Ajax Request : Application/x-www-form-urlencoded Params?
Jan 19, 2010
While adding the parameters to get/post request they need to be encoded in application/x-www-form-urlencoded form. So do we need to encode values each time ? Does JavaScript have any method for that ? What are the possible caches ?On server side when we read the values we do not decode them we directly say Request.Params["key"] and that returns value. Does that mean that they are automatically taken care when we read the values?

This is a input
<input type="image" src="<%=Url.Content("~/images/shopping-cart.jpg")%>" alt="shopping cart" id="btnshoppingCart" name="btnshoppingCart" value="shoppingCart" />
when i browse the page with firefox and click on the input Request.Params["btnshoppingCart"] != null or Request.Form["btnshoppingCart"] != null is statisfied.
When i browse the same page with internet explorer 8 and click on the same input Request.Params["btnshoppingCart"] != null or Request.Form["btnshoppingCart"] != null is not satisfied. When i used the watch i saw that there is no key by the name of "btnshoppingCart" in either Request.Form or Request.Params if input is clicked from internet explorer. However when it is clicked from firefox there is value "shoppingCart" inside Request.Form and Request.Params against "btnshoppingCart" key. One more strange thing that i observed was that are two keys "btnshoppingCart.x" and "btnshoppingCart.y" inside both Request.Form and Request.Params whenver clicking is done from both internet explorer and firefox. This is happening against all inputs of type image irrespective if the input is present inside a html form or not. Forms are created like this
<% using (Html.BeginForm("Action", "Controller", FormMethod.Post)){%>
The version of internet explorer is 8.0 and firefox is 3.6.6

Edit I'd misunderstood what was happening here.. there is a POST send, then receive back a result, then the URL string which I'm seeing here is part of the the query string... so I can't decode what this really is, as it is encoded by the payment gateway people and not me.
I'd like to decode a URL string
Here is the code:

I'm using HttpModule to capture requests to the web server. Before processing the page I'd like to check the values contained in some keys of the Request.Form collection and according to some logic change if necessary. I'd like to do this when BeginRequest event is fired. The problem is that the Request.Form collection is readonly.

My Request.Form keys are all prefixed with ctl00$container name$ and then the key I want.
How can I get the regular key name working?
Visual example from the immediate window:
I want to use:
? request.Form.Item("stationIdea")
but it won't work because the key is:
ctl00$content_innovation_body$stationIdea
as retrieved by
? request.Form.Keys("4")
so only this works:
? request.Form("ctl00$content_innovation_body$stationIdea")

I know how to call a simple old fashion asmx webservice webthod that returns a single value as a function return result. But what if I want to return multiple output params? My current approach is to separate the params by a dividing character and parse them on teh client. Is there a better way.
Here's how I return a single function result. How do I return multiple output values?
<asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server">

I have an ajax call on a page which POSTS data: longitude and latitude. In the Javascript the two variables I pass in "posLong" and "posLat" are both decimals, something like: 50.81472239. When I do request.form in my .aspx.vb page which I've called, the value has now been rounded to 51.

We're trying to implement functionality that intercepts, inspects, and alters if needed data in the Request.QueryString and Request.Form collections.
Since Request.QueryString and Request.Form are readonly, is it possible to use a HttpModule to do this without Reflection or Response.Redirect?
We're thinking that we can construct a new HttpRequest, and replace the original one. Would there be any implications in doing this?
I know mocking this object is impossible without using HttpRequestWrapper, but wasn't sure whether ASP.NET sets other things beyond the constructor.

I am creating a Payment request form that my customers are going to fill out and submit so they get paid I would classifi it as an invoice. Does any one have any examples or point me to a good place to read about creating this type of form and the database tables to support the application?
The form will basically have some fields they will fill in for the header then in the related stuf come charge amounts with there types aka partnumbers of sorts and also the ablity to put in there own types / aka partnumbers and there amounts. I wont be housing any amounts they will supply all the information of payment amounts and types.

I'm trying to send a string of XML as part of the query string. Normally I'd POST this XML but I'm sending it to a 3rd party system that I can't POST stuff to. So, as it goes, I need the 3rd party system to request the services of one of the pages in my system. (explanation: the 3rd party system produces PDFs of my web pages. I give it a URL to my page, and it PDF's that page. So, the XML file contains data that I need to generate the page) Anyway, I'm getting my query string as follows:
string data = Server.UrlEncode(xmlSnippet.ToString());
string sFullUrl = urlString + "?data=" + data;
I give the 3rd pary system this URL, and it calls my page.. except the request doesn't reach the page. It's failing into the Application_Error handler with this message:
"A potentially dangerous Request.QueryString value was detected from the client (data=[my XML data])" As I know the data I'm sending is safe, is there any way I can make this work?

It seems the following markup is rendered differently in Firefox and Chrome, and I'm not sure how to prevent it:
<%= HttpUtility.UrlEncode("+") %>
<%= "<a href='#' name='" + HttpUtility.UrlEncode("+") + "'>stuff</a>"%>
In Firefox it looks like:
%2b<a name="+" href="#">stuff</a>
In Chrome it looks like:
%2b<a name="%2b" href="#">stuff</a>
Is there a way around it?

if the code below would achieve what I want, which is: Check if the query parameters 'return_path' and/or 'user_state' are present in the query string, and if so append them to the query string of the redirect URI. As I'm not a .NET dev and don't have a server to test this on, I was hoping someone could give me some feedback.
ArrayList vars = new ArrayList();
vars.Add("return_path");
vars.Add("user_state");[code].....

i need to pass my Request.Form as a parameter, but first i have to add some key/value pairs to it. I get the exception that the Collection is readonly.
I've tried:
System.Collections.Specialized.NameValueCollection myform = Request.Form;
and i get the same error.
and i've tried:
foreach(KeyValuePair<string, string> pair in Request.Form)
{
Response.Write(Convert.ToString(pair.Key) + " - " + Convert.ToString(pair.Value) + "<br />");
}
to test if i can pass it one by one to another dictionary, but i get:
System.InvalidCastException: Specified cast is not valid.

I have an ASP.Net site (happens to be MVC, but that's not relevant here) with a few pages I'd like cached really well.
Specifically I'd like to achieve:
output cached on the server for 2 hours.if the file content on the server changes, that output cache should be flushed for that page
cached in the browser for 10 minutes (i.e. don't even ask the server if it's that fresh)when the browser does make an actual subsequent request, I'd like it to use etags, so that the server can return a 304 if not modified.
(note - time values above are indicative examples only)
1) and 2) I can achieve by Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.Server)
I know 3) can be achieved by using max-age and cache-control:private
I can emit etags with Response.Cache.SetETagFromFileDependencies();
but I can't seem to get all of these things to work together. Here's what I have:
Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.ServerAndPrivate);
Response.Cache.SetRevalidation(HttpCacheRevalidation.AllCaches);
Response.Cache.SetETagFromFileDependencies();
Response.Cache.SetValidUntilExpires(true);
Response.Cache.SetMaxAge(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(60 * 10));
In particular:
can browsers do both 3) and 4) like that? When Firefox issues a new request after it expires in the local cache, it does indeed send the etag the server responded with before, but I get a 200 response.setting the variables like above, where would I set the duration of the output caching?

I have an ActionResult method that loads a user-selected project. When the user makes a selection from a select html element, the id is passed in and loads the project. This works fine. The user can also submit the form, which saves certain information and then calls a RedirectToAction that passes the project id back into the load method. This is where the problem occurs. Here's the relevant code:
[Code]....
The problem is that the value of 'projectID_DDL' is null when the redirect occurs. I'm aware that during a form post that variable is automatically mapped to the name of the html element, so my first question is if that precludes referring to the parameter name as anything else, even in code. In regular methods, it doesn't matter what you call the variable, provided it's the correct type for the parameter it corresponds to, but ActionResult methods might differ. My second question is about break points. In order to test that the value of 'projectID_DDL' is what I passed in, I set a break point. It was never hit. I even tried adding a line before the return View statement, thinking perhaps that the return View statement threw the exception, and so its breakpoint wasn't being hit. This didn't work, either.

On a windows 2008 web server, I get the following error whenever posting a form containing html tags in textboxes:
A potentially dangerous Request.Form value was detected from the client (widget$txtText="
This is a common error and you fix it by either doing Page ValidateRequest = false or in the web.config with pages validaterequest = false. However, on this specific server, it completely ignores the validaterequest = false and throws this exception anyway. Has anyone seen this behavior before and know what else I can do to prevent this error? I've seen it in 2 web apps now on the same server, it's really weird.

I am building a DropDownList control dynamically. Constraining this discussion to within just the OnInit() method / state in the asp.net lifecycle, is the only way to see the dropdownlist's posted value to look at the Request.Form NameValueCollection? I m aware that the dropdownlist's viewstate is restored by the time OnLoad() is reached, but I need it's value before then (im pretty sure LoadViewState($object) is of no use?)
