CPU Usage Relative To Number Of Users?
May 1, 2010
My Asp.net application uses 25-30% of the CPU on a test server which has 600 MB Ram on it.
I can see the asp_wb process taking that much percentage of CPU.
This is when I am testing using one user.
How many users can the server afford then without falling over?
Is there a relationship between the CPU Usage and number of user aka if there are 2 users my application will sky rocket to 60% of memory usage?

I have an application that does LDAP authentication. The authentication is done on the code behind page of my Login.aspx page. Once the user passes LDAP authentication, a cookie is set and I redirect:
FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage(UserName.Text, False)
I would like to setup membership in my application and keep track of some user information. But due to company security requirements, I cannot store user passwords on my application. That must stay on the LDAP server only.Is there a way to store users but disable password storage on the aspnet_membership table?

My environment is ASP.Net + IIS 7.0 + Windows Server 2008 + .Net 3.5. I am wondering whether the number of users online and number of active session are the same thing? The other question is, no matter whether they are the same, how to calculate them (i.e. for a given time, what is the number of users online, and related active number of sessions)?

I am working on a website in which more than a thousand users can login at a time and there may be more than 50000 total users. I am worried about the performance of the application in case of concurrent access.
what is the best way to manage that, so that my application runs without any performance issues.

I have an asp.net 3.5 web application for which the client has requested that the security model allows (a licensing model) restricting the number of simultaneous users logged onto the website. I am not sure how this is achievable - I'm currently controlling membership via the AspNetSqlMembershipProvider.

With performance counter to observe the "Sessions Total", I found the # of session stays the same after users logout. Is this expected behavior in IIS7?
Here is the logout implementation:
Session.Clear();
Session.Abandon();
FormsAuthentication.SignOut();

I would like to know the number of users logged into my ASP.NET 2.0 application.
Points to be considered:
1) Simplest way would be to use Application or Cache object to have the counts on Session start or end. However this would fail if there is a worker process recycle. Wouldn't it?
2) Should't make a difference whether the session is inproc/state server managed/ or SQL server managed.
3) Should preferably be seamless to a web-farm architecture.

I am using ASP.Net + .Net 3.5 + VSTS 2008 + IIS 7.0 + C# to develop a web application. I want to count how many users are online. This is my current implementation,when Session_Start is called, I will increase # of users online by 1;when Session_End is called, I will descrease # of users online by 1.Two quesitons,A Is that implementaiton correct?B. Another question is, I think this method can not track # of users of real time, since when user closes the browser, Session_End will not be called immediately (Session_End will be deferred to be called). Correct?

I have a website that has 10 aspx pages in it, and I'm trying to count how many users are on any one page at a time, and display that number on the web page. I have set it up to use an Application object ("TotalViewers"), and initialize it to 0 in the Application_Start event handler of the global.asax file. My reasoning (probably way off base) is to increment the count on each page load, and then decrement the count on each page unload. The increment part works ok, but when I add the code in the page unload event handler to decrement, it seems that Unload happens before the Page is presented to the client, so the value always stays the same (adds one in page load, subtracts one in page unload).
How else can I track number of users on each page? (simply, becuase I am still a beginner). I have already done some google searching and haven't come up with anything useful.
All my pages are being navigated via a TreeView control.

I need to display how many users are browsing my site. The site is running on iis7, and we are using asp.net 3.5.Is the number of active sessions a good way to go?The number does not need to be very accurate.No history is needed, I just want to know how many users are "online" right now, and display that on the page itself.

In our application, we store the most number of users online. We do this by tracking what page each user is on currently and upon login, delete users who have been inactive for X minutes and then take a count of the users online, overwriting the most number online if this is higher.
How can we change this to track the number of users online over a time period, so we can look at a line graph of the number of users online. I guess we'll need a cron to run every 1/2/5/10/20/30/60 minutes to track the number online? Then how would be store this data, the table would get very large. I would think the likes of Statcounter/Analytics would have a better way of storing this data.

Have written an ASP.Net application. Part of the application deals with being able to view PDFs. The initial PDF viewed acts as an index to access other PDF documents. You click a link in the Index PDF and it jumps to another PDF file. Legal documents, agreements, etc.
This scenario works on some computers and on others it doesn't. I managed to figure out what the problem was. On some of the computers the initial Index PDF was being hosted within the browser and on some other computers it was actually jumping out of the browser and directly into Adobe Acrobat. As soon as the PDF jumps out of the browser and into Acrobat the relative links in the Index PDF stop working because it is hosted client side via Acrobat but the additional PDFs it is trying to access are on the server.
I figured out why some computers stay in browser and why some jump out. There is an option within Acrobat itself that determines this behavior. It is under Edit--> Preferences ----> Display PDF in Browser.
I am in a jam because I am not in control of the PDF documents themselves and how they are written, and I obviously have no control over the options selected in Acrobat on each and every computer. My problem is also compounded by the fact that our firm has just recently purchased a new PDF reader called Nuance that will be pushed out firm wide soon and I don't think it even has the option to have PDFs hosted in browser.
I can get what I need to work if I create the index in HTML, but the problem is I don't write the Indexes and the people who do are not trained in HTML. I can get the people who write the indexes to change from relative links to absolute links, but then I run into the problem of what if we change where we are hosting the PDF files? All the links will break again? I think we are stuck with relative URLs, but how can I make it work?
I am thinking about maybe hosting the PDFs within Silverlight?
