ASP Application Timeout?

May 15, 2010

I have an application I have just deployed which, for complicated reasons, stores all the data from the database in a module the first time any data from the specific table is required (i.e. when a customer requests to view a product for the first time, all the product data is stored in the ProductManager class (of which an instance is stored in a shared property of the SiteContent class, making the ProductManager easily accessible from any page). Now forget that you are probably now glaring at me for using this approach.. I am sure it has its inefficiencies but I have only been studying .Net for a year or so now so I am still learning.

One thing I have noticed is that I can go on the site once, then revisit it 5 minutes later and it will load all the data into the ProductManager class again. It seems this is a .Net application timeout thing - since the session timeout is set to 30 minutes and, when I am logged in on the administration frontend, it logs me out after 5 minutes (ish).Does anyone have any idea how to change this? Is there any way I can change this in the code without having to contact the hosting company? If not in the code is there any way to change this in the web.config?

State Management :: Form Timeout Vs. Session Timeout Vs. Connectionstrings Timeout?

Jan 27, 2011

We have the timeout value set to 120 in our <form> tag within the web.config. We do not have a session timeout set.. and we have various connection strings.

We are having a problem where a session variable will disappear (become NULL) .. but, the form evidently remains 'open'.. or no re-login is required..... so, my question(s):

1. what is the relationship between form timeout and session timeout

2. how do I set session timeout

Configuration :: Session Timeout On Job Application Page?

Jan 12, 2011

We have a asp.net application where users will apply for jobs online. When users fill out the form the page isn't timing out the session. If a user goes back to the main page the last user's information is still available.

I have setup many websites and have never had to make any changes on IIS, under the configuration within the website. The default is 20 minutes we can change it to 8 or 10, but I think this issue should be taken care of in the code. The setting will affect the entire site instead of the pages that need to timeout.

What is the best way to do this within the code?

DataSource Controls :: SQL Statement Timeout / System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout Expired?

Jan 20, 2010

Hopefully I am posting this in the correct forum.

I am having a problem with my ASP.Net Web application. The application is developed using vb.net and is linked to a SQL Server database. Let me explain how the application works and the problem I am experiencing. The system is an online web app which allows registered users to create a CV online. One of the pages within the app gives users the chance to add a cover note to their CV. The page that allows them to do this consists of only a textarea control and a button control. The textarea allows users to input up to 4,000 characters.

Once the user clicks the 'Save' button to save their cover note info, the following code then executes.This code checks to see if the CV already has cover note info, if it does, then the application runs an update statement, otherwise, it runs an insert statement.The table within the database which records the cover note information is called tbl_covernote and has three columns, covernote_id (int and autoincrement), cv_id(int), covernote_text (nvarchar(max)).

The error which occurs sometimes is as follows:

Dim dr As SqlDataReader
Dim param(0) As SqlParameter
Finally [code]...

AJAX Timeout Although Request Is Completing Long Before Timeout Duration

Feb 15, 2010

I have an ASP.Net application that makes an AJAX request to retrieve at report. The report can run for a long time so I set the asyncpostbacktimeout in <asp:ScriptManager /> to 600. However, when I try to run the report, if it runs for longer than 90 seconds it fails to come back. I can see in the IIS logs that the POST request succeeded with a 200 status and I can see the time taken is much less than 600.

The web page dutifully waits for the entire 600 seconds before returning with a timeout error:

Error:

Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerTimeoutException:

The server request timed out.

Is there any setting I should be checking in IIS? Connection timeout is 900 seconds.

Differences In Forms Auth Timeout And Session Timeout?

Feb 1, 2010

The session state timeout is set using this web.config element

<sessionState mode="InProc" cookieless="false" timeout="120" />
The forms auth is configured using this web.config element
<system.web>
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="Login.aspx"
protection="All"
timeout="30"
name=".ASPXAUTH"
path="/"
requireSSL="false"
slidingExpiration="true"
defaultUrl="default.aspx"
cookieless="UseDeviceProfile"
enableCrossAppRedirects="false" />
</authentication>
</system.web>

What is the difference between the timeouts specified in each of these elements? If both are different, how would it work?

Web Services - Does The Server Timeout Setting Affect The Client Timeout Setting

Oct 15, 2010

I'm working with ASP.Net web services and am having a problem with a long-running process that takes about 5 minutes to complete, and it's timing out. To fix this, I was able to set the executionTimeout on the server's web.config to 10 minutes, and then set the .Timeout property on the Web Service object to approximately 9 minutes. Now, I'm worried that this may possibly cause some other web service calls to sit there for 10 minutes before they time out rather than the previous 90-100 seconds. I know the default on the client side is 100 seconds, but wasn't sure if updating the server's timeout setting would affect this.

Bottom line is - Is it safe to update the server's timeout setting to a long amount like 10 minutes, and rely on the default timeout on the client, or could this end up causing some problems?

<sessionState mode="InProc" cookieless="false" timeout="30"/>

Is this the only place where Sessions timeouts are defined Is this timeoout in web.config the only one for all the sessions in the application. Can I not set the session timeouts for each session individually.
IF so, where??

I am looking to use "Keep me Logged-in", where do I have to set the timeout to Maximum

ASP.NET 2.0 Session Timeout

Jul 16, 2010

I have an asp.net 2.0 application which times out after say 15-20 minutes if user didnt do any activity and presses a button on the page(he is redirected to sessionExpired.aspx page). I have set the session timeout to 60 minutes in my web.config file but still somehow the user is timed out.

I have another question related to this regarding the Session Timeout Precedence. Does IIS session timeout take priority over ASP.NET session timeout. Say if IIS session timeout is set to 20 minutes and ASP.NET session timeout is 60 minutes, does ASP.NET override IIS session timeout.

C# - .NET MVC Upload File Timeout?

Jan 21, 2011

I currently have an ASP.NET MVC project that has file uploading and it works great if the user has a good enough connection and their file is of a reasonable size.The problem I'm running into is that sometimes a user might have a 56k connection (how they can live with it in this day and age, I don't know) or are uploading a larger file or some combination of the two.

I'd like to keep a small timeout for normal pages (90 seconds or so), but allow for a larger timeout for actions where a user is uploading. This is just one action, so I don't mind putting code inside just that singular action rather than a generic solution.Ultimately, a solution that would automatically increase the timeout if Request.Files.Count > 0 would be the best.

Prevent GET Request Timeout?

Jan 19, 2010

I've got an ASP.NET application that serves MP3 content, but that content is generated during the request and can delay the sending of the response's first byte by several minutes.

The client is a podcatcher (I don't know which), and the lowest timeout I've seen is 20 seconds. That is, these clients are (reasonably enough) giving up relatively quickly, assuming there's no response coming.

How can I keep these clients from giving up? How can I let them know a response is coming?

How To Timeout The Client Session

Apr 2, 2011

I'm looking to include a behavior in the base page that, when the session times out (after say 20 min), makes a call back to the client, erases the session cookie, and redirects the user to a "your session has timed out" page.

Before I start coding, I was wondering if there's a functionality in the framework that already handles this.

ASPxGridView POST Timeout?

Feb 17, 2010

I have a ASPxGridView with DetailRow in this row there are three additional ASPxGridViews. Each detail ASPxGridView contains EmptyDataRow templates with link to create a new row:

<a href="javascript:gridViewDetails1.AddNewRow();">AddNewRecord</a>

When master ASPxGridView rows is 1 or 2 then new rows in detail grids adding fine, but if in master ASPxGridView rows about 10 or more then when I clicking on detail grids link to add new row the loading panel appers for unlimited time and FireBug->Net shows that status of POST is timeout and time is about 1 sec.

How can I repair it?

To AGoodDisplayName:

are the detail row gridviews bound to anything?

yes of course, inside the details row of master gridView there are 3 another gridView and each of them have a separate ObjectDataSource.

Are you expanding more than row at a time?No, I have only one row at time:

AllowOnlyOneMasterRowExpanded="true"

Yep:<asp:ObjectDataSource ID="dsMaster" runat="server" TypeName="..." SelectMethod="...">
