Creating Mobile Web Applications In VS 2010?
Jun 29, 2010
I am trying to create a mobile version of a web application using VS2010 (.Net 3.5, not 4). When I search for information on ASP.net mobile I see a lot of references to mobile controls that adapt their HTML to the specific device requesting the page. Since I would like this app to be viewable on as many as devices as possible, it seems like it would be better to use the mobile controls rather than just create a smaller version of a web form. Apparently VS2008 and up do not include the mobile control templates, but you can download and install them separately. I did, but when I tried to create a test page I get a server error complaining that the assembly "System.Web.Mobile" could not be found. I double checked in my references and that assembly is included in the project. The file System.Web.Mobile.dll is also on the server running the app.
Is there something that I am doing wrong, or is developing a mobile web app in this way using VS2010 not possible?

I am new to mobile app development and I dont want restrict myself to one platform. Some days ago I read an article that stressed on the fact that soon web apps running on mobile browsers may replace dedicated apps (at least for non-game apps). I want to develop a social networking web app that any phone can run via the browser. These are the things I would like expert comments on:
Resources/Guidelines for developing great UIs for rich mobile web apps (HTML5?, existing APIs/Frameworks I should know)The best ways to increase performance(a reusable native simple browser app per platform that caches, provides a uniform interface to the web apps,access to sensors, APIs, features like drag drop etc for that platform.is there already one?) How do I test the apps for various major platforms and across various devices (small/large screens, touch phones etc)Best ways to manage multiple device compatibility.. (how to best handle non-uniformity of functionality on various devices/browsers on the server side using ASP.NET)

I have a question concerning website structure. I have a website which will be an intranet site. On this site I will have a main page that has links to different apps that will reside in this site. I want to separate the apps in their own folders.My question is do I just create a folder for each one or do I create a new webpage within the main webpage for each one? The reason I am asking is I use three layer model and my object data classes and db classes need to reside in App_Code folder. Do I put all these from every app in the one folder(on the main page) or if I create a site within a site can each have it's own App_Code folder. Also if I create the site within a site will I be able to redirect to different pages just by relative URLS(../cashmanagement) and everything work OK.I am pretty new to ASP and this is my first site with mutiple programs.

creating a mobile version of the website I have created in WebMatrix. I have created the website and the email form and the data input forms and all seems to work ok with the SQL Server Compact 4 database, but I now want to create a version to run on my smartphone (it's a htc hd2 running windows mobile 6.5.3, though I think I may have to produce it to run on windows mobile 7 -feel free to comment).
There are some good tutorials out there for WebMatrix generally but I have yet to find anything covering the scenario above.
The other query relates to deploying the WebMatrix site. I know there is webhosting offered on WebMatrix, but I can't find a simple guide to what spec to be looking for in any package offering webhosting. (poor student looking for cheapest offer for trialling practise sites) I think I have come to the conclusion that if they offer Microsoft ASP.NET 4 then that should be ok for the Razor syntax and cope with the cshtml, and that at the basic level I am working at I don't need an SQL database as part of the hosting package as the compact travels as a file with the rest of the site.

I have an existing web application developed in Asp.Net F/W 3.5 and a mobile version of the same need to be created.
May i have some suggestions on:
How can i start with?.Some links & sites that would give me more clarity on how to approach this requirement. Is there any ASP.Net/iis features or Visual Studio option that ease this mobile version creation? As there are RadControls & Ajax used throughout the application, what should i be careful about? Will it require every form in the UI to be replaced and take the same time as the old UI creation? What all thinks should i be considering in the performance/optimization point of view?.

I'm using a common <machineKey> to allow two ASP.Net applications to share a single forms authentication ticket (ie. only need to login to one application to access both). My problem is that I only want users in a particular role to have access to the second application. What's the best way to implement this?
I've tried checking the role in Application_AuthenticateRequest() and doing FormsAuthentication.SignOut() if the role doesn't match, but that doesn't get picked up until the second request to the application. I can't redirect from Application_AuthenticateRequest() because that would just create a redirect loop.

When I am actively developing it is extremely cumbersome to write some code, fire up the debugger to test said code, wait a minute for the debugger to start, look at the page in the browser, stop the debugger, edit the code, rinse, lather, repeat. I can get around that by using CTRL-F5 and CTRL-SHIFT-B during development but I lose all the benefits of the debugger. Is there a better way to use the debugger, or something else I can do to get quick rebuilds and use of the debugger? I/we do write unit tests, but you also need to test your app in the browser so please no "you shouldn't have this problem if your unit tests were written properly"

I am trying to integrate an existing asp.net application with sharepoint 2010. I would like to be able to have a logged in user on the application access a document library via an Iframe on the sharepoint 2010 site. I want to use FBA on sharepoint. Is it possible to share the membership database from the asp.net application with sharepoint? If not, what would be the best way to accomplish this?

Is it possible to share the claims based authentication of a logged in Sharepoint 2010 user with a separate Asp.net application?
The following article describes how it was done using Sharepoint 2007 and forms authentication through forms auth and sharing machine keys etc however I cannot find any information regarding the external application consuming the claims authentication that is now used in Sharepoint 2010?

Using data posted by a mobile app to my database (via a web api) I will need to create PDF forms with the data filled in as if a user did that. I never did PDF generation, so some "points" that might decide what to use:
-Forms are pretty much a tabular structure.
-Some pages are in portrait, while others in landscape.
-Some columns have the data printed vertically.
-I will need to put images (saved in database, byte arrays) in some fields.
From what I read so far ITextSharp seems to be a popular choice?

It appears there are examples the web but must in c and looking for something in vb. Below is my web service. See in bold the error descriptions and in red the items visual studio is highlighting.

So I got a copy of Visual studio 2010 ultimate through my university and MSDN AA. I've been unable though to create any MVC2 projects in it. Even worse when I save my project from school and attempt to just open it at home I keep getting errors that it can't load the project (this included just open a basic empty project). I've tried a complete reinstall, and even manually downloading the MVC2 RC.

I have this code:
Code:
Dim obj1 As New TreeNode
obj1.Value = 1
obj1.Text = "Level" & obj1.Value
Dim obj2 As New TreeNode
obj2.Value = 2
obj2.Text = "Level" & obj2.Value
[Code]...
Can I somehow create a function that creates the nodes instead of I need to make Dim ... each time? If I have 300 nodes this is not a good solution.
I have tried something like this but it doesn't work:
Code:
Function CreateObj(ByVal no As Integer, ByVal name As String, ByVal obj As TreeNode) As TreeNode
obj.Text = "Level" & no
obj.Value = no
treeview1.Nodes.Add(obj)
Return obj
End Function

I am developing a web based application for a Motorolla Mc 9090, it is a wireless barcode scanner running windows mobile 5.0.
The idea is to centralize the inventory in one database, by scanning items, serials, bins etc.
I have a set of pages each containg forms, where the user will have to scan an item, and automaticall the scanner has a carriege return (ENTER key) the idea was to have the user simply scan, and the page would automatically click the button posting to server for processing and then the server would reply.
For some reason i cannot get the focus() to work as well as the defaultbutton propperty of the form. There is also 1 more problem, the readOnly textboxes look the same as the non readOnly textboxes, even with the backcolor property changed.(guessing this is just MS)
