WCF / ASMX :: Accessing Response Of HttpWebRequest, Even When Request Returns 500 Internal Server Error
Oct 22, 2010
Hoping someone can point me to a solution, haven't been able to find one yet.
I'm using the standard way for send HttpWebRequest
[Code]....
As you can see from Fiddler/SOAPUI it does return the SOAP fault, however using HttpWebRequest i can't capture the response.
Returning 500 triggers my exception handling and Capturing the WebException doesn't expose the response.
Does anyone know how to capture this response xml in the case of 500 Internal Server Errors.

why I'm getting this error? I just re-created (not migrated) my app that was in ASP.NET 1.1 to ASP.NET 2.0. Whole app works perfectly. The only problem I'm getting with this piece of code for the Web Services. I'm running both versions at the same time side-by-side and it works fine in 1.1 and doesn't work in 2.0.
URLName = Context.Request.Url.Segments
URLName0 = URLName(0)
URLName1 = URLName(1)
URLName2 = URLName(2)
URLHost = Request.UserHostName
URLStr = "http://" & URLHost & URLName0 & URLName1 &
"SomePage.aspx?" & "SectionID=" & SectionID
' Create a 'WebRequest' object with the specified url
Dim myWebRequest As WebRequest =
CType(WebRequest.Create(URLStr), WebRequest)
' Send the 'WebRequest' and wait for response.
Dim myWebResponse As WebResponse =
CType(myWebRequest.GetResponse(), WebResponse)
Bam! Error! The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error.

I was given a new Win 7 machine for development and converted our project to it. Everything is working fine except posting a an XML from to localhost. I'm getting the famous (500) Internal Server Error. (previous machine was Vista...) I had also upgraded from VS2008 to VS2010.
There is nothing in the event log, and the IIS log shows that the web server does get the hit: 2010-09-15 15:03:13 W3SVC1 MYCOMPUTER ::1 POST /xml/MRPImport.asmx/UploadForecast - 81 - ::1 HTTP/1.1 - - - localhost:81 500 0 0 280
Below is the code that was working perfectly fine until the upgrade.
Dim oWeb As New System.Net.WebClient()
oWeb.Headers.Add("Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded")
Dim bytArguments As Byte() = System.Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(strXMLData)
Dim bytRetData As Byte() = oWeb.UploadData(ToURL, "POST", bytArguments)

I am currently writing a C# web service which has several methods, one of which has to receive HTTP POST requests. The first thing i have done is alter the web.config file in the web service project as below.
[code]....
But when i run this i get "The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error". If i remove the parameter, by removing the stringbuilder and byte code, as well as having no parameter in the web service, it works. So it is obviously a problem with the parameters. I actually want to send more data, and was using a string[] parameter in the web service, but this also failed.

Im trying to send some xml inside a soap request to a webservice using the HttpWebRequest class. I know this isnt the best way, but my hands are tied by company policy so i have to do it this way. My webmethod has an input parameter "SourceXML" so my soap request has this node
<SourceXML></SourceXML>
I need to insert the xml in this node but whenver I insert it and try to send it to my web method I get an error "400 bad request"
Is this even possible ? I need to insert the xml as a string literal and read it in the web method

Is it at all possible to inject a request into IIS for a page, have IIS and ASP.Net handle it as normal, but get the response as html handed back to me programmatically?
Yes, I know that I could connect to port 80 using WebRequest and WebResponse, but that becomes difficult if you are accessing the IIS server from the same physical machine (loopback security controls et al).
Basically, I want to inject the request (eg for [URL]) between the points at which IIS would normally talk to the browser, and the point at which it would route it to the correct ASP.Net application, and get a response back from IIS between the points at which ASP.Net/IIS applies the httpfilters and hands the html back to the browser.
I'm predominantly working with IIS7 so if there is a solution that works just for IIS7 then thats not an issue.

When the user tries to upload a file with a size more than 4 MB, the AsyncFileUpload control gives a Confirmation alert (with "OK"/"Cancel" button) with the following message "Server Response error: Maximum Request Lengh Exceeded". But when the User clicks the "OK" button a new window popups and shows the server error and on clicking the cancel button the AsyncFileUpload background color turns red. Here I am not sure why the control is showing a Confirmation alert instead of a simple alert message. Is it possible to change the Confirmation alert with the simple alert message? Basically I don't want the popup window to show the server error as it is happening currently. Also, is there a better way to handle the file size error and show apporiate error message to the users?

I'm working on an external web site (in DMZ) that needs to get data from our internal production database.
All of the designs that I have come up with are rejected because the network department will not allow a connection of any sort (WCF, Oracle, etc.) to come inside from the DMZ.
The suggestions that have come from the networking side generally fall under two categories -
1) Export the required data to a server in the DMZ and export modified/inserted records eventually somehow, or
2) Poll from inside, continually asking a service in the DMZ whether it has any requests that need serviced.
I'm averse to suggestion 1 because I don't like the idea of a database sitting in the DMZ. Option 2 seems like a ridiculous amount of extra complication for the nature of what's being done.
Are these the only legitimate solutions? Is there an obvious solution I'm missing? Is the "No connections in from DMZ" decree practical?
Edit: One line I'm constantly hearing is that "no large company allows a web site to connect inside to get live production data. That's why they send confirmation emails". Is that really how it works?

I have an application that is using a traditional web reference (not WCF service reference). I'd like to capture the request and response SOAP envelopes being processed for my referenced service (under the hood). I know how to do this with custom behavior using WCF, but how do I do this using a traditional web reference?

I have a wcf service that randomly begins to fail when requesting the autogenerated javascript that wcf supports making. But I have no luck tracking down why. The js thing is part of the wcf featureset, so I dont know how it can suddenly begin to fail and be unable to work until IIS is recycled.
The http log gives me:
2010-06-10 09:11:49 W3SVC2095255988 myip GET /path/myservice.svc/js _=1276161113900 80 - ip browser 500 0 0
So its an error 500, and that is about the only thing I can figure out. The event log contains no information.
Requests to /path/myservice.svc works just fine. After recycling IIS it works again, and some days later it begins to fail until I recycle IIS.
<service
name="path.myservice"
behaviorConfiguration="b">
<endpoint
address=""
behaviorConfiguration="eb"
binding="webHttpBinding"
contract="path.Imyservice" />
</service>
...
<endpointBehaviors>
<behavior name="eb">
<enableWebScript />
</behavior>
</endpointBehaviors>
<serviceBehaviors>
<behavior name="b">
<dataContractSerializer maxItemsInObjectGraph="2147483647" />
<serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="true" />
<serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="true" />
</behavior>
</serviceBehaviors>
I dont see any problems in the web.config settings either.
Edit:
Just to make it clear - It is the generation of javascript that fails, my code is never invoked. Calls to the service works just fine.

I have a WCF client test harness where I'm using a "client message inspector" endpoint behavior to "pick off" raw requests and response messages going to and from a service and save them for later display in the UI.
This works great, except for the use case where invalid credentials are passed (Basic Authentication). The server returns an HTTP 401 along with a SOAP fault in the body containing details of what happened. I have no control over the service, so this behavior cannot be changed.
Because the HTTP 401 is returned as a WebException, my message inspector never fires and I can't get to the raw response. This exception eventually gets to the UI in the form a MessageSecurityException.
Is there any way to suppress this so the message inspector's AfterReceiveReply still fires? or is there somewhere else I can access the entire raw response?

In IIS we have a virtual directory (named as "Documents") with in application virtual directory (named as "Reference") that points to an shared folder.All the files with in the "Documents" folder are listed and opened by the user (by clicking on the file name) with in the application
"Reference" application runs under an application pool. This application pool is configured to run with an Active directory account. This AD account has been granted write and modify permissions on the shared folder that contains the html files.
When user tries to open any of the html file located with in the shared location from the application following error is thrown.
System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error
I tried to browse to the location manually and I can see the required files there.
These files where accessible from our application until yesterday. But we started encountering this error from today.
Is there any IIS settings that needs to be modified?

I have just installed IIS manager version 6.1 build 7600 and visual studio 2010 (latest additions of both).
I have followed all the instructions and given the correct permisions ect for IIS to work with my directory. I have a helloworld website that has worked via the localhost server many times, but almost hourly something happens to the settings in IIS and it starts throwing errors.
The current error copied below. Basically I am wondering a few things...
1. Why does my IIS constantly do something so that it works one minute and then it wont the next (this is with an identical helloworld.htm file so I know it is not something I am doing with the file that is messing it up).

I am currently trying to setup our website on a windows 2008 R2 64bit machine without much success. When I try to run the website I get the error detailed below. This only happens when I run the site under .NET 4. It works when I run it under .NET 2.
I have also tried going to a test aspx page to see what happens and it also give me the same error so it is obviously something to do with .NET 4 or the way I have it set up. I am thinking it might be a permissions thing but I am not sure what permissions should be set where. Please note this is the full version of .NET 4. The error I keep getting is:

I'm very new to ASP and have been writing a site which has been working fine both in development and on my production server.
However I added some reports to my site and now it works fine when I run debug on my local machine, but when I package the solution and move it onto my production server I get:
HTTP Error 500.23 - Internal Server Error
An ASP.NET setting has been detected that does not apply in Integrated managed pipeline mode.
I'm suing server 2008 STD X64 with IIS7. I've made sure all my windows updates are done.
I've no idea whats causing this. I've tried removing the pages with reports on and I still get the same issue.
