Binding Data To A GridView From A Object With Child Objects Containing Relevant Fields
Jul 16, 2010
I have a List of complex objects containing other objects within that I give as the data source to a gridview.(currently I'm using BoundFields for the columns). I need to bind data to the columns from the objects within at run time. How can this be done?

have some Objects, lets say Employee and Role defined as below and I have defined relationships in my database that gives me a list of objects say employees and thanks to my framework each employee object also has a Role object linked via the RoleIDID, UserName, Password, Email, RoleIDRoleID, RoleNameSo in code I can do something like this
Employee emp = dataService_GetEmployeeByID(1);
string RoleName = emp.Role.RoleName;
Now here is my problemI can bind any object in a repeater and it works fine for the first level in my relationship
For instance <%# Eval("UserName") %>
But I need to be able to show the details for my child objects as well (Role) so something like this (which does not work)
<%# Eval("Role.RoleName") %>

Is it possible to do data binding on the fields of an object just like in WPF?
Something like this:
<TextBlock Text="{Binding ElementName=lbColor}" />
just for an asp:TextBox element. What I want is that on submit to have the new values inside the binded object and I don't want to manually read and set the values.

I have been reading alot about this and for some reason I am just not able to grasp the concept. Hopefully someone here can enlighten me.As an example situation I have a collection of strongly typed User objects that represent a database table, and some properties that represent its columns: UserID(PK), Username,FirstName,LastName, etc..Here are some of my requirements/goals:1. Users/Objects needs to be bound to the gridview programatically.2. I do not want to update the database right away, I only want the underlying collection to be updated. I would like to call the database update method myself when I am ready.
3. I do not want the primary key stored on the client side.Summary:So I bind a List<Users> to a gridview with the appropriate bound fields set up, I exlude bound fields such as primary key because I don't want it being changed/hacked by the client side. When I edit and update a row it is saved back to the collection of objects. I will iterate through the objects manually at a later time and commit them to database.
Questions:1. Can I cast a gridview row directly back to my object, in the RowUpdating or RowUpdated events? I am assuming I can't... So....2. How can I reference back my original collection if the gridview does not contain a primary key?3. Where do I store my collection, should it be in Session or should I recreate it on each postback?Sorry if any of this is confusing, let me know if you need clarification.

I am using ASP.Net MVC2 and LINQ to SQL. I am using DataAnnotations and model binding in conjunction with a Form/View and its working beautifully well. Loving that.. My view is an "Add new Employee" form that's adding a new "Employee" complex object. Every Employee also has a child complex object called an "Address".
I am using the bound Html helpers in the view, such as Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.NewEmployee.FirstName) for example. Working beautifully well, validating beautifully well both client and server and coming into the controller fully populated and ready to be saved! Exciting.. ModelState.IsValid returns true and I go to save the new Employee.
The Employee is created fine but the system also creates a blank/new Address record in my Addresses table even when the Address fields are blank! How can I prevent any Address from being created, in situations where I ONLY want to create a new Employee with no Address. An example is when the user supplies an existing Address, then I wish to simply set the new Employee's AddressID to that of an existing physical address (I hope that makes sense). But it could apply to any situation where you need to create a new complex object, but you don't wish for LINQ to create any of its child complex objects. I have tried setting NewEmployee.Address = null after it is received in the controller, but even after that, a blank/new Address is still created. Even if I try NewEmployee.Address = SomeExistingAddress, it does correctly link the Employee to the existing Address, but it STILL goes off and creates another redundant new/blank address record! Which is really weird..

I have a "Create New Employee" ASP.Net MVC form. My complex object is an Employee and an Employee has an Address, which is another Complex object. On my View/Form I collect all required values for both the Employee and the Address. I'm using the bound HTML helpers such as: Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.EmployeeAddress.StreetName)
AND
Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.NewEmployee.FirstName)
This is all working beautifully well. Model binding is working like a dream, both server side and client side validation using DataAnnotations is working beautifully well and I am nicely receiving my populated complex objects as expected in the Controller.. Now I'm trying to save.. The Employee should always be newly created, because its an "Add New Employee" form. But sometimes the Address is an existing Address and I don't want to insert another one. Rather, I just want to link the Employee to the existing AddressID of the one that already exists in the database.
So I wrote a nifty GetExistingOrCreateNewAddress(Address PostedAddress) method which works great so I end up with the correct Address to use and link to the about to be saved Employee object. This is all happening in the same DataContext, so no problems there..
BUT even when I link the about to be saved Employee object to an existing Address, on save a new/empty Address row is created in my Addresses table. Even though the newly created Employee does link correctly to the existing Address I told it to! Why is it so??? And how can I save the new Employee without LINQ automatically creating a blank Address for me. Because I'm explicitly specifying an existing Address it should be linked to instead!
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult CreateEmployee(EmployeeDetailsViewModel NewEmployeeDetails)
{
if (ModelState.IsValid)
{
EmployeeRepository ER = new EmployeeeRepository();
// Fetch or Create the appropriate Address object for what has been entered
Address ActualAddress = ER.GetExistingOrCreateNewAddress(NewEmployeeDetails.EnteredAddress);
// Link this Address to the "about to be saved" Employee
NewEmployeeDetails.Employee.Address = ActualAddress;
// Lock it in..
ER.SaveNewEmployee(NewEmployeeDetails.Employee);

I am working on Crystal Reports 8.5 and SQL Server 2000 as backend. I have a stored procedure which has been added to the Crystal Report. So that fields are visible in the Fields object section from where i can drag and drop the fields on the report and display it. But now as they want more fields i have written two select statements for displaying required fields. But these newly added fields are not visible in the Fields object section in the Crystal Reports. I have done verify database, removed and again attached the SP but the problem is not solved.

Backgroud: I'm using NHibernate for my model layer, and I have a HTTP module taking care of instantiating the session at the beginning of each request and cleaning it up at the end of each request (i.e. Session Per Request). In this case, I have two object types:
ParentItem - an object with a bunch of properties and a collection of ChildItems. ChildItem - an object with properties including a DateTime (EffectiveDate) and an unenforced FK pointing to a completely different database. The ChildItem class contains a reference back to the parent as well (many-to-one) While the ParentItem has multiple ChildItems in its collection, I'm only generally interested in the latest ChildItem in the collection.
Desire: Want a databound control (GridView or ListView, I don't care which) that allows me to Add/Edit/Delete ParentItems from my datasource. I also want to have the ability to set a new "latest" ChildItem as part of the edit/update.
Issue: I can't seem to access the underlying DataItem from the GridView/ListView in the OnItemUpdating handler (which isn't unexpected, since the data is now in the viewstate). What I thought I could do would be to load a ParentItem from my session using the ID from the databound control, create a new ChildItem, add it to the ParentItem, and then save the ParentItem. Since NHibernate caches the data, the load should give me a copy from cache (no roundtrip to the DB) and I'd either be doing this before the ParentItem was saved back (thus no changes committed to ParentItem, just to ChildItem) or after (thus the cached version is still the same, and my new object will match the updated version). What I get when I do this (for ParentItemID=1):
a different object with the same identifier value was already associated with the session: 1, of entity:
NameSpace.ParentItem
on the line:
Session.SaveOrUpdate(parentItemInstance);

I have a GridView, and I want Column1 to be equal to datatable data (filled by a SqlDataAdapter). Then I have two other fields by the SqlDataAdapter (first name, last name), and I want to have those two fields combined to form Column2. I have a TemplateField for my GridView that combines the first name and last name with Eval()'s, but the GridView places this combined field TemplateField and puts it as the first column.
How can I do this so that TemplateField can go in between fields that are databound?

I am using TempleteFields for all columns in my GridView. In that columns I am using only some fields for customization but not all.
Is there any performance issue with Databound Fields vs Templete Fields in a GridView...?
Do I need to replace the remaining columns with Databound Columns instead of TempletField columns...?

Consider this abstract class
public abstract class Foo
{
public Injectable Prop {get;set;}
}
i have an application that i want to enhance and simultaneously refactor for simplicity.
I have over 100 classes that call some same stuff (e.g Class Injectable) and i am thinking that this behaviour can be abstracted and set to a base class, and everybody will inherit from this base class so as to remove copy/paste code.
However, i want to avoid copy/paste code in the spring configuration file by defining an Injectable object and then define a child object foreach and every class that inherits from Foo.
I am looking for a way to set the abstract class's properties and then all child elements to automatically get them via configuration. I want to avoid to make the abstract class like this:

Am using datalist to create a kinsd of message board, in the back end am having two tables one for the parent comment , and other for the child comments
The data source is extracted by LINQ to SQL with the load option , so I get everthing when I debug on the code behind , and I can see all the fields each parent comment and the child comments.
the problem is with binding the data on the disply for example all the parent table fildes can be rendred without any problems:
<%# DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "comment1Parent") %>; "showing me the orginal post"
Problem here:
<%# DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "Childcomment") %> is not rendred and I got this error msg:
DataBinding: 'DataAccessLayer.Comment' does not contain a property with the name 'childComment'.
In the debug I navigate to the childComment and this is its HTML visualisar:
new System.Linq.SystemCore_EnumerableDebugView<DataAccessLayer.Comment>(((ASP.usercontrols_comments_ascx)this).Comments)).Items[0]._comments_Replies.entities.items[0].childComment
I tried
<%# DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "_comments_Replies.childcomment")
Same as above error came to me.

I want to be able to update a model and all its collections of child objects in the same view. I have been referred to these examples: http://haacked.com/archive/2008/10/23/model-binding-to-a-list.aspx and http://blog.stevensanderson.com/2010/01/28/editing-a-variable-length-list-aspnet-mvc-2-style/ .
For example, I have an object Consultant, that has a collection of "WorkExperiences". All this is in an Entity Framework model. In the view, the simple properties of the Consultant object is no problem, but the collection I cannot get a textbox to show up for. I tried following the examples in the links above, but it doesn't work. The problem is, in those examples the model is just a list (not an object with a child list property). And also, the model again is an EF model. And for some reason that doesn't seem to work as in those examples.
[Code]....
This stuff with the EditorTemplate works fine in Phil Haack's sample project, which I downloaded to try, but here, with the EF model or whatever the problem is, I don't get any textbox at all. The table in the view is just there as a test, because in the table I do get the rows for WorkExperiences, whether I add an empty WorkExperience object or fill out its properties doesn't matter, the rows show up for each object. But again, no textbox...

I have a class that returns a list of "Category" Objects. I'd like to display them along the left-hand side of the page in a listview (if that's the best way to do it, even).
The category objects have normal attributes. Title, User, NumberOfProjects. I'd like to display both the title and the number of projects in this list.
Not worried about editability right now as we might make that separate (i.e. not in-line in a list view edit mode).
