Architecture :: Extending The Screen / Table With Validation And Bisiness Logic?

Jun 17, 2010

I have a typical design problem, pls give me your ideas. We are developing a ASP.NET application and my clients wants to add new fields on the screen at runtime (we have more than 100 screens). Fields which may not be in the table, and bind to a newly created table (dynamically), add validations and business logic to it. My though is to create a separate table to allow extending the existing tables, but not sure how I can link the business logic, validations to it. Also the reporting part.

C# - Sharing Domain Logic Between Similar Classes In Architecture?

Mar 24, 2011

My MVC ASP.NET web application is split up like this:

Web Application Layer Views

[Code]....

Now, I have a view in the database called "EquipmentWithCableDetails", which contains additional useful information with the equipment details - so I create a class to model that view (in order to be able to read from it). In the code I have that works with that new class, I want to display the EquipmentDescription - but that property only exists on the Equipment class.

Architecture - Removing Session Calls From Business Logic?

Feb 4, 2011

I've inherited an asp.net web solution, which has business logic and data calls as seperate assemblies. In the business layer there are a small number of calls to get/set HttpContext session values. I've looked around for an example that will allow me to abstract this away from the business logic as I'd like to be able to reuse these assemblies in non-web projects, could anyone please give me an example of the best way to do this. I was thinking of some sort of session factory that will obtain values from some sort of persistant store depending on the usage scenario but I'm new to architecture really and would appreciate a pointer or two.

MVC :: Buttons Can Specify That They Do Not Cause Validation Logic To Run?

Jan 7, 2010

Does anybody know how to implement this new feature of the MVC 2 RC?

Here is verbatim what ASP.NET MVC 2 Release Candidate Release Notes says:

"...Buttons in a form can specify that they do not cause validation logic to run. The default is that every button in a form causes validation logic to run, and if validation fails, the validation logic blocks submission of the form. Enabling validation selectively for buttons lets you create forms .

MVC :: Using DataAnnotations As Well As Server-side Validation Logic?

Apr 6, 2010

I'm using DataAnnotations as well as server-side validation logic.

Is there a way to show DataAnnotation's client-side validation errors in the ValidationSummary, as it shows when returning from server validation?

I know I can use ValidateMessage and ValidateMessageFor next to elements, but the spacial design of the form I'm working with doesn't allow for anything other than highlighting the HTML element, however, I would still like to have a message saying what's wrong.

If I place ValidateFor's alongside ValidationSummary in order to mimic a ValidationSummary during client-side validation, they both appear when returning from a failed server side validation.

Architecture :: Data Access Layer And Business Logic Layer?

Jun 24, 2010

I am building a web site following the tutorials on asp.net. I am using dataset as data access lay, and writing classes to access the dataset. But the example is just basic ideas, how do I retrieve individual table column value in the business layer?For example, if I have a table called Product, I only want to find out what is the product name by product id. I did this in my ProductBLL:

public ProductBLL
{
public int GetProductName(string productId)
{
ProductDataSet.ProductDataTable prodData = Adapter.GetProductById(productId);
[code]...

Is there a better way, or am I doing this correctly? Can anybody give me a reference to a more complicated business logic model?

Setting A Default Value -- Presentation Logic Or Business Logic?

Jun 18, 2010

I was wondering if setting a default value for a SelectList is considered to be presentation logic or business logic? For example, if a requirement is that an Employee cannot be saved without a Location, but 99% of the time the location that would be selected is a particular item -- say Atlanta. Because of this, the location SelectList should be defaulted to Atlanta when ever a entry screen for a new employee is displayed. Should I be defaulting the location in the model or in the view-model? One thing I realized is that the unit tests become awkward because in both cases, I'd be forced to test against a location that will always be present in production but I cannot create a unit test with my own test dataunless "Atlanta" was in the set of locations being used in the test.

Visual Studio :: Adding A Validation Control Screen Flashed Blown Up To About 100x?

Jan 20, 2010

I am coding a website with a masterpage, and several aspx pages.While working with one of the ages today,I was adding a validation control to one of the controls on my page.As soon as I added the control, the screen flashed, and every image on the screen got blown up to about 100x is normal size. Every image! Even those on the Masterpage which wasn't even currently open. The images are also that very same size runtime.I don't think I've done anything permanent, I feel likeperhaps it's just a setting,however I can't find anything that has any control over the image size when viewing them.

C# - Get Html Table Width To Fit Screen Using Literal .net Control?

Feb 24, 2011

I'm building a html table dynamically in an ASP.NET code behind file using C#. I basically loop through a set of data which is an unknown number of records and split a string containing all the values to make the required number of tds. I display the html by assigning it to an asp:Literal control. However I can't get the table to fit the screen - the browser is adding a horizontal scroll bar and the full table is well off the screen. I tried in IE 8 and FF 3.6.13. Most things I've read online about it say to set the width to 100%. I'm doing this but it's having no effect.

<div id="paging">
<asp:Button ID="btnPrev" runat="server" Text="Prev" CssClass="niceInput" onclick="btnPrev_Click" Enabled="False" />
<asp:Button ID="btnNext" runat="server" Text="Next" CssClass="niceInput" onclick="btnNext_Click" Enabled="False" />

Architecture :: Data Validation In Repository Pattern?

Dec 21, 2010

I am currently using the 3-tier Repository pattern in my application. Actually it's the first time for me to implement a design pattern at all! i used to put all my code in the so called now presentation layer.

i want to implement data validation, for example, password should not be more than 10 characters and have to contain special characters. Should i put this code in the data access layer? but my data access layer contains methods that take the DTO as a parameter for example

[Code]....

and the same is for other CRUD operations (DELETE and UPDATE), so implementing such validation on the DAL would make me duplicate the code in each and every method that accepts the DataObject as a paramter. Same holds for the business logic layer where i am using it as a proxy between the presentation and the data access layers.

Eventually it has to use the same Data Objects as parameters. This only leaves me with one option which is to do the validation on the Data Object part. But i think this is not the essence of the respository pattern which states that the Data object class should only be a "container" class with no behavior.

Architecture :: Validation, Service Layers And Testing?

Dec 23, 2010

I have a quick question in regards to testing my validation. I have been looking through a few MVC examples and have noticed the 'Validating with a Service Layer' tutorial which is pretty nice. It discusses how to abstract your code out etc..My question is, that they have validation occuring in the service layer, if errors occur, the error + message then gets added to a model state dictionary.Now i want to test my model to make sure my business rules are being applied to it, but with this approach, for starters, the Validation method is not in the interface. Now, if the validation method was in the interface, during testing you would have to re-implement the validation on the testing side.Am i missing somthing? Where should your validation code go? I feel like it should go in the model, but then i have to track the errors on the model side.

Architecture :: Data Validation In A 3 Tier Application?

Aug 31, 2010

Say you have a form designed in Silverlight(Front end)-Asp.NEt(business layer)-SQl(bakcend)Should data validation occur on all 3 layers or just the presentation layer or a combination of the front end with the other 2 e.g. validating an email address? I'm trying to undestand as to why if data has been validated on the presentation why further data validation would be necessary especially if there would be large amounts of data being validated and this could potentially slow down database transactions?

While running the page, the reportviewer run the report and is not showing the data on the screen. It shows the blank screen. But If I export the data to execl or world it is showing the data. Also the page numbers in the reportviewer showing the total pages available in the navigation bar. I am sure the report is running and bringing the data to the screen but not showing it.

MVC :: Login Page In App Hosted On IIS 7 Integrated Mode - Its Never Getting Redirected To The Home Screen Or Invalid Login Screen

May 19, 2010

I have created my first MVC application. I am using forms authenticataion. I have created a custom action filter MyAppAuthorizationFilter which inherits from AuthorizeFilter. Inside this filter I'm authenticating the user credentials by checking them against a database table (by overriding OnAuthorize method). If the user is not authenticated, I am redirecting the users to a login page (which is view of LoginController). I am using this filter agaginst my main controller so that all actions in this filter will execute only if the user is authenticated.

I do not have any problem when I use the asp.net development server (shipped with Visual Studio). But when I deploy the app to our IIS7 server, I can see the login screen when I access the default url, but after entering the credentials (both correct and incorrect) and posting back the Login page, it stays on the Login page (clears the pwd, but not the username). Its never getting redirected to the home screen or invalid login screen.

IIS 7 server has .net framework 3.5SP1, but no MVC. So I deployed the System.Web.Mvc dll in the bin folder.

Here's my Code (I've omitted the views and models as they are not needed here):

[MyAppAuthorizationFilter]
public class MainController : Controller
{
//
// GET: / [code]......

Now if I from another page run the code in the hyperlink to navigate to this page2 where I have the above tag. The page will scroll down to this tag automatically where this tag will be at the TOP of the screen.

My question now is if it is instead possible to scroll to the position where you have this tag at the BOTTOM of the screen instead ?
