Architecture :: Use Membership Functionality Without Username / Password?

Oct 28, 2010

1. I want to use membership functionality without username/password

instead I want to use this functionality based on tracked IP's. Is it possible

Is it a good idea? I want to use my application on all famous mobile platforms and desktops mac/win

2. Is it hard (or is it good idea) to have user info stored into database for specific amount of time based on IP instead of persistent cookies? (I mean user can close browser, etc. Usually this time will be 1 hour)

Security :: Migrating Existing Cleat Text Users Password To Hashed Password Membership Provider?

Sep 9, 2010

I had been trying to solve this but there is a hidden key i wish someone point me to.

I had a simple membership database with users in first the Membership Provider configured for clear password to retrieve the original password .

Now a new requirement say that the password must be hashed and reset .

I configure the Membership password to hash , and Implemented the Reset Password Module.

My problem is as follow.

If the user is new registered user with the new configuration the password and the security answer is hashed.

also when I go and reset the password it continue to be hashed.

Now I thought that with new configuration if any previous user with clear text configuration , If he use the password Reset module , because my configuration now is hashed , I expected that the new password and security answer will be hashed . what happen is old user continue in clear text even if the configuration is hashed. so If I had new users everything is fine.

old users Membership Provider somehow know they had been stored in clear text and it keep change password and security answer in clear text . If I delete this user and create it , Membership Provider understand that everything will be hashed. I need to know how it know this , I need to migrate users not to delete and recreate users .

Also if there are no solution for that , I wish Microsoft Consider it in future cause it is a real user scenario, that can happen imagine a business system that related to membership user Id , deleting users and recreate them is not a solution .

Old Password Still Working After Password Change In Membership?

Sep 21, 2010

Am using ASP.NET membership authentication in a small website and i just noticed some thing funny during testing. Am trying to enable user to change their login password any time they wish, i dragged a change password control to the form, i changed the password for my test account, but now all passwords are still working.

I can login with the old password as well as the new password with this particular test account. If i try with any other random characters as the new password, i cant successfully login (which OK). But if type the old password, am able to login, if i type the new password, am still able to login, am finding this very strange.

Implementing Forgot Password Functionality In Mvc

Apr 3, 2011

I want to implement a forgot-password feature in asp.net mvc that allows users to reset their password, and have some questions in this regard: Lets say that before allowing users to reset their password, I want to verify some extra information such as their first and last name. This info is not stored by default in the table created by aspnet_regsql. What is the recommended approach to address such issues?

Should I store this kind of info in a separate table, and use table joins to verify OR should i modify the schema of the table generated by aspnet_regsql (how?) so that I don't have to use joins? Do I need to write a custom provider OR would that not be necessary? I have read at places e.g. in this post that instead of emailing a temporary password, an alternative is to email a URL that when clicked allows users to change their password. How is this done? How to ensure that the URL expires after 1 hour?

MVC :: How To Modify Generated Membership Functionality

Mar 25, 2010

I am using ASP.NET MVC2 (and I am new to MVC).

I created a new MVC2 project and use the SqlMembershipProvider and Forms Authentication but am not using Roles (yet). Each user has additional information associated with them (e.g. Company) which is stored in a different table than the aspnet_* membership tables.

I store an additional small piece of information in the authentication cookie (e.g. CompanyId), and create a custom identity object during the AuthenticateRequest event and this custom identity object exposes the CompanyId as a property. Thus, CompanyId is available in controller actions that has been decorated with [Authorize].

When creating a new user, I now want to create this additional user information (e.g. Company) and associate it with the user. I realize there are many different ways to do this but since I am fresh to MVC I am soliciting advice about the best way to do this - I want to do it in the best "ASP.NET MVC way".

One option would be to change the AccountController's Register action and after a successful call to MembershipService.CreateUser(), do the work to create the additional info in the database. Doing it this way does not require any modification to IMembershipService etc.

Another option would be to modify the IMembershipService interface (add a "company" or "companyName" parameter to the CreateUser() method), then modify AccountMembershipService's implementation of CreateUser() and do the work to create the additional info in the database there.

And yet another option would be to leave IMembershipService alone and instead create my own IMyMembershipService and MyAccountMembershipService and use those.

Architecture :: Best Method For Replacing Old I-Frame Functionality?

Feb 11, 2010

I have a contract budget management program where hours to be worked (within various contracts' period-of-performance) are computed. These projected hours are displayedto the employee in a gridview on their timesheet (web program) to be used as a guide for charging hours worked. A new FIO bought well-known accounting software with it's own timesheet function but without the budget function. I'm trying to figure out the best way to present the projected hours on the same web page as the 3rd party timesheet (I don't have control of the latter; it's just a URL). In ASP days I would have built an I-frame. Evidently an earlier version of .Net had <frameset> function but that is obsolete. What is the best way to accomplish my goal?

Send Username And Password To Net Web Service

Dec 21, 2010

I am developing a .net application using Web Services, and the application is consuming them using Spring.Net WebServiceProxyFactory. I need to send to the web service the username and password of the user that is logged in to the application, consuming the web service. Reading some forum post [URL] they seem to refer to an example that used to be in the spring documentation [URL], an example of how using SOAP headers for authentication using the WebServiceExporter and WebServiceProxyFactory, but the link to the file is broken. Do you know a way that I can send the user credentials as a soap header using spring.net? Or any data (for example, a token ID that the web service will use later to get the user credentials).

Security :: How To Force Username And Password

May 20, 2010

I have created a test user/password on my web site. The intent is to have prospective clients login and try out the tool. Instead of telling them the userid/password of the test user, I'd like to tweak the Login wizard.

In the Load event, I was able to specify login1.UserName = "test user"

But when I try to specify the password, I'm told it is a readonly field. How can I 'force' a specific password? Or, how can I call the login event directly and pass the needed values?

Wcf - Store Username And Password Authentication?

Jan 12, 2011

I have a service (WCF) with which my ASP.NET page will communicate. The WCF service has hashed passwords in its data store (a file actually). The WCF service requires the username and the hashed password on every call. Nowm the problem I'm encountering is that if I authenticate the user with forms authentication in ASP.NET, a cookie will be saved in the user's computer after the user is authenticated but I would like to save the username and hashed password too so that the user may able to use the WCF service. Where should this information should be saved so that it is safe and secure? Should I use session variables? If I choose that option that, then should I switch from forms-based authentication and manually authenticate using session variables or use both forms-based autentication for web page access and store the username and hashed password in a session variable? What are the pros and cons of each?
