Forms Data Controls :: Gridview Two Way Binding And Custom Objects?
Nov 24, 2010
I have been reading alot about this and for some reason I am just not able to grasp the concept. Hopefully someone here can enlighten me.As an example situation I have a collection of strongly typed User objects that represent a database table, and some properties that represent its columns: UserID(PK), Username,FirstName,LastName, etc..Here are some of my requirements/goals:1. Users/Objects needs to be bound to the gridview programatically.2. I do not want to update the database right away, I only want the underlying collection to be updated. I would like to call the database update method myself when I am ready.
3. I do not want the primary key stored on the client side.Summary:So I bind a List<Users> to a gridview with the appropriate bound fields set up, I exlude bound fields such as primary key because I don't want it being changed/hacked by the client side. When I edit and update a row it is saved back to the collection of objects. I will iterate through the objects manually at a later time and commit them to database.
Questions:1. Can I cast a gridview row directly back to my object, in the RowUpdating or RowUpdated events? I am assuming I can't... So....2. How can I reference back my original collection if the gridview does not contain a primary key?3. Where do I store my collection, should it be in Session or should I recreate it on each postback?Sorry if any of this is confusing, let me know if you need clarification.

have some Objects, lets say Employee and Role defined as below and I have defined relationships in my database that gives me a list of objects say employees and thanks to my framework each employee object also has a Role object linked via the RoleIDID, UserName, Password, Email, RoleIDRoleID, RoleNameSo in code I can do something like this
Employee emp = dataService_GetEmployeeByID(1);
string RoleName = emp.Role.RoleName;
Now here is my problemI can bind any object in a repeater and it works fine for the first level in my relationship
For instance <%# Eval("UserName") %>
But I need to be able to show the details for my child objects as well (Role) so something like this (which does not work)
<%# Eval("Role.RoleName") %>

I'm working on a project in which we have a database, data layer (entity framework), business layer and web/UI layer.I want to use ASP.NET Dynamic Data for the web layer, but don't want it to access the data layer or database, as I want it to be purely running off business logic, and not directly accessing the data.However, it appears that Dynamic Data only allows Linq-to-SQL or entity framework data sources to be used.Has anyone used it with business-layer objects instead?

I have a gridview with item template and I want the text in that item template label to come from a method in a code behind.
Here is my gridview:
[Code]....
[Code]....
[Code]....
I want to call this method but I'm getting the errors: "
"The best overloaded method match for 'employeepayment.RegTime(string)' has some invalid arguments"
"Argument '1': cannot convert from 'object' to 'string'"
Someone know the answer?. I thought I was right to use Eval.

I want to design a nested gridview with insert, update, delete functionality through custom business objects dynamically inside viewstate.
(Master Gridview)
EmployeeID EmployeeName
1 Ted
(Child Gridview)
ItemID ItemName
1 Keyboard
2 Mouse
2 John
(Child Gridview)
ItemID ItemName
1 PSU
2 GPU
3 Printer
I have done this in the past with datatable/dataviews but they are a real memory hog.
How do I implement Master/Detail functionality with business objects ? What is the alternate to Dataview in master detail/business objects.
I know its a rather broad question but its worth getting started on something =)

I have a List of Customers. Now I want to display these customers in a gridview and that is easy. I just set the datasource and use the databind method of the gridview. (I use template fields). But now I want to display FirstName and LastName of the customer as one column.I am aware of how to use the rowdatabound event to manipulate the gridviewrow's controls, but I am not sure how to gain access to the customer object within this method.So here is some code which of course not works.
protected void grdVirtualCustomers_RowDataBound(object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e)
{
System.Web.UI.WebControls.GridViewRow row = e.Row;
((Label) row.FindControl("lblName").).Text=Customer.FirstName + " " Customer.LastName;
}

I'm creating in my code a list of object which must be displayed later in a table.
In Winforms I'd simply bind the DataGridView to the list, and everything is fine.
However, when I try to set the GridView's data source to the list, nothing happens, and I can't find a way to do this with any of the procided data sources(Such as ObjectDataSource, etc.).

I have a set of dataset with different column retrieved from DB. I need to present the datasets in one GridView (or other ListView etc...) without specifying the column_header. It should present automaticly since the GridView is bind to the DataSet.
In additional, I want this GridView to handle multiple rows edit and update the dataset, idealy, show data in textboxs in initially.How could I set the GridView to edit_model without hardcode column_header and textboxs in 'itemtemplate' or filed.
How could I achieve the bulk edit and update, so that I can assign 'mydataview1.table' to the dataset.

I have a Gridview that displays paged results from a search query. The problem I am having is that the gridview is not displaying all the results returned from the query. For example, I can step through the code and see 6 items returned by the call to GetList(), but only 2 rows get rendered by the gridview after binding.
I am using an ObjectDataSource created in code:
ObjectDataSource ods = new ObjectDataSource();
ods.EnablePaging = true;
ods.TypeName = "Bll.InvestmentProductSvc";
ods.DataObjectTypeName = "Bll.InvestmentProduct";
ods.SelectMethod = "GetList";
ods.SelectCountMethod = "GetListCount";
ods.StartRowIndexParameterName = "PageIndex";
ods.MaximumRowsParameterName = "PageSize";
ods.EnableViewState = false;
ods.SelectParameters.Add (new Parameter("SearchString",TypeCode.String, SearchString));
ods.SelectParameters.Add(new Parameter("PageIndex", TypeCode.Int32));
ods.SelectParameters.Add(new Parameter("PageSize", TypeCode.Int32, gvSearchResults.PageSize.ToString()));
gvSearchResults.DataSource = ods;
gvSearchResults.DataBind();
The Gridview declaration:
<asp:GridView ID="gvSearchResults" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" AllowPaging="true" PageIndex="0" PageSize="50" OnPageIndexChanging="gvSearchResults_PageIndexChanging" PagerSettings-Position="TopAndBottom">
</asp:GridView>
Are there any reasons for the Gridview not to render a row and not to report an error? I have examined the data returned for the 6 items and cannot find any distinctive differences between the 2 rows displayed and the 4 rows not displayed.

I am using ASP.net to retrieve data from a Lotus notes DB using OLEDB connection. I use a ADOrecordset to read the values. When I open the ADo connection, I would like to store each record being read in a custom object and thereby create a collection of custom objects as ADO connection times out when kept open for long.
I then need to iterate throught the collection of custom objects to retrieve the values.
I am using asp.net 2010

I have a dataset which I bind to a gridview for display. Normally, the gridview shows the dataset table column name as the column header and the data is bound vertically - i.e. the dataset table rows are created in a vertical/downward fashion. What I would i like do however in my application is to get the GridView to bind in the horizontal direction. So the data that is bound "moves" towards the right. Before suggesting a repearter or datalist, I also have a requirement to not wrap. I have not been successfull getting the repeater/datalist not to wrap unless you know of a setting you can share.

My message application uses a gridview to display user messages. One colunm determines the priority of the message (high, low or no priority assigned) if the message row is empty put nothing in the row else put a ! in the row (to show high priority). Question is don't I need to bind that colunm and row?
'<%#Bind("something")%>' Image="!" />

I have a GridView bound to a DataTable. The DataTable has a Deleted column that holds a boolean value describing whether the row is logically deleted; I need the row to physically remain in the table. Is there a way to skip over rows whose Deleted columns are set to true in the GridView's onRowDataBound event? The closest I could get is marking the row's visibility property to false, but this does not help me because it throws off paging and the GridView's alternating row color.
