Custom Server Controls :: Adding Controls To Custom Extended Gridview?
Oct 20, 2010
I have custom gridview that inherit from the regular gridview.
On of the features is that is has a built in page size dropdown in an extra header row.
Another feature is that this extra header row has a place holder where aditional controls can be added but here is where I have some problems.
When I add a control that is created outside the gridview to the gridviews builtin placeholder and tries to do anything that performs a postback the gridview dissepears, but appears again on a new post back.
Here is the code for the gridview:
[Code]....
And this is the way it is used in a usercontrol on page, the gridview is called gvList and the control that I try to add to its placeholder is the phrExtraHeaderControls:
[Code]....
What can be wrong, is the viewstate messed up in the postback so that the gridview can't be rendered?

I extended gridview control to add some new features and it is working fine. However, when i come to asp.net page and add the control declaratively, the templates of the parent control that is GridView are not visible.
I declare like following and then i cannot see all templates provided by GridVeiw itself such Columns, HeaderTemplate etc .
<MyGrid:GridViewList>
</MyGrid:GridViewList>

I have been trying to implement an extended GridView that eventually will include a panel with a number of filter options outside of the grid iteself.
As a test I have added a dropdownlist and a linkbutton but when these are rendered to the page they are rendered as plain HTML with none of the javascript or ids that are generated for server controls as a consequence the postback event is not fired when a dropdownlist item changes and the linkbutton is rendered as plain text.

Using VS2005, VB code behind,
I am extending the GridView control to include a custom pager for a custom paging scheme (only one page returned from the database at a time rather than all records). In my testing a discovered an issue - on my last page of data, the GridView's rows property always returns a collection of PageSize page, rather than the actual number of records on the page, with non-data fill records being empty rows.
For example, suppose I have 23 records in my database. Assuming a PageSize of 10, when I page to the last page of data the gridview it properly displays the last 3 recrods - but when I handle the GridView's CommandName="Select" event the GridView's Rows collection contains 10 records, the last seven of which are empty.
I set a break point in just before I call GridView.DataBind and verified that the DataTable used as the DataSource for the last page of data does in fact only contain the 3 expected records. But when I set a breakpoint on the Sub that handles the "Select" GridView command, the GridView.rows collection contains 10 records, the last 7 of which are empty.
This post[URL] and comments make note of the issue but the solution prescribed by the author does not seem to work.
Attached are some snippets of my extended GridView and the two methods from my page where I mentioned setting breakpoints above.

I'm attempting to create a custom control that extends the Table class. Inside of the table will be rendered a number of different controls based on a specified identifying property. On some of these controls, however, I need to specify validation for data types and requirement.To me, the most logical way of doing so is to add validators to the table and set their appropriate properties to specify which controls to validate. In doing so, however, I've discovered that none of the validators added will even render on the page in which the control is added. So is this a valid construct?Here's an example of what I mean:

I am trying to build a custom composite control, which allows me to add custom content to each child control. It's a similar concept to what you have with a GridView and TemplateColumn. The markup used to place the control on the page would end up being something like this:
[Code]....
I have the code below, which allows me to put that markup on the page without throwing any errors, and it renders all the correct HTML, except it doesn't render the contents of the ColumnTemplate. I have replaced the Render() code with a comment because it's quite long winded and doesn't add anything important here:
[Code]....
I have tried to follow examples on MSDN and other forums but I can't make this work. I think I'm missing the code to render the contents of the template, but I don't know how to hook that up.

I have existing project written by someone else that utilizes custom User Control that among other things contains a GridView control.I'm working on implementing the bulk-edit function so that users can modify data in many rows at once and then update the database accordingly.My problem is that in all examples that I see in order to implement this functionality you need to Override the CreateRow method, at which point you are able to put it in Edit State. The issue is that since my custom control inherits from User Control and not from GridView this protected method is not available. If I change the inheritance to GridView, tons of other things break inside this code, so I'd like to avoid that.My question is, is there anyway to still override the CreateRow if I'm inheriting from UserControl class and not GridView.If this is not very clear, please let me know and I'll try to explain further. I really need help with this, as it is time sensitive and it's always hard to work with someone elses code,

here's a situation and I would appreciate your response.
I have programmatically created the Wizard control:
Page_Load(obj s, evargs e)
{
Wizard ClaimDetailWizard = new Wizard();
foreach(int item in selectedItems)
{
//create new step
//added custom control to new step
//add step to wizard
}
//added wizard to a placeholder on a page
}
Based on List I get from Session i added new steps to my wizard To each step I had added a custom control
Each custom control in tern contains another custom Gridview Control in it.
So here's the problem when the page loads for example for two steps. All is good Wizard does what it's supposed to do.
But when I try to use sorting or paging in that custom Gridview. Somehow it displays the gridview I should see in the next step of the wizard.
Also what I'm noticing through debugging. Is that when I press next in the wizard I go back to the original page where I do all of the code specified above, and it recreates the wizzard. But it goes to the next step. Is this the way wizard supposed to work? Just doesn't seem very efficient.

I have some (probably very basic) questions about developing custom controls. I am wanting to derive a set of button controls, and the first one I have started on is a "DeleteButton", that has a additional property (DeleteConfirmationText) that is built into the OnClientClick attribute. To get that added, I overrode the Render method as follows:
[Code]....
This all works well. Now, I will add some logic to make sure that there is some text in the DeleteConfirmationText property, but that isn't the intent of my question.
What I am also wanting to do is to override some of the default property values, so I added that to the default constructor:
[Code]....
Now, in the designer in VS2008, and I look at the properties for the control, there isn't a default value shown in the "Properties" section, and the Causesvalidation still shows the underlying classes default value of "True". As well, in design mode, where the GridView control that containse my DeleteButton control would be displayed, there is an error box "There was an error rendering the control. 'Are you certain you want to delete this attorney?' cound not be set on property 'DeleteConfirmationText'. Here's the markup where I am defining the deletebutton control:
[Code]....
What am I doing wrong?

i create a custom control which can hold some templates, such as Header, Body Footer, etc.
[Code]....
i tried to use smarttags to allow the user to edit each of the templates, which worked pretty well. what i could not get working was to add a template if it has not been in the control. eg. add a header-template to the control above. i tried using the RootDesigner.AddControlToDocument() function of my controldesigner. but this function gives me an error, telling me the control i'm going to add the template (i used a new HtmlGenericControl("HeaderTemplate") as new Control) to is not valid. (i can't give the exact error message, cause i use a german version of visual studio 2008) i've been searching the web for nearly half a day now, but i did'nt find a working solution for my problem.

[VS 2010 RC1, .NET 4.0, VB.NET]
I'm working with a simple UserControl someone at my company created. It's basically just a DropDownList with a RequiredFieldValidator and some added properties (such as "Required", which controls the CSS styling of the DropDownList and whether the RequiredFieldValidator is Enabled or not).
Here is an example of the UserControl usage where a SqlDataSource is used to populate the ListItemCollection. I'm trying to specify an intial ListItem below (and would like the ability to add multilple ListItems if necessary) but can't seem to get this to work...
[Code]....
My code-behind looks as follows:
[Code]....
I've found several posts related to this but cannot seem to get the declarative ListItem to be added to the DropDownList.
I understand that using a WebControl is another option, but I'd like to learn how to get this method to work if possible.

The built in Asp.Net Controls (label, Textbox, etc.) all have a CssClass property that can be set, what do I need to do to implement that for a Web User Control?
I know how to add a property and pass thru the get & set to the corresponding Asp.Net control (example if I have a label I know how to create a LabelCssClass property that provides a get & set, but the control itself how do I set a CssClass or ClassName property.

I have a custom server control inheriting from CompositeControl. It consists of two RadioButtonlist controls that are rendered side by side in an html table. The number of ListItems in each RadioButtonList is not known until runtime. Depending on how many items each list contains, the RepeatColumns property of each list is set differently. To do this in the handler for the ItemDataBound event I need to get the count of ListItems in each RadioButtonList. How do I expose the Items.Count property of each internal RadioButtonList as a top-level property? I tried using a getter to return the count but this generates a compile-time error to the effect that the count cannot be assigned to--even though I have not created a setter.
Similarly, in the handler for the Submit event, I need to get the ClientID of each internal RadioButtonList to pass to a method that checks for data changes. How do I expose the ClientID of each component RadioButtonList as a top-level property?
I can of course index the Controls collection of the composite control to access the child control and read its properties--but that defeats the whole point of making a complex, independent custom server control.

I have a site using eight (so far) custom web user controls and two of them have started misbehaving in design view. When designing the control itself some (in one control) or all (in the other) regular controls (labels, text boxes, etc.) disappear from the design view surface. They can still be seen in the source view and if the control is hosted on a regular .aspx page the control displays properly. The code window recognizes all controls in the objects dropdown list and I can write appropriate code. The controls run properly on their hosted pages.
If I switch to Split view and select controls in the source view panel a very small area od the design surface becomes selected (like one pixel for any of us who remember programming old DOS applications with 80-column screens) but no controls can be seen.
In short, the controls work in every respect except that I cannot see all or part of the design surface in Design view when editing the controls directly.
I've double-tripple checked the source code for anything that may be causing this and just don't see anything. (The controls aren't that complicated.)
