DataSource Controls :: Connecting To Remote SQL Server Fine From Dev, Fails From Production Host
Feb 16, 2010
I have a SQL server in my office. I can connect from my home development workstation website to the remote SQL server with no problems but when I upload the site to the web host and try and use the same SQL server it fails with 'A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible'

In my windows application, i am listing the System DSN's configured on the remote machine in a combobox. Once i select the DSN and click on Connect button, i should be able to connect to the remote database. I am trying to open the connection to the database using ODBC but am getting the below error.
ERROR [IM002] [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified.
Below is the code sample
string conn = "Provider=MSDASQL;Remote Server=http://BLR1WKD010; Remote Provider=MSDASQL;DSN=" + clsODBC.pDBName + ";UID=" + txtUsername.Text + ";PWD=" + txtPassword.Text;
OdbcConnection odbcConn = new OdbcConnection(conn);

I have created my site using ASP.NET Personal Starter Kits 3.5. I use Visual Studio 2008 only . .with its built-in SQL Server (2005 Express) ... my database in App_Data is ASPNETDB.MDF ...
I have created some of my tables also ....in ASPNETDB ..
In my local PC the site was running fine ...
But when I publish my site on production server it doesn't work and shows the following error
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="Off"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>
Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>
My hosting provider connection string ..
<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=69.16.253.19;Initial Catalog=usa_data;Persist Security Info=True;User Id=user;Password=pass" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
My hosting provider gave me the connection string to connect to the SQL Server 2005 but it doesn't work...
I don't understand why my site was running fine using the production SQL Server 2005 in my local PC when I include ASPNETDB.MDF file in App_Data in my local pc only ..if I remove file ASPNETDB.MDF from App_Data of my local pc ... the site stops working ...
Can anybody tell em how to fix this ... !! I am very tensed since last 3-4 days

I have used a dll named MARCEngine, which is used to read Marc data. I use a method named MARC2MARC21XML which converts a normal marc file to an XML file.
The problem is it works great on my local IIS, but when I upload it to the production server, it only generates the root node and not the child nodes.
Here is a snippet of my sample page :
[Code]....
Asp.net has the permissions to access the files geneated.

I'm getting an error in Parallels Plesk for SQL Server database on restore the cause of which is a mystery to me. Here is the support ticket I sent my hosting company:
I'm in the process of restoring my databases and the first one restored just fine. The second one called ***** for *****.com failed with the following error:
Error: dbbackup failed: Unable to restore database 'alienreports' Not valid backup The media family on device C:WINDOWSTEMPlocalhostalienreports*******.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. VERIFY DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
This happened both when using the .bak file from my old host and after restoring that file on my local machine using SQL Server Management Studio 2008 just fine before backing it up and getting the same error when trying to upload and restore.

We have a virtual server hosted to the third party which we access through remote desktop. We have Sql server 2008 on Windows 2008. I created a website on my local hard drive and now we are ready to deploy. My question is what are the recommendations for publishing websites? What steps I need to take care of? Is it possible not to deploy the "code-behind" files. Incase of hacking of windows server, I do not want somebody to see my .vb files or Is it possbile that I can convert the whole thing except aspx files in to a strong dll?

While working with LINQ to ENTITIES I see that there is only a way to use stored procedure that is returning one entity only, or a view that is a join of two entities.
But what if I need in ASPX page to get two tables that there is NO connection between them, no join can be done between them at all.
I have one Stored Procedure that return the two tables, but entities don't support this right now.
I can split them to two Stored Procedure and call each of them separately.

I am trying to host my website developed on ASP.NET framework 3.5. this website project is working perfectly on my system in local host enviorment. but when I try to upload it to hosting server ( mochahost.com-- hosting server) it is creating problem.
I have uploaded all the webpages to standard folder, created the database using script file, I can see the table and data through Plesk control panel, so database creation is not the problem. I have change the connection string in web.config file according to the template given on the site.
here's the connection string I am using:
<connectionStrings>
<add name="JJMCONDO" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" connectionString="data source=db200.my-hosting-panel.com;Initial Catalog=ahalyam1_varun;User ID=xxxxx;Password=xxxx" />
</connectionStrings>
where JJMCONDO is the connection name
database name: ahalyam1_varun

I would like to do a connection of asp.net page with Sql Server. Here I would like to read the Windows user account name and pass in the connection.The connection should be Windows authentication. IIS server and Sql server are installed in different machine. Here I am able to connect locally, When I am running from server, It takes windows account of Server.
so i can read local account(Where user is accessing the web application) and make windows authentication sql server connection.

I am actually using 2 type of queries in my website e.g
These Queries are from my stored procedures
SELECT * FROM TblName WHERE FREETEXT(ColumnName, @parameter)
AND
SELECT * FROM TblName WHERE CONTAINS((Column1, Column2), @parameter))
I have enabled Full Text Indexing on my tables both local and on my hosting company MS SQL Server.
The above queries are working fine on my local database and return results but these queries return nothing when i try to run them on hosting company MS SQL Server.
I have identical data on both MS SQL Servers and both servers are 2008.

I have an application that uploads an Excel .xls file to the file system, opens the file with an oledbconnection object using the .open() method on the object instance. The upload and writing of the file to the file system works fine but I get an error when trying to open the file on our production server only. The application works fine on two other servers (development and testing servers).
string connectionString = ("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + fileName + ";") + "Extended Properties="Excel 8.0""
OleDbConnection connection = null;
connection = new OleDbConnection(connectionString);
connection.Open();
The exception comes on production server at connection.Open() some times, when I reset the asp.net worker process it started to work but after some hours/days It occurs again. how can I fix this issue which comes in production some times but very irritating, or there is some other work around.
