Security :: Encryption Algorithm - Encryption Of Data Required In The Coding?

Sep 16, 2010

Not sure if I'm posting the question in the right category.

1) I'm working in a project where encryption of data is high priority. Could some one suggest what would be the best encryption method to protect data from being cracked.

I'm using TCP/IP protocol.

2) Is HTTPS totally secured. If I'm using HTTPS, does that mean that there is no encryption of data required in the coding?

Database Encryption Or Application Level Encryption?

Oct 23, 2010

When you need to store sensitive data such as CCs or SSNs, do you:1) Build your own encryption routine within the application, define a secret key somewhere in a config file, and then manually encrypt/decrypt data going to the database.2) Push all the problem to the database, using the built in DB capabilities (I think most vendors call it Transparent Database Encryption). What trade-offs have you find for your solution? Does writing your own routine perform poorly when compared to TDE? Is code maintainability, or conversely DB vendor lock-in an issue?

DataSource Controls :: Applying A Hash Function In Md5?

Jan 18, 2010

I need to create a hash key on my tables for uniqueness and someone mentioned to me about md5. But I have read about checksum and binary sum; would this not serve the same purpose? To ensure no duplicates in a specific field.

How can implement this? do I need to write code in my vb application which populates the tables with stored procedures or can I do this from SQL server 2005 studio express?

DataSource Controls :: EF4 - Function Imports In ObjectContext

May 19, 2010

If I create a new EDMX model and then I import a function, then I can see my function generated in the Designer. If I perform the same process but I add a T4 template (for Self-Tracking Entities) then I loose the function definition, although TT file has code adding a region named "Function Imports". Is this a bug or am I performing something wrong?

DataSource Controls :: Derived Table And MIN Function?

Feb 27, 2010

I have the following query which returns all appointments for a given date, grouped by client and appointment date. For those clients that have multiple appointments on that date, I get multiple rows, one for each appointment time. I only want the earliest appointment for each client, which would result in only one row per client. If I add the MIN function to SchedTime, I'm forced to put all columns in a GROUP BY clause, which isn't what I want. Can I use a derived table and/or MIN(Schedule.SchedTime) to achieve this? Or is my thinking wrong to begin with?

"SELECT Schedule.ClientId, " +
"ClientData.FirstName, " +
"ClientData.LastName, " +

DataSource Controls :: Failed To Work With The RetrieveData() Function ?

Jan 26, 2010

I've never used the RetrieveData() function and I don't know much about it.Having failed to work it out myself could someone show me some examples of how I call this method? Here's what I know about it:
1.It hadles the work of contacting the database and creating the DataSet.2. You must import System.Data, System.Data.SqlClient and System.Web.Configuration namespaces in teh web page.3. It can be called in any event handler in the web page code.I've tried typing this method in my page_Load() but I get the squiggly red underline which indicates that it doesn't recognise this method.

DataSource Controls :: Finding Function That Grabs The Inserted Identity Value?

Jan 11, 2010

I have a detailsView that I use for Insert. Once a record is Inserted, I need to get the new idenetity value.

Is there some function that grabs the inserted identity value? Or do I need to query it somehow?

By the way, the reason I'm doing this is the user is inserting a record into a 'general' list that is being applied to a 'specific' list - example, an employee can select a vendor from a list, but the vendor isn't listed so the employee adds the vendor in the vedor list and while the new vendor is inserted, the vendor info is also applied to the new order record.
