DataSource Controls :: Hiding Placeholder Contents If SqlDataSource Is Empty?
Oct 12, 2010
I need to be able to check programatically if a SqlDataSource contains no rows, and make a Placeholder visible if it does contain rows, and invisible if it doesn't. I seem to be able to return the affected rows using SqlDataSource1_Selected, but turning the placeholder invisible never works.
turning the placeholder off and on depending on whether the data source contains rows?

I need to be able to hide or disable a multitude of items (detailsviews, gridviews) when an SqlDataSource returns no rows. So if the page is reposted and no rows are selected, all the controls would be disabled.

I have a repeater control having columns in it.When I bind the control to a data source then some of the columns become empty when there is no data associated with it.I want to hide the column if there is no data associated with it.I was trying to implement a solution given in this thread:

However,I am not sure how to write the logic for hiding and showing the placeholder.I have written some code for the same but that clearly doesn't work.The following is the .aspx as well as the code behind which I am using:

I have a GridView control which contains a custom <pagertemplate> with a <asp:PlaceHolder runat="server" ID="plcPages"> control. The .aspx.cs file contains the following code:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) {
... {Other Code} ...
GridViewRow pagerRow = GridView1.BottomPagerRow;
PlaceHolder PagePlc = (PlaceHolder)pagerRow.Cells[0].FindControl("plcPages");
Button btnPage;
int iPageNum;
for (int i = 0; i < GridView1.PageCount; i++) { iPageNum = i + 1;
btnPage = new Button(); btnPage.ID = "btnPage" + iPageNum.ToString();
btnPage.CommandName = "Page"; btnPage.CommandArgument = iPageNum.ToString();
btnPage.Text = " " + iPageNum.ToString() + " ";
PagePlc.Controls.Add(btnPage); } }
Everything works fine the first time the page is displayed. But, when I click any pager button, including the Next and Prev command buttons that are not part of the PlaceHolder, the contents of the PlaceHolder are never re-displayed. I know from searching other posts that the PlaceHolder contents are lost during the trip to the server, but I am already recreating them every time the page is loaded. They are just never being shown again. I've spent the last two days playing with ViewState And every other combination.

disable linkbutton if gridview is empty in child pages. I have a Export to Excel LinkButton in master page and in child page I have textbox wherein I pass the input based on which the gridview loads. When the child page loads the Export linkbutton should be disabled. After entering the input in textbox on click of the button the gridview will be loaded wherein now the Export linkbutton should be enabled to export to excel.

I have a gridviewto which I have added a templatefield based column. In that template field there is a placeholder. I am adding either a textbox or a radiobuttonlist to that placeholder programmatically.
So the problem is that when the page compiles, the contents of the placeholder get tabulated. So each listitem of the radiobuttonlist is encapsulated by its own <td> and <tr>
Now I seriously would not want the items of my radiobuttonlist to get separated as I am using the jQuery UI to style them. Not that they are not getting styled, but not the way should be.
Following is my .aspx code that creates the CPL:

Following is my .cs code :

Following is the resultant compiled code. It is inside the <td> of the parent gridview:

Do I have to use dataset or such things?

My application has a Parent master page, a child master page and an aspx page( inheriting the child master page)
> Parent master page has two content placeholders ( A and B)
>Child master page uses the content placeholder A and instills two more placeholders ( C and D)
>aspx page can now use C and D naturally
However i would like to know whether the aspx page can place contents inside the placeholder B( which was not used by child master page)

On my web-page I have PlaceHolder, not controls are loaded into it.
<asp:PlaceHolder ID="PlaceHolderStatMain" runat="server">
</asp:PlaceHolder>
I am looking the ViewState generated for the page, it is the following:
<input type="hidden" name="__VIEWSTATE" id="__VIEWSTATE" value="/wEPDwUJLTg1NDkyNTUzD2QWAgIDD2QWAgIND2QWAmYPZBYCAgEPZBYCZg9kFgJmD2QWBmYPFQEYL3N0YXRfc3RhZGl1bS9sZWFndWVfV0VGZAIBDxUBGC9zdGF0X3N0YWRpdW0vbGVhZ3VlX0VFRmQCAg8VARgvc3RhdF9zdGFkaXVtL2xlYWd1ZV9GQ1VkZEuSBUr5LFL6WfCehNBJgjrq0GzwWCWN2qlU70V7LAAb" />
When I set EnableViewState to false:
<asp:PlaceHolder ID="PlaceHolderStatMain" runat="server" EnableViewState="false">
</asp:PlaceHolder>
The viewstate content was decreased significantly:
<input type="hidden" name="__VIEWSTATE" id="__VIEWSTATE" value="/wEPDwUJLTg1NDkyNTUzZGTTn8Y28VwmpE/K7yPPkLFvhrqMdU8THijFW/BMFzk0tQ==" />
Question: how to remove 'useless' viewstate content without disabling viewstate for placeholder himself (I would like other control loaded into placeholder to has viewstate)?
Is it possible at all?

I've got a datatable in a dataset which contains 44 rows. I can iterate through the rows and add the data to a placeholder - it's all there. However, if I bind a control (say a gridview or dropdownlist) to the datatable, all I get is one record (from the "middle" of the table). I get the same result when I create a dataview of the table - one row.

i have two sqldatasource controls. one i use to display data in textbox's ,filter'd by a select parameter in page behind code. Once checked, i want to copy this data to the other datasource ,by selecting checkbox.Then display this data in detailsview control.
At present the two datasource controls declared , render data to the page simultaneously during pageload. I want to first check data in textbox's from first source, before second datasource is rendered to screen. note, both are filtered by a page variable. i wish to leave the textbox datasource control in situ, as other controls and code depend on it.The other detailsview datasource is my problem?

In this test application, I am filtering by two ControlParameters. As you can see in the first codeblock, both parameters have a default value of %. This code works great. However, in the second code block, please note that the Default Values are eliminated. The second code block works as long as neither Textbox's text is blank. For some reason, when .NET evaluates the filter expression and inserts "" into the expression, it seems to bug out and case none of my results to be filtered.
I am able to verify this behavior by setting the defaultvalue="" for each ControlParameter.Obviously I have found a workaround, but I would like to know why the FilterExpression breaks down when an empty string is provided.
Code Block 1:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="Customer_Data" runat="server"
ConnectionString='<%$ ConnectionStrings:connectionString %>'
SelectCommand="SELECT Station, StoreFront, CustomerID as CustID FROM vStations" [code]...

I am dynamically creating a table that contains a textbox in each cell. The table is put in a placeholder control. Everything displays perfectly. The problem is when I go to retrieve the values entered in the cells. I have the code to generate the table in a separate method called CreateTable(). In order for my program to find a table in the placeholder when I go to save, I have to run CreateTable() in a postback event AND in the PageLoad event. If I call CreateTable() in only one of those places and I try to save, it says the placeholder is empty and, therefore, I cannot save the textbox contents. I've tried calling CreateTable() from InitLoad but that doesn't work because it needs to reference values from three static controls: 1 dropdown, 1 listbox, and 1 calendar control, which I don't believe have had their viewstate rendered yet.

I have asked similiar question before where I have two control on the page header says "username" and "gender". User can select both the control or either one and the page will execute searching based on the criteria supplied. So if username supplied
SELECT * FROM [this_table] WHERE username = @username
and if gender supplied
SELECT * FROM [this_table] WHERE gender = @gender
and if both supplied
SELECT * FROM [this_table] WHERE username = @username AND gender = @gender
I know this sounds not very complicated but in my case, I am having like more than 10 controls up there. It is something likeusername, gender, age, date of brith, title, father name, frst name, last name, blur blur blur and it's a lot then I started to lost. if i were to use if else caluse on code-behind and produce query, it would end up writing a lot of if-else and if i use stored procedure (with if-else) then my stored procedure would contains a lot of if-else statement. I am fairly new to this concept and if I'm on the wrong track, please correct me. Is there any better way to save my hair without actually going through each
if-else statement to build the query ?p.s. I'm using GridView and SqlDataSource command to display the result back on .aspx page.

I am trying to check whether a username exists in my database before inserting the new row & display a message to the user if it does.
On my SqlDataSource my InsertCommand looks like this:
InsertCommand="IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM Users WHERE UserName = @UserName) BEGIN INSERT [Users] ([UserName], [FirstName], [LastName], [City], [State], [Country], [CompanyName], [Active], [PasswordHash]) VALUES (@UserName, @FirstName, @LastName, @City,
@State, @Country, @CompanyName, @Active, @PasswordHash) END"
This works as expected: If the username is unique, the row is created.
If the username already exists, the row is not added.
The problem is, if the row already exists, the insert is rejected but the user is not notified.
So my question is, is there a way I can notify the user?
Maybe something like: InsertCommand = "If Not Exists (select....) Begin Insert...Else Notify User Somehow End This is a basic database, I'm not using the built-in membership provider nor will be.
