Configuration :: Slow Performance With Offshore Hosting - Does Distance Between Servers And DBs Matter
Sep 7, 2010
I just had to moved a site of mine from a hosting service here in the states to an offshore host located in Malaysia. My database is still located on the east coast of north america and I am wondering if the distance between the database and the file system might be to blame for slow load times or if moving my database as well would be a waste of time.

it stops only when page post. i can see the processbar on browser's statusbar it stop for long time 40 to 60 seconds and after that i fire same event now process complets within 2 to 5 seconds

we host the web application on a server and the structure is..
Root
Module1
page1.aspx
Module2
page4.aspx
Temp
archivedImages
image1 image2
The temp folder size is increased every month as we manually add images.
Except the Temp folder every page is requested from the browser...
We dont use the Temp folder for any other purpose other than archive.
Does this affect the performance of the web application i.e. constant size increase?
how different would it be if we moved the temp to some other location out of the Root?

I have a strange situation on a production server. Connection for asp.net get queued but the CPU is only at 40%. Also the database runs fine at 30% CPU.
Some more history as requested in the comments:
In the peak hours the sites gets around 20,000 visitors an hour.
The site is an asp.net webforms application with a lot of AJAX/POSTs
The site uses a lot of User generated content
We measure the performance of the site with a testpage which does hit the database and the webservices used by the site. This page get served within a second on normal load. Whe define the application as slow when the request takes more than 4 seconds.
From the measurements we can see that the connectiontime is fast, but the processing time is large.
We can't pinpoint the slowresponse the a single request, the site runs fine during normal hours but gets slow during peak hours
We had a problem that the site was CPU bound (aka running at 100%), we fixed that
We also had problems with exceptions maken the appdomain restart, we fixed that do
During peak hours I take a look at the asp.net performance counters. We can see behaviour that we have 600 current connections with 500 queued connections.
At peak times the CPU is around 40% (which makes me the think that it is not CPU bound)
Physical memory is around 60% used
At peak times the DatabaseServer CPU is around 30% (which makes me think it is not Database bound)
My conclusion is that something else is stopping the server from handling the requests faster. Possible suspects:
Deadlocks (!syncblk only gives one lock)
Disk I/O (checked via sysinternals procesexplorer: 3.5 mB/s)
Garbage collection (10~15% during peaks)
Network I/O (connect time still low)
To find out what the proces is doing I created to minidumps.
I managed to create two MemoryDumps 20 seconds apart. This is the output of the first:
!threadpool
CPU utilization 6%
Worker Thread: Total: 95 Running: 72 Idle: 23 MaxLimit: 200 MinLimit: 100
Work Request in Queue: 1
Number of Timers: 64
and the output of the second:
!threadpool
CPU utilization 9%
Worker Thread: Total: 111 Running: 111 Idle: 0 MaxLimit: 200 MinLimit: 100
Work Request in Queue: 1589

There's a web app I've been assigned to, which is running very slow. It is a site that sells products so it is database driven, however even pages that do not query the database are loading very slow. The pages use master pages, and the code is in VB.NETI checked with fiddler and the time it takes to load basic (non database driven) pages are about 5.5 seconds on average.
What are some tools that can help me determine the cause of the slow speeds, and any recommendations as to how to speed it up, or potential issues that could cause it?UpdateSo I messed around with the code piece by piece as I wasn't getting anywhere with these tools. As soon as I remove master pages, and I include the same code that's on the master pages in the .aspx page itself, the speed improves drastically (approximately 5 times faster load times). What might cause the master pages to cause load times to slow down so much?

I have developed a website in asp.net framework 2 . This website is being hosted in two different servers without any change in code. My issue is about the performance of these 2 sites. One website is taking much time for inserting datas to the DB (SQL server 2005). 2 websites are having different DB server.
I think the issue is for the DB server. How can we rectify the DB performance while insertion and Is there any other cause for this permance issue?

Every now and then (always after a long period of idle-time, e.g. overnight) when I access a site built using asp.net - it takes around 15 seconds to load the page (15 seconds before I see any progress whatsoever, then the page comes up fast).Further pages on that site, or refreshes, are quick as usual - they are also fast on other machines, only the first one seems to take the 'hit'.
Page tracing never through anything up (whole cycle was a fraction of a second) So my question is where else should I be looking? Perhaps IIS? Or could it still be my asp.net app and I'm just looking in the wrong place (the trace) for clues? As I don't have much control over the IIS server, anything I can check through asp.net would be more helpful, before I go ask that particular admin.

I have a Webforms, AJAX-enabled web page which, when rendering large amounts of data, is extremely slow to load in IE (we're married to IE - no other browser options). In an attempt to determine the source of the slowness, I viewed the HTML source (about 2.5 MB) and copied all of it (except for the Ajax JavaScript calls) to a blank .html file. IE renders this file MUCH faster than when the rendering happens through .Net. This seems to indicate that the AJAX JavaScript is slowing down the display of the page. Does this sound plausible? Any recommendations on improving performance here?
I've already eliminated as many UpdatePanel controls as I can from the page, but it doesn't seem to help with render time.Update... In the HTML source, I noticed that at the bottom of the screen, a call to WebForm_InitCallback() appears. When I executed this call directly through javascript:alert(WebForm_InitCallback());, the CPU spikes for 12 seconds before it completes! This call is here because I implemented ICallbackEventHandler to try to accomplish some traditional-style AJAX handling. Looking at WebResource.axd, that WebForm_InitCallback() method iterates through the entire form and attaches some kind of events to EVERY SINGLE textbox, checkbox, radiobutton, etc. So I guess I really need to abandon ScriptManager and UpdatePanel altogether here.

I have developed a gridview which has 7,000 records with some filtering. However, theuser is compaining that it is too slow. It seems to me that if the records were stored in memory it would be much faster. This is caching, I think. Is that the case? Can you updaterecords this way? Can you cache with an Access database or do you have to use SQL Server? Can you think of any other ways to improve

I have a situation where we are splitting dynamic content from static content and each is getting its own web server. The people maintaining the site want to be able to make navigation changes once and have it show on both servers without any major extra work (for them). I'm putting the navigation structure in an XML file which also has information on things specific to each content page. This brings me to the question of how to share that file. If I want the change to be instantaneous I can't rely on a scheduled task to copy the file from one server to another.Access to one of the servers is very limited due to security policy.
I am thinking about maybe a web service running on one server to get the data from it to pages on the other server. Does this sound viable or do any of you have other ideas that may work better? I considered having the navigation in a database but this introduces the need for a tool for the navigation updaters to have for them to do that. It is easy for them to update XML and just publish to the server with a lower security level. To get them database access requires terrible paperwork and meeting with security people.

We have built an asp.net application according to 3 tier architecture, but Data Tier and Application logic lies on the same server. Our client needs that to be deployed in 2 different servers. Only front end in web server DAL & BLL in app server. Database is in different server. All 3 servers are at different physical locations. How can we commuicate between these servers and our applicaton tiers? is there any option in IIS so that we can deploy only back end code in another server? what is the best approach to communicate between different application tiers when they are physically apart?

A friend and I manage a large website for a company. The site is build using Visual Studio 2005 and is a series of nested web applications run inside a master application employing nested master pages. Currently we have to manually move files around folders and FTP them to various servers and I am looking for a way to be able to manage the deployment end of the site in a more automated fashion. I'd like to be able to work on my local version of a project and once I'm done be able to hit one button and publish the site to our internal testing server and then when testing is complete hit another button to deploy it to the live web servers. Right now we have to manually navigate the windows folders and copy pages, css files, images, swfs, etc and FTP them manually. The driver for this is that we have a new junior develop starting and want to remove the manual aspect in advance of him starting.

We have a problem where in the user can download files from an email. A link that will redirect to a page where the code to download the file resides. Before the download the user needs to be logged in to the system for security. The problem is that sometimes for whatever reason when the user clicks the link the download dialog box does not appear and just a blank white page. It happens only on our staging environment where we have 3 servers.. We can't reproduce this in our dev and test env. where we only have one server.
Below is the actual code.

I have an website which runs nice on my development PC as well as on my local server.
But when deployed at clients server it gives error because of different datetime format at client server. I had checked it on 3 to 4 servers when the datetime format is same as my local server website runs fine. But when ever a datetime formate is different it starts giving error for datetime, whenever i try to do any transaction with date stored in datebase.

I'm a developer new to asp.net 3.5. My client asked if there were any implications of using Linq to SQL data sources with mirrored clustered servers with Failover clustering.
So my questions are can you use Linq to SQL with mirrored Clustered Servers?
If yes to the above, do you need to add or modify any code for mirrored Clustered Servers?

I was so happy today when I checked a site that gets a lot of user submitted content and realized that I had been able to grab my database from my US hosting company, send it overseas, and get it restored without any new UGC to copy over. Then I realized that all of my queries were broken and after some trouble shooting I realized that all of my tables that were not part of the (dbo) schema were renamed in server explorer to include the name (defautschema) which would require the renaming of my queries to specify defaultschema.tablename on all non (dbo) schema tables.
The first thing I tried to do was right click on the names of the tables and select rename to delete them right there in Server Exporer, but no such option exists. Then I followed the directions for renaming tables, but the table names in the table definition do not include the schema names. I also tried deleting the schema, but got an error message saying that I have to have a schema.
Is there any way for me to change the names of the tables so that I don't have to add "schemaname." to every single column name in ever query that I have ever written?

I am trying to set up my web site on a stand alone server using Windows Server 2003 with IIS 6 which will access SQL server database (2008) on windows 2008 R2 server (also not in the domain) I am using form authentication and I have configured a custom identity account in IIS6. The local account is on both servers with same password and I have registered the account using aspnet_regiis.exe -ga The application pool in my iis6 has the custom local account set as the identity and my web.config file has the appropriate tags in the system.web element <identity impersonate="true" />
The problem is the local account does not seem to get passed to the sql server. Right now my iis settings are anonymous access (using the local acct vs isr) and no authentication specified under that - I did try Integrated and basic but it prompts for the username and password which I do not want. One article I read stated this: windows authentication does not support delegation (passing credentials from one server to another) and is limited to the one hop rule, only a primary token can be passed to a second server. windows
authentication on iis (all versions) gives the thread a secondary(impersonation) token which can not be used to access any network resouce

I've made a small web site (MVC2, VS 2010) with some image gallery functionality. When testing locally the images download very very slowly, as if I had dial up internet connection. For example if I try
http://my_local_website/myimage.jpg it will be slow. However, if I try (via web browser) C:mywebsite_foldermyimage.jpg it will load instantly. Not sure if this is an issue of my local IIS7 or what, but I would like to fix it before going live.
