ViewState - Empty Placeholder Generates View State?
Jan 1, 2011
On my web-page I have PlaceHolder, not controls are loaded into it.
<asp:PlaceHolder ID="PlaceHolderStatMain" runat="server">
</asp:PlaceHolder>
I am looking the ViewState generated for the page, it is the following:
<input type="hidden" name="__VIEWSTATE" id="__VIEWSTATE" value="/wEPDwUJLTg1NDkyNTUzD2QWAgIDD2QWAgIND2QWAmYPZBYCAgEPZBYCZg9kFgJmD2QWBmYPFQEYL3N0YXRfc3RhZGl1bS9sZWFndWVfV0VGZAIBDxUBGC9zdGF0X3N0YWRpdW0vbGVhZ3VlX0VFRmQCAg8VARgvc3RhdF9zdGFkaXVtL2xlYWd1ZV9GQ1VkZEuSBUr5LFL6WfCehNBJgjrq0GzwWCWN2qlU70V7LAAb" />
When I set EnableViewState to false:
<asp:PlaceHolder ID="PlaceHolderStatMain" runat="server" EnableViewState="false">
</asp:PlaceHolder>
The viewstate content was decreased significantly:
<input type="hidden" name="__VIEWSTATE" id="__VIEWSTATE" value="/wEPDwUJLTg1NDkyNTUzZGTTn8Y28VwmpE/K7yPPkLFvhrqMdU8THijFW/BMFzk0tQ==" />
Question: how to remove 'useless' viewstate content without disabling viewstate for placeholder himself (I would like other control loaded into placeholder to has viewstate)?
Is it possible at all?

I have a DevExpress grid that needs to be refreshed every time the value in a combobox is changed. For example, I have a combobox that sets the grid's page size. One of the requirements is that the combobox does not cause a full postback.
The combobox is declared like this:
<asp:DropDownList ID="cboPages" AutoPostBack="false" runat="server"
EnableViewState="false" OnSelectedIndexChanged="cboPages_SelectedIndexChanged" />
On selected index changed, it sets a cookie whose value is the selected value. When the combobox value changes, a javascript function is called:
function PerformCallbackOnGrid(grid) {
try {
grid.PerformCallback("refresh");[code]....
The function is attached in code behind: this.cboPages.Attributes["onChange"] = "PerformCallbackOnGrid(" + this.GridClientID + ")";
After performing these steps:The user changes the grid page size using the combobox, so PerformCallback is called at least once.
The user presses F5(refresh).
The user tries to change the page size again.
an 'Invalid viewstate' error message appears.
I have tried setting ViewStateMode to Disabled for the grid, also EnableViewState="false".

Now here is the weird thing. First i am running it locally on the built in vs2008 web server.I load my control in fine, do a postback from a linkbutton, locally on my machine it all works fine, no issue.However when it goes onto my host, it falls over with the message:
Failed to load viewstate. The control tree into which viewstate is being loaded must match the control tree that was used to save viewstate during the previous request.Now i also load controls dynamically and use postbacks and things in the admin area of the site...and that works fine, however my front end just keeps failing? See the code behing below:

I have been getting this error a lot lately with some of my users, and I had a couple of concerns with view state and I have read so many articles but I am still lost..
1. I use masterpage on all the pages and I need viewstate for some of the pages but..
There is a page where a user will fill out the information and then submit this data to a cgi server, and it is where I get most of the Client Disconnected errors, what would happen if I disable viewstate when they click on that button?
Now when a user browses from one page to another, does the view state from the previous page get deleted? If not how would I delete it?
Does the master page have its own viewstate? Would I be able to make sure none of items on my master page are using the viewstate?

I am using ASP.NET MVC 2 in Visual Studio 2010. I have a ASP.NET MVC application with a master page that contains 3 content placeholders. When I create a new view from a controller by right-clicking the action method and selection "Add View", I end up with a ASPX page that does contain the 3 content placeholders but in the wrong order. This is by design because in the T4 template used to create views "TitleContent" will be used first followed by the "MainContent" and after that all the other content placeholders are put.
I have a subtitle content placeholder in my master page that I want to put before the "MainContent" placeholder. Is there a way to achieve this with modifying the Create.tt T4 template?

I need to be able to check programatically if a SqlDataSource contains no rows, and make a Placeholder visible if it does contain rows, and invisible if it doesn't. I seem to be able to return the affected rows using SqlDataSource1_Selected, but turning the placeholder invisible never works.
turning the placeholder off and on depending on whether the data source contains rows?

I have a repeater control having columns in it.When I bind the control to a data source then some of the columns become empty when there is no data associated with it.I want to hide the column if there is no data associated with it.I was trying to implement a solution given in this thread:

However,I am not sure how to write the logic for hiding and showing the placeholder.I have written some code for the same but that clearly doesn't work.The following is the .aspx as well as the code behind which I am using:

I am developing a new website and I have a very strange problem. Depending on a simple query string parameter value I have "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" or a correct page. Let me show a couple of examples:
This url works, and displays the value passed in the "data" parameter:
http://62.22.11.221/default.aspx?data=cppexample
But this url does not work and I don't really know why:

Is there any way to use placeholder similar to WebForms in NVelocity View Engine (.vm files)? Today I've got a component containing everything for the <head>, but I wish to specify additional tags from each view page like it can easily be done in ASP.NET WebForms / MVC:
<asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="head" runat="server"></asp:Content>
If this is not possible directly trough NVelocity View Engine, do I have any other alternatives other than using a blank MasterPage and adding all markup in each view page?

I am dynamically creating a table that contains a textbox in each cell. The table is put in a placeholder control. Everything displays perfectly. The problem is when I go to retrieve the values entered in the cells. I have the code to generate the table in a separate method called CreateTable(). In order for my program to find a table in the placeholder when I go to save, I have to run CreateTable() in a postback event AND in the PageLoad event. If I call CreateTable() in only one of those places and I try to save, it says the placeholder is empty and, therefore, I cannot save the textbox contents. I've tried calling CreateTable() from InitLoad but that doesn't work because it needs to reference values from three static controls: 1 dropdown, 1 listbox, and 1 calendar control, which I don't believe have had their viewstate rendered yet.

I start with a blank ASP.NET page where I disable ViewState for the whole page with EnableViewState=False and even ViewStateMode=Disabled.keep adding various controls to the page -- Label, Table, Calendar, TextBox, DropDownList.Everything looks good, i.e. my __VIEWSTATE tag fluctuates between 24 and 28 characters.As soon as I add a single RadioButton (or CheckBox), the __VIEWSTATE shoots up to 130 characters. And it keeps growing by over 100 characters every time I add another RadioButton.

On page1.aspx i hava a textbox with id="tb1"
On page2.aspx I have a textbox with id="tb2"
page2.aspx is set as postbackurl for page1.aspx. For both labels enabl;eViewState is true. Shouldn't the text I write in page1 also appear in the label on page2? Can I implement this without looking into Request headers, and setting the text myself?

I am creating a simple string of values that get added to a label after a post back. I am setting the values thorugh ViewState. However, my appended values do not get updated until AFTER the 2nd postback. Example:
On Page_Load the label displays a "0";
If I enter a "1" in the text box and click the button the label still displays a "0";
If I click the button again (the 2nd postback) then my label correctly displays "0,1"; This works for whatever value I enter after. i.e. "0,1,35,hello world", etc.
What I am I missing? Code Below.
.ascx - I left out inherits and codebehind

i want to store IQueryable value to ViewState. my code is as below:
Private
Property _Query()
As IQueryable
Get
Return
CType(ViewState("_Query"), IQueryable)
End
Get
Set(ByVal value
As IQueryable)
ViewState("_Query") = value
End
Set
but when i run my page i get following error:
Type 'System.Data.Linq.DataQuery`1[[DynamicQueries.VW_EmployeeProfile_Filter, DynamicQueries, ersion=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null]]' in Assembly 'System.Data.Linq, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' is not marked as serializable
what should i do to get rid of this error. previously i was doing like this:
Private Shared _Query As IQueryable
but problem is that in Multi users environament, Shared variable is making problem, that is why i want to store it in ViewState.
