I have developed Dynamic Data application for DB administration. I'd like to show thrown exception message (when connection to db is closed) in UI friendly manner. I cant figure out where to catch this exception.
Tried EntityDataSource events in List PageTemplate - no success.
I have an application with a few dbml files to connect to several sql servers in order to import data from one to another using Linq to SQL.
There are 2 connection strings with integrated security and in one I provide user ID and password.
It all works great in the development workstation. I've then wrapped the dll project and deployed the asp.net application to a test server. Then, when I tried to run the application to import the data, I got a connection exception:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
I figured out after some debugging the problem is with the DataContext whose connection string is the one I provide user ID and password. Now, the funny part is that the same connection string works if I create a udl file and test it. And again the same connection string works with my development workstation.
Here is the code copied from [URL] In asp.net code behind, I use try-catch try to catch any error but never catch it. In SQL database, if I rename Employees to Employeesx or change column DepartmentID to DepartmentIDx, record will not be deleted (it is right) without any error (it is wrong, suppose catch an error).

I'm trying to weigh up which is the better most reliable database connection for use on a vb.net/ms sql site. I've previously experienced problems catching and closing db connections with the using statement if an error occurs, but do like the fact it doesn't need to use any global variables. I want to add a connection to the Server Explorer in VS. The Data source is Microsoft SQL Server (SqlClient). After entering in all my information and I click Test Connection, it is successful.
But when I click OK, I get the error:

Not sure why it works if i connect to SQL 2005 on another server, but now that i have SQL Express on the same server as the pages, im getting the following error: I have attached my connection string within my web.config and also how its being called within the code behind. Now this page was written by another programmer some time back.. so not sure if the method he used to do this is the best or only way. But i have connected to other SQL database with other applications with alot less code.

Is there a way to catch a database exception and then redirect to an error page? I have a data access class that I use to make a sql connection and then functions that call it to execute my SQL commands. My problem is that if my database is not available I cannot catch that error. Here is the code I am using in my class:

My instance name is MSSQLSERVER and the server that I am using is on my local machine and it has my computer name in it.
I am using Asp.Net MVC 2.0 for creating a user and assigning properties to the user at the same time. I am using my Windows account to access database on my local computer. Why is my connection string works fine the first time and not working now? And how to configure connection to use TCP-IP?
I have SQL Server Browser running ander Local account and openned port in my Firewall.
Background: I use SQL server 2005 developer edition and visual studio 2008. Visual studio 2008 is running on a local machine with Vista business edition. SQL server is running on a remote server using Windows server 2003. Both computers are within the same domain.
Problem: First, I used the server explorer to connect to the SQL server. Everything works as desired. Then I write code to do the same thing. I keep getting the following error message:

However, I used the exactly identical connection string as the one used in the server explorer. So connection string should not be the problem. In addition, I tried the test code in MSDN, which tells whether my domainusername can flow the network. It turns out the user name is fine. I also went to the SQL server management studio and found the login for my computer is NVCWeihao while my computer login name is NVCweihao. I am wondering if this uppercase letter really affects the connection.
When I'm using this to open Connection to DB,
Do I need to Close it at the end?
Or by using it, it close by itself?

How/Can I Set the try, catch statment to catch a specific Error. For example i am getting the following error:

Basicly The = is part of my SQL string which points to a table that currently doesent exist. I want something like catch ex as SqlException (0x80131904) or catch ex as SqlException = "0x80131904" or even catch ex as System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException = "Incorrect syntax near '='." I just want something so i can put "table doesnt exist" in the error message without having to use:
catch ex as System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException
As i have other code on my page that could result in a different type of sqlExeption.
I have a stored procedure that creates a dynamic query. Sometimes the query is not built because there are no elements in the dynamic query. When the aspx page loads the SqlDataSource throws an error that the query is malformed. How can I catch this error, and handle it with a default message, before it returns the error to the aspx page?

When the register is clicked on, details entered by the user will be saved into the database, but before it will check if the user has already participated in the contest (using AJAX). We had an issue with a DMZ SQL server so we brought up another server in it's place with the same name, etc Everything appears to work properly.But on one of our pages, we're getting this error (see below).What else is odd is that I pointed our internal test webserver to the same SQL server (running the same code, etc) and it works just fine.Code wise, there are three gridviews on this page within three different tab panels displaying information. The gridviews are being databound by seperate SqlDataSources.

We are currently migrating our test databases to a new server and I am switching one of our sites over to use them. When running the application from my development box it hits the database just fine. However when I compile and push the code out to our test server and try to use the same datbase I get the ExecuteNonQuery requires an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is closed error. I cannot seem to figure out why. Also when I point the site at our old test server it works just fine.

View 3 RepliesI have VS 2010 professional. I am trying to open "ASP.Net Configuration" through Project -> ASP.Net Configuration.
It pops up the Notification about the ASP.Net Development Server localhost but doesn't open ASP.Net Configuration in the default browser.I clicked on the Root Url (by double clicking on the 'development server' at the right bottom from Notification Manager).
It throws following error
"An error was encountered. Please return to the previous page and try again."
Clicking on "How do i use this tool".It opened page with error.
