I started learning LINQ, So i thought of just creating gridview with sorting and paging using objectdatasource using LINQ. So i got this link
[URL] which Brian Orrel tell us how to do using IQueryable Interface. but i have nearly 300 lines of stored procedure which joins nearly 20 tables. so i thought of creating a stored procedure and using that instead of IQuerytable.

on my WebApplication I have GridViews filled with a LinQ-Query. Like this
Dim teamA = (From t
In datacontext10.T_TEAM
Where t.group =
"A"
Order
By t.sort)
GridViewA.DataSource = teamA
GridViewA.DataBind()
Now I want do enable automated Sorting and Paging? How could that work? Could I use a ObjectDataSource? Which control could do that for me?

I have a grid bound to a linqed SP thus:
Session["results"] = db.spGetCaseByNumberOrSurname(txtCaseNum.Text.Trim(), null).ToList();
gvResults.DataSource = Session["results"];
on the sorting of it, i would like to be able to do this..
protected void gvResults_Sorting(object sender, GridViewSortEventArgs e)
{
string sortExpression = e.SortExpression;
List<spGetCaseByNumberOrSurnameResult> data = Session["results"] as List<spGetCaseByNumberOrSurnameResult>;
if (sd == SortDirection.Ascending)
{
sd = SortDirection.Descending;
gvResults.DataSource = data.OrderBy(d => d.GetType().GetProperty(sortExpression));
}
else
{
sd = SortDirection.Ascending;
gvResults.DataSource = data.OrderByDescending(d => d.GetType().GetProperty(sortExpression));
}
gvResults.DataBind();
}
sadly that doesnt do any sorting at all..it in fact errors with "The data source does not support server-side data paging."

It has been more than 2 days since I had started searching for the answer and I still don't know how to do it.
I have empty gridview that is filled with data depending of the parameters given. The gridview is used to track changes user had made to the database.
In the first dropdown list the user selects from which table (or all tables) to display the data. From the second dropdown list the user selects from which column (or all columns) of the previously selected table to display data. In the first textbox the user enters the search term and in the third and fourth textboxes the user enters the date range in which the changes occurred.
After clicking button the data within the given parameters should be displayed. The problem is that data is displayed fine, but I can't manage to get sorting and paging to work so if possible, give concrete answer because I'm pretty sure I googled one half of the web during these 2 days. :)
Here is the code for the .aspx file:
[Code]....
Here is the codebehind:
[Code]....
To sum everything up... My question is: "How to enable sorting and paging for this code?"

I'm trying to extend the GridView control to enable sorting and paging for any situation.
When using my control I am fetching data from a database and filling a DataSet with it, then binding the GridView upon every page load. My first question would be, is this the correct approach?
To sort the GridView I am overriding the OnSorting method which stores the sort expression and direction in the ViewState, then creates a DataView and utalises the Sort method to sort the underlying data. It then sets the Data Source to this DataView and rebinds the GridView.
Paging is handled by OnPageIndexChanging which simply sets the PageIndex property and again rebinds the GridView.
My problem is; when any control causes a postback my GridView is no longer sorted, presumably because it is persistently rebound. If I don't rebind it then the GridView is empty on postback since the data isn't automatically stored in the ViewState. I have considered saving the data source in the ViewState but I would assume that this is bad practice for large amounts of data? - also DataViews are not seralisable.
The only solution I can think of currently is to override OnDataBound and sort the data every time. This results in a double sort when paging triggers a postback which seems inefficient. Code illustration of this below,
[Code]....
I'm looking for the cleanest 'best practice' solution as this is a learning exercise more than anything else.

I have got an issue while using LINQ 2 SQL.
public IEnumerable<Customer> GetCustomers()
{
Table<Customer> custObject = context.Customers;
IEnumerable<Customer> filteredCustList = from customer in custObject
select customer;
filteredCustList;
}
GridView2.DataSource = utilLinqClass.GetCustomers();
GridView2.DataBind();
(no errors at build time or at compile time) Error I am getting is: An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file App_Dataaspnetdb.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

I have a GridView whose datasource is set programatically. The sorting is also handled in code via the OnSorting event of the GridView.Since I'm stuck in crappy dotnetnuke, I've had to change the doctype of the skin to XHTML Transitional so that the AjaxControlToolkit would work properly with IE.fter doing this, the sorting of this GridView stopped working... if I remove the doctype change file, it goes back to working again.I can tell that the event is firing, but it is now unable to find the underlying DataSource of the GridView to have something to sort. My OnSorting event follows; whenever it is fired, the "Data Source not Found" message is displayed.
[Code]....
protected void gvGrads_Sorting(object sender, GridViewSortEventArgs e)

Moderators Note: THIS ISSUE IS BIG FOR ME AND EVEN IF POSSIBLE, GET THE REPLY FROM THE DESIGNER OF GRIDVIEW. I have been looking for him for long. I am really fed up with reviewing a good lot of web pages on how we can possibly customize the gridview to enable sorting and paging. So many sites have listed out a lot of information and so many guidances. But the problem is that one works out fine and the other is a burden. I really feel bad about being given the job of customizing this kind of a gridview which has no user friendly approach to it. Also, this control is rendered without the pager links inside the <tfoot> tag. I have tried the Pear Pager in php. It is that good and easy to use and compared to that, the gridview in asp.net is the worst ever control i have ever tried so far.
1. i can use the images to indicate the sorting direction
2. I can have the custom pager like
[code]
<<Previous 1 2 3 .. 7 Next >>.
[/code]
When i click the next when i am viewing the page at 3 , the pager links should change as
[code]
<<Previous 2 3 4 .. 7 Next >>
[/code]
Kindly look into this type of requirement and firstly tell me whether this is possible with the gridview control. I would like this request even to be escalated to the designers of the gridview control also, so that Microsoft comes out with a reply THAT WORKS and not the kind of stuff like surfing through a lot of links and pages and finally wasting a lot of days precious time and still breaking the head with this useless control. I have spent a lot of time in searching for a perfect way. Not writing a code that is non-standard. I am really serious b'cos I have spent weeks in customizing this control. If I dont get a solid reply atleast now, I am going to generate all the output by HTML content by custom coding.

here's a situation and I would appreciate your response.
I have programmatically created the Wizard control:
Page_Load(obj s, evargs e)
{
Wizard ClaimDetailWizard = new Wizard();
foreach(int item in selectedItems)
{
//create new step
//added custom control to new step
//add step to wizard
}
//added wizard to a placeholder on a page
}
Based on List I get from Session i added new steps to my wizard To each step I had added a custom control
Each custom control in tern contains another custom Gridview Control in it.
So here's the problem when the page loads for example for two steps. All is good Wizard does what it's supposed to do.
But when I try to use sorting or paging in that custom Gridview. Somehow it displays the gridview I should see in the next step of the wizard.
Also what I'm noticing through debugging. Is that when I press next in the wizard I go back to the original page where I do all of the code specified above, and it recreates the wizzard. But it goes to the next step. Is this the way wizard supposed to work? Just doesn't seem very efficient.

I added a column of type "timestamp" to a table in SQL Server to use for concurrency control. I deleted all my tables from the Linq surface and then added them back. I see that the "Time Stamp" attribute is set to True for the timestamp column and False for all the other columns. I also see that the "Update Check" attribute is set to Never for all columns, including the timestamp column.
After watching some demo videos and reading some tutorials, I had expected to have to manually set the "Update Check" attribute values on the columns - to Never for all columns but the timestamnp column where it should be set to Always. But, before setting the "Update Check" to Always on the timestamp column, I decided to test it the way it was, and Linq seems to be doing the right thing - it seems to be using the timestamp column for concurrency control correctly even with "Update Check" set to Never on the timestamp column.
So my question is - does the fact that "Time Stamp" is set to True trump the "Update Check"? Or is there any other reason one could or should set "Update Check" to Always on a timestamp column? Is there any change in behavior?

I continue to get compiler errors. I have a Gridview (with Delete and Edit buttons) that I populate via LINQ with e-mail addresses. When they hit the delete button I want to use LINQ to delete the row from the table based on the GridView DataKey. If I use Response.Write(ID) it will show the ID number for the Email that I want to delete.Here is the error:

I want to display a Gridview of Patients before I submit them to the database. Is there a way(better way), other then List<Patients>, to bind a list to a GridView.
I am using Linq to SQL and I have a DAL with the Patients table inside. I create a new list of Patients
[Code]....
Now the problem is I can't use a Linqdatasource or Objectdatasource to link to the GridView as no data is in the db yet. The only thing that works is GridView.DataSource = _patients; but I lose all automatic formatting and as far as I can tell it is going to be a pain to format manually. It would seem I should be able to somehow link my object _patients to an one of the datasourses so I would have formatting and all.

I'm coding a report page.In this page,there are two date fields for user to filter the date and the GridView is filled depending on these dates in the CodeBehind (When user click the button view).Now I want toimplement a paging/sorting feature for this GridView.I've researched and see there are default paging for GridView which is not very efficient (my report table may have thousands of records) and custom paging but this requires using ObjectDataSource (which I don't use).Thus anyone can recommend me some approaches that are best used in this situation?

I have a database table column consisting of text URLs [URL] In my LINQ-to-SQL-driven gridview, I want to make this a clickable link programmatically, with differing link text (e.g. "Link text"). I'm getting close but am missing some key concept. Here's the core of the .vb codebehind:
Dim dctx As New ResourceMod.ResourceModDALDataContext
Dim eleResObj = From eleRes In dctx.Resources Where eleRes.Type = "url" Select siteurl = eleRes.Website
GridView1.DataSource = eleResObj
GridView1.DataBind()
This displays the raw URL in the gridview (i.e. non-clickable). I've experimented with adding an explicit hyperlink column a la [URL](setting AutoGenerateColumns false etc.), but haven't yet figured out how to assign the asp:hyperlink Text and NavigateUrl fields with the anonymous-type object eleResObj. Using a field construct such as Text='<%# Eval("siteurl") %>' isn't working, presumably a scope issue. Is a LinqDataSource needed in this case, and if so, how would that affect the original LINQ query?

I have created an asp.net usercontrol that should list users in a number of applications. For that purpose, the control renders a repeater (foreach application) which in turn renders a gridview (with users for that application).
The control renders fine, except the fact that columns in the gridview are not sortable. Nothing happens (no postback) when clicking the headers. Apparently, no JavaScript is rendered to perform the postback when clicking the header.
This is the code:

I have a datagrid that is displaying data that is being returned from a stored procedure. That works fine. The problem is that I want to do sorting. I know that there is sorting functionality in the grid, however, I don't want to go back to the server and get a new set of data. What I want to do is just re-sort the data that is already being displayed.
Basically, I couldn't not find an easy solution to this issue. I tried updating my dataGrid to a gridView control and even that (for my particular issue) was difficult. I wound up un-doing all the changes and just adding another grid that had just the data I wanted for the requirement. If anyone else has an issue like this I would recommend taking it out of a datagrid and writing it in jQuery. I could of written a table that had the data I wanted (and fully sortable using a plug-in mentioned below) in 15 minutes compared to the hours I spent trying to jam a square peg into a round hole.
