Adding Tab Controls
Apr 19, 2012
I had a standard input form which had around 12 fields on it (name, address 1 etc). This form worked perfectly well, no problems with it.
I decided to add the Ajax Tab control to tidy the page up a little so I added three tabs - general, contact, access.
The first tab - general had four fields on it as did the other two. When I tried to build, it said
'UserCityBox' is not declared. It may be inaccessible due to its protection level.
The fields on the first tab are fine, the other two tab fields show the above error (it changes for the field obviously).

Depending on the data returned from a Stored Procedure, I need to add specific controls to a page and then when they are populated by the user, write them back to the database. What is the easiest way of doing this?

There are two fields and a button :
1)text box for the caption.
2)drop down list to select the control to be added.
3)button is an ADD button .
when the "ADD" button is clicked the text entered in the "caption" text box has to appear in the first cell of the first row in the table and the control selected from the dropdown list has to be added to the second cell of the same row. similarly many such captions and controls have to be dynamically addded to the successive rows of the table as per user selection ( note: the previously selected control and caption label must persist on furthur selections .
how do i go about the adding controls and the text into the table part ?

I've always understood that it was best practice to add event handlers in code in the page load event thus:
Button1.Attributes.Add("onclick", "alert('Hello');");
rather than "onclientclick=somefunction()"
My question is, how do you add event handlers to formview controls where the control(s) may only be on the edit template and not on the insert and read only templates.
Simply putting the code in the page load would produce an error.
Where should the statement be placed in such scenarios?

Im into a situation, where, I need to embed linkbutton to gridview to display one field (TITLE) from database. It was done as I've added it in the itemtemplate. Now my situation is bit refined; I should add a text box and another linkbutton which should be disabled on page load and when ever I click that linkbutton which is displaying (TITLE) should make the textbox and another linkbutton visible by displaying corresponding values from the database in the textbox.

So I have a gridview control and I am binding it's datasource dynamically base on a dropdownlist. The gridview contains autogenerated columns with auto generated edit buttons. The datasource binded to the gridview is IQueryable<T> where T will be different for different datasource.
My detail problem is below:
A GridView binded to datasource dynamically with all autogenerated columns. When user click edit link, it will display value in autogenerated textboxes.
When user click update link, I am able to capture the user entered value in the textboxes in RowUpdating event, then pass those values to Linq update function to update the database. Now, the problem begin when I try to dynamically add validation controls to each editing row. In RowDataBound event, I am checking the editrowindex then adding validation control to gridview cell and pointing to cell.controls[0] which is the textbox control when the row is in edit mode, I am dynamically setting the textbox control id so that the validation control can set controltovalidate property. The validation control works, but the updating function is setting everything on the grid to empty string.
I am check the textbox text value in the loop, which returns "" for all cells except the id column. It was returning the correct value before I add the validation control. I guess since I added the validation control on rowdatabound event, will it rerender it's own autogenerated textbox in edit mode so that the text value of textbox no longer available in rowupdating event?
Is there a better or correct way to get the cell textbox value? I am using ((TextBox)dc.Controls[0]).Text where dc is DataControlFieldCell in rowupdating event.

I have a page I need to build out where depending on the selection the user made on a form on the page prior it displays a different set of questions for them to answer.
So say the user selects Reason A from the form on page edit, then it needs to display Questions 1 and 2 on page edit_confirmation. But if they select Reason B then it needs to display Questions 3 and 4.
I'm grabbing the reason code from the query string and have a switch statement set up, but I can't find anywhere how to output different controls. If Questions 1 and 2 are supposed to show up, one could be a text box and the other a checkbox, but if questions 3 and 4 are supposed to show up one may need to be a dropdown list and a checkbox.
EDIT: I'm going to try some of the below suggestions and will be back to mark the answer and upvote accordingly. Thank you all for the quick response.
EDIT EDIT: Both rlb.usa and AndrewVos's answers worked equally well. I went with Andrew's since it seemed like the more "proper" way of doing it.

As far as I know if you want to dynamically add controls it should be done on Pre_Init event.I tried to add them on Page_Load and it still works. Controls restore state after postpack, everything looks all right.Is it always like this?(because for me it's easier to use Page_Load event, because it is fired from outermost to the innermost control)

I'm trying to add some user controls on a page. Thats easy, I just do it like this.
UserControl block = (categoryblock) LoadControl("categoryblock.ascx");
Panel1.Controls.Add(block);
But i want to access the label controls and more that are inside the categoryblock.ascx. How would i do that? I cant do it like this,
block.l_itemName.text = "blabla";
I managed to user FindControl("l_itemName") but i would rather like to have the intellisense.

here is the requirement:
i have a lable a textbox, and two buttons(+ and - button) on my asp.net page.
so when i click on the plus button it should add the the whole collection of controls to the page(i.e. lable, textbox and two buttons). And when i click on minus button it should remove the collection.
This should go on.meaning whenever i click on any plus button the control collection should get added to the page.
I am wondering what will be the best approach to do it.

I'm attempting to create a custom control that extends the Table class. Inside of the table will be rendered a number of different controls based on a specified identifying property. On some of these controls, however, I need to specify validation for data types and requirement. To me, the most logical way of doing so is to add validators to the table and set their appropriate properties to specify which controls to validate. In doing so, however, I've discovered that none of the validators added will even render on the page in which the control is added. So is this a valid construct?
Here's an example of what I mean:
[Code]....
End result? No validation. So what's the move?

I am creating a page where I am required to have a list/customized view of the data returned, unfortunately a Gridview will not handled the way that I need to display the data. One of my requirements is that I need to have a Column Seperator. I know how to add a row to the gridview on the fly, but I am not sure on how to do that with the Datalist. Can someone please point me into the right direction?

I am adding controls dynamically in my webpage.
I add them in onload method.
everything is working fine..
But I m a bit confused about how it works..
I have read in so many articles that all controls get their values from viewstate before load event. Then how my dynamically added controls get their values when i am adding them in OnLoad event ie after LoadPostData event.

I want to add more controls to page based on some specific conditions. Those controls don't need any ViewState or binding data, it is as simple as a static link. I wonder where I could write the code: inside OnLoad or OnInit method? and why? If I place it inside OnLoad, should I add following line: if (IsPostBack) return; before any initialization code?

Okay, this is a continuation of a previous question of mine, but it is distinct enough to be its own question. Based on user interaction, I'm calling a .ashx handler via a jquery ajax call, and that handler is building some html for me that includes some Telerik controls like a masked textbox (masked for a phone number like "(###) ###-####".
I got around all the hurdles of using Render() to get the html output of a server control even when it doesn't have a "Page" object or a ScriptHandler object.However, when I show the control to a user, I see the mask in the text of the textbox, but the mask doesn't "work" in the sense that when a user starts typing, it is as if the mask is really just text.
So, my question is, after putting the html code out for a masked textbox, how do I tell whatever javascript is supposed to mask the input to really start masking on that specific control?

My masterpage has a loginStatus control to let users log out and it works very well on normal pages .Recently, I created a new content page associated with the mentioned master page. Such new page allows users to add textboxes dynamically through ajax asycpostback.
Unfortunately, loginstatus right now fails to work when i click it. I traced the process and i found out that the loggingout event was not fired when i click it.
I follow this video to make such "Dynamically add control" page.
