBase URL value to be: [URL] But there is no C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727WebDev.WebServer.EXE such file on my system. Did I forget to install something?

EDIT:

I'm using Windows XP SP2 and logged in as a user with Administrative previlages. from this [URL]

Disable IPv6

Done

Make sure there isnt an edit in the hosts file for localhost There is no single entry in my hosts file (%SystemRoot%system32driversetchosts) with 'localhost' in it. Check firewall/virus settings to allow connections to/from devenv.exe I tried by disabling the firewall/antivirus If you can preview in the browser make sure the URL in the browser uses the same port number as the port number shown in the ASP.NET dev server taskbar icon. No, Actually there is no such dev server taskbar icon. Try setting a fixed, predefined port in project properties Tried it. But no positive result. S

Solution:

After trying everything. I came to conclusion that WebDev.WebServer.exe may be corrupt. So, I've replaced C:Program FilesCommon Filesmicrosoft sharedDevServer9.0WebDev.WebServer.EXE with a fresh copy : [URL]

Is there a way write code in web.config file using preprocessed function. Say I created environment variables like %Temp%, %WINDIR%. order to read these I can use the configurationManager class. But I dont want to use it. I woudl like to use a preprocessed function similar to timeStampPattern="{timestamp(local)}". Here timestamp(local) retrieves the value directly. So in a similar way can i read the environment variables %temp% and %windir% using preprocessed function if any exists?

C# - Setting A Timeout Using A Manually Created Forms Authentication Ticket?

Dec 29, 2010

The constructors for manually creating FormsAuthenticationTicket objects force us to set an "expiration" value, and this value overrides the "timeout" setting in web.config in my tags, which is not what I want, because now the user doesn't timeout. The "session" just expires at the given time.I need to manually create my ticket for UserData reasons, and it is just the way I decided to build my app. I guess I could spend a whole lot of time and redo the way my app. authorizes, and store the "userdata" elsewhere... but this seems extremely tedious for something so small..Is there anyway to manually create an Auth Ticket and still maintain timeout settings?! And by timeout, I mean resetting the timer on user activity. Not a fixed timeout!
