Visual Studio :: Web Service - There Is An Error Downloading *.asmx . The Request Failed With An Empty Response?

May 14, 2008

I have written a web service in visual studio 2005 and it works perfectly on my local machine. However, when I publish it on a web server, and try to access it from visual studio using Add web reference in a project, I can see the web service, but VS gives an error -

" There is an error downloading *.asmx . The request failed with an empty response"

Due to this, I am not able to add a web reference for the web service in my application. Ironically, the same call from a visual studio 2008 works perfectly. (I cannot use VS2008 though, I was just testing through my options).

Error For Failed Request Tracing: "a Failed Request Trace For This Content Already Exists"

Dec 17, 2010

I am trying to add Failed Request Tracing to my IIS 7/ASP.NET server.

First, I create failed request tracing for "all content, error codes 400-999" because want to save all errors.

Then, I try to create a trace for "all content, time: 5 seconds" because I want to trace all "long" requests. However, IIS 7 gives me an error: "A failed request trace for this content already exists".How can I add this second trace for all content that takes > 5 seconds?

Configuration :: Request For The Permission Of Type System.Web.AspNetHosting Permission Failed After Is Reset

Feb 23, 2009

This error has been really driving me nuts as it makes no sense as to why it would start doing this.

Short Description
I build the site out to the web server, it builds fine and runs fine until the worker process resets (an IISRESET will cause it), it then will give the "Request for the permission of type System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission failed" on any page that uses Microsoft's ADFS / Single Sign On. Other pages build and work just fine, just SSO pages fail.

We have a small web farm. The sites source files use to be pointed to a share on our file server but we've had far too many problems keeping that stable (things I won't go into here). I've just moved the files to a local directory on the C: drive of the servers and right now, just have one server set as active in Network Load Balancing. Everything ran fine from the file server, but we get the above problem after the worker process resets. Simply putting a text file in the BIN directory of the site and deleting it (causing a local re-compile) fix's the problem. I'm a a HUGE loss for why this is happening.

WCF / ASMX :: Accessing Response Of HttpWebRequest, Even When Request Returns 500 Internal Server Error

Oct 22, 2010

Hoping someone can point me to a solution, haven't been able to find one yet.

I'm using the standard way for send HttpWebRequest

As you can see from Fiddler/SOAPUI it does return the SOAP fault, however using HttpWebRequest i can't capture the response.

Returning 500 triggers my exception handling and Capturing the WebException doesn't expose the response.

Does anyone know how to capture this response xml in the case of 500 Internal Server Errors.

AJAX :: AsyncFileUpload - Server Response Error - Maximum Request Length Exceeded

May 6, 2010

When the user tries to upload a file with a size more than 4 MB, the AsyncFileUpload control gives a Confirmation alert (with "OK"/"Cancel" button) with the following message "Server Response error: Maximum Request Lengh Exceeded". But when the User clicks the "OK" button a new window popups and shows the server error and on clicking the cancel button the AsyncFileUpload background color turns red. Here I am not sure why the control is showing a Confirmation alert instead of a simple alert message. Is it possible to change the Confirmation alert with the simple alert message? Basically I don't want the popup window to show the server error as it is happening currently. Also, is there a better way to handle the file size error and show apporiate error message to the users?

Accessing IIS's Request Handling Pipeline To Inject A Request And Get The HTML Response?

Dec 9, 2010

Is it at all possible to inject a request into IIS for a page, have IIS and ASP.Net handle it as normal, but get the response as html handed back to me programmatically?

Yes, I know that I could connect to port 80 using WebRequest and WebResponse, but that becomes difficult if you are accessing the IIS server from the same physical machine (loopback security controls et al).

Basically, I want to inject the request (eg for [URL]) between the points at which IIS would normally talk to the browser, and the point at which it would route it to the correct ASP.Net application, and get a response back from IIS between the points at which ASP.Net/IIS applies the httpfilters and hands the html back to the browser.

I'm predominantly working with IIS7 so if there is a solution that works just for IIS7 then thats not an issue.

Configuration :: IIS 6.0 MVC 2 Web Site SQL Server 2005 Login Failed?

Dec 22, 2010

I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 web site that runs okay on my local machine. The first page that comes up uses data from a SQL Server 2005 database that is on a separate machine.

When I deploy the website to an IIS 6.0 web server and try to open the website in a browser on the web server desktop I get the following:

Server Error in '/AutoDoc' Application.

Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

Source Error:

Line 27: </div>

Line 28:

Line 29: <% Html.RenderAction("GenreMenu", "DocStore"); %>

Line 30:

Line 31: <div>

Source File: c:InetpubAutoDocAutoDocViewsSharedSite.Master Line:

Stack Trace: [SqlException (0x80131904): Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.]
There are so many ways to approach this that IM a little lost in the forest. What is the best way to address giving the hosting web server access to the database server? Or should I say give the web site access to the specific database?

Configuration :: 2.0 Website Failed In IIS Windows Server 2003 R2

Mar 30, 2011

when I deploy a website in IIS Windows Server 2003 R2 . First time deploy, it seemed no problem at all (fyi, the one who deploy for the first time is not me, but my friend) but after one or two days this problem occur. I can't browse from IIS and Internet Explorer. In Internet Explorer the page display:

"Internet Explorer cannot display the website." The worse, no error log data ever produced in Application category in Event Viewer.

I've tried change the address from localhost to but the response is still the same. I even tried access just localhost alone. It should display the default homepage from IIS but the response is still the same too. I've checked IIS' Web Service Extension, the Active Server Pages and ASP.NET 2.0 are set to allowed. I also have tried make a virtual directory with just index.html inside and the response is still the same.

FYI: The server seems run in 64 bit (HP Proliant server). The website I build only used ASP.NET Ajax 1.0 and Crystal Report for VS 2005. From the server, I can access the internet but not the localhost.

How To Return A Pdf From A Web Request In .NET

Jan 13, 2010

Simply put, I'd like someone to be able to click a link, and get a one-time-use pdf. We have the library to create PDF files, so that's not an issue.

We could generate a link to an aspx page, have that page generate the pdf, save the pdf to the filesystem, and then Response.Redirect to the saved pdf. Then we'd somehow have to keep track of and clean up the PDF file.

Since we don't ever need to keep this data, what I'd like to do instead, if possible, is to have the aspx page generate the pdf, and serve it directly back as a response to the original request. Is this possible?

(In our case, we're using C#, and we want to serve a pdf back, but it seems like any solution would probably work for various .NET languages and returned filetypes.)
