Number Of Session Remains The Same After Users Logout?
Nov 17, 2010
With performance counter to observe the "Sessions Total", I found the # of session stays the same after users logout. Is this expected behavior in IIS7?
Here is the logout implementation:
Session.Clear();
Session.Abandon();
FormsAuthentication.SignOut();

My environment is ASP.Net + IIS 7.0 + Windows Server 2008 + .Net 3.5. I am wondering whether the number of users online and number of active session are the same thing? The other question is, no matter whether they are the same, how to calculate them (i.e. for a given time, what is the number of users online, and related active number of sessions)?

We have implemented the ASP membership and roles..and we would like to display the users currently logged in and also display the number of users online so we can display that on the page. The list of users woudl only be available to our admins. BUt the number of users will show for everyone.

how can i do this? At the moment a user's session is lost whenever they close the browser, but sites like facebook have a 'keep me logged in' option. How does this work exactly and are there any well known ways to do this in .net? i understand part of the way it works is that they store the username in a cookie.

I'm using an <asp:LoginStatus/> element on my MasterPage to show a "logout" link. How do I run code when the user clicks the logout link? I tried putting the code into Session_End() in Global.asax, but that doesn't seem to get called on logout.

I have a website built in ASP.net 3.5, using WinForms and AjaxToolKit. I have encountered a lost/corrupt session issue while using Internet Explorer 8.
Scenerio:
1 IE8 Browser Open, 1 Tab
--------------------------------------
1. Login, Redirect to Landing, Logout - WORKS AS EXPECTED
2. Login, redirect to Landing, Close Window, Open Window, Logged-in already - WORKS AS EXPECTED (remember me enabled by default in code)
1 IE8 Browser, 2 Tabs
--------------------------------------
1. Login, Redirect to Landing, Open new tab, paste Landing page URL, Landing renders. - WORKS AS EXPECTED
- Logout from Tab 2, Tab 1 logs out after AJAX update. - WORKS AS EXPECTED
- Login from Tab 1, Redirects to Landing, then Redirects back to Login page - ISSUE
[code]...
2. Close Window,Login,Redirect to Landing - WORKS AS EXPECTED
2 IE8 Browser, 1 Tab
--------------------------------------
1. Open 2 IE windows
2. In Window 1, Login, Redirect to Landing, then Redirects back to Login. - ISSUE
- Window 2 Paste Landing page URL, Landing page renders - ISSUE, STRANGLY NOW WORKS
[code]...
This issue seems to only happen when I have multiple tabs open,or multiple rwssers open.Firefox and Chrome does not reproduce this issue and works as expected.How do I make sure the Cookie/Session is being handle correctly in IE8?

Is there room for issue in the following code in terms of multiple users of the same web application? I mean, I know that a purely static string will be shared across all sessions for a single ASP.NET application, but since this explicitly refers to the Current.Session, even though it is static it seems like it would always refer to the session instance of the "current user." But an error is happening that could be explained by everyone sharing the current value of Mode and thus the most recent change overwriting everyone else's mode value. (As a background: This string is in a Helpers class that is used throughout the application. I do not want to make references to Session["Mode"] throughout the application and do not want to have to pass Session["Mode"] in every method call from an aspx.cs page.)
public static string Mode
{
get
{
var value = HttpContext.Current.Session["Mode"];
return (value ?? string.Empty).ToString();
}
set
{
HttpContext.Current.Session["Mode"] = value;
}
}

My Asp.net application uses 25-30% of the CPU on a test server which has 600 MB Ram on it.
I can see the asp_wb process taking that much percentage of CPU.
This is when I am testing using one user.
How many users can the server afford then without falling over?
Is there a relationship between the CPU Usage and number of user aka if there are 2 users my application will sky rocket to 60% of memory usage?

I am working on a website in which more than a thousand users can login at a time and there may be more than 50000 total users. I am worried about the performance of the application in case of concurrent access.
what is the best way to manage that, so that my application runs without any performance issues.
