DataSource Controls :: E.Result In Selected Versus Selecting Event Of Linqdatasource Control

Sep 23, 2010

in the selected event it seems even though e.TotalRowCount really is the total row count, when I cast e.Result to a type in order to access the actual data only the current page of data is there? not all.

IEnumerable<InventoryGridItem> items = (IEnumerable<InventoryGridItem>)e.Result;

items only has the 15 records for the current gridView page, not all the records, is this normal? If I need to access all the items in the result do I need to stick with the selecting event instead?

E.Result When Data Source Was Shaped - Linqdatasource Selected Event

Sep 21, 2010

How do I handle using e.Result when my datasource was shaped (select new{})? example aspx markup below:

[Code]....

1) since I shaped, it's an anonymous type right? so what do I cast e.Result to in order to be able to get at the data? 2) I am thinking of using the selected event to handle some conditional page setup based on whether or not any results were actually found from the main query (the one that is used to bind data to a gridView via this linqdatasource control)... so I need to check for count > 0 and if it is, I need to fill a few dropdown controls based on a few new queries

DataSource Controls :: LinqDataSource.Insert(values) Versus InsertParameters

May 26, 2010

I use LinqDataSource and need to make insert not from any data-bound controls like formView (just by pressing button on page).

In SqlDataSource I can set InsertParameters like this

<InsertParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlPrice" DefaultValue="0" Name="Price"
PropertyName="SelectedValue" Type="Int16" />
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlDisc" DefaultValue="0" Name="Discount"
PropertyName="SelectedValue" Type="Int16" />
</InsertParameters>

and then just call Insert().

But in LinqDataSource we don't have method Insert() taking no papameters so I need to create collection with values I want to insert.

Forms Data Controls :: LinqDataSource Selecting Event Fire Twice?

Sep 23, 2010

In my web app, I used LinqDataSource, ListView and DataPager (.NET 3.5 sp1) to implement search feature with paging. I have a button to trigger the search.

But In the first time, the Selecting event of LinqDataSource fire twice and I don't know why (I debugged my code very carefully). I don't use QueryString with DataPager and assign PageSize of DataPager in the first time of page load to prevent the ListView bind again (as in some instructions I found in forum)

I can't post my code because it's quite large.

C# - Add WhereParameters To LinqDataSource In Selecting Event?

Mar 19, 2010

I have a repeater using a LinqDataSource as a data source. When a query string is entered, I'd like to filter the results, but ONLY when a query string is entered. If there is no query string, the results should not be filtered, all results should be returned.

I'm trying to add a WhereParameter to my LinqDataSource in the Selecting event of the LinqDataSource, but it's not working. Here's my code:

protected void ldsImages_Selecting(object sender, LinqDataSourceSelectEventArgs e)
{
if (Request.QueryString["id"] != null)
{
e.WhereParameters.Add("ImageTypeID", Request.QueryString["id"]);
}
}

DataSource Controls :: Getting Value From LinqDataSource In FormView DataBound Event?

Mar 16, 2010

I just started working with LinqDataSources and I was wondering how you retrieve values in a FormView DataBound Event.

With an ObjectDataSource I believe you can grab them like:

Is there a similar way to acheive this with a LinqDataSource?

DataSource Controls :: Passing Parameters By Selecting Event Handler?

Sep 19, 2010

I'm having an issue coming up with an appropriate code design to implement a search page using linq to sql for my DDL. I think the best way for me to explain where I'm at is describing what I've done in the past, before linq. Lets say we have a basic search page with various user input controls for search options... for simplicity, let's say there are two main ways the user can search.
1. a dropdown filled with account numbers. When that drop down is changed and an account number is selected, a gridview needs to be populated with all the records for that account.
2. the second way is a dropdown for choosing what field you want to search, a textbox for entering what you want to search for, and a button to execute that search. In the past, just using straight ado.net

I would handle each of these two search options separately within the events of the dropdown list and the button, respectively. In selectedIndexChanged for 1, and in the buttonClick event for 2, I would construct my sqlCommand etc., ultimately returning a dataset or datatable which I would then bind to the gridview. The logic was separated by the two different event handlers. Now, fast forward to linq to sql and I have a similar page layout, but I am using the linqdatasource selecting event to build my where conditions. Now the difference is *everything*, all the logic, is now in this one event handler, which search option did the user run? Could I somehow craft an IQueryable <T> within each of the input controls event handlers (like the button click, or selectedIndexChanged of the dropdown) and pass that in to the linqdatasource's selecting event? that way my logic stays logically separated...

further, after this initial search is done and results are bound to a gridview, I have several other dropdown lists that appear for search refinement. I need to keep track of that top level query, and each of the refinements... and again, right now it looks like everything is going into the linqdatasource selecting event and I get the feeling it shouldn't be... using the selecting event enables my paging and sorting to work, so I want to use that, but again, it's turning out that I'm putting *everything* there, like all the page's logic, and I'm thinking that is not good? if I could just pass in the actually query, like an IQueryable<T>, and keep my logic separated.

DataSource Controls :: Stringbuilder Not Working Inside Selecting Event?

Jan 15, 2010

I'm trying to construct one of my SQL query parameters by building a string inside the DataSource selecting event. This string will be grabbing information from various controls on the page (2 drop down menus and 1 calendar date selector). However, I found that stringbuilder doesn't work inside a selecting event. Is that normal or do I have another hidden problem??

Here is the error I'm getting:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Procedure 'spProcedure2' expects parameter '@sqlSelect', which was not supplied.

Here is my code inside the selecting event:

System.Text.StringBuilder selectValues = (System.Text.StringBuilder)ViewState["SelectedValues"];
selectValues.Append("EXEC spProcedure1 ");
ArrayList selectedDates = (ArrayList)ViewState["SelectedDates"];
if (!IsPostBack)

[Code]....

I'm using Visual Web Developer 2008 and SQL Server 2000.

DataSource Controls :: LINQDataSource Multiple WhereParameter?

Mar 23, 2011

I am trying to program the where prameters for this in code behind in C#, and is there really no way to do more than one parameter? Or am I not understanding this correctly? It seems only the 2nd parameter gets executed, no matter which one is at begining. I debug and seems they both get executed fine, but my listview doesn't get filtered and instead only the 2nd paramter works. Look at my code:

Also, if I do myLinq.Where = "division ==1 and someotherInt = 2", it works fine, but if I do two different data types, it will throw error. Since I want to filter with two different data types, hwo do I do this?

Parameter pram1 = new Parameter();
pram1.Name = "division";
pram1.DbType = DbType.Int32;

DataSource Controls :: Multiple Inserts With LinqDataSource?

Sep 4, 2010

I'm having a question about the LinqDataSource. Does anyone know if it's possible to perform multiple inserts with the LinqDataSource? Let's say for example that I have 2 tables.

Table A
AID = PK autoincrement Name AddressA FK AddressB FK
Table B
BID = PK autoincrementStreetNumberPostalCodeCountry

These tables are just examples to clarify my question. Let's say that I have a FormView with a LinqDataSource where the user can enter his name en a billing address (A) en delivery address (B). Now I would like to know if the LinqDataSource is able to insert 2 records in table B and use these ID's to insert them in table A together with the name?

DataSource Controls :: How To LinqDataSource Date Parameters

Jun 15, 2010

I need to retrieve data using a date as an input parameter. I created a WhereParameter and passed in a date value that I know to exist in the database, but no data is returned. Heres my code

[Code]....

Ive passed in '02/06/2010' as the date, in the database, the Startdate column has several values of '2010-06-02 13:08:50.503' so I guess its not being found because of the time part. Whats the best way to make sure that I retrieve the correct data ? Im not concerned about the time at all, I just need all rows for 02/06/2010.

DataSource Controls :: Get Data From A LinqDataSource From Code Behind?

Nov 18, 2010

If I have a Linqdatasource that isn't connected to a a bound control on my page how do I use the data source to read data in the code behind. ie

var query = (from x in linqdatasource select x)

What I actually want to do is create a data array (myArray) within the code, read all of the data from the linqdatasource (selecting 1 field to form tableDataArray), then compare the two arrays and then write (insert) those into in myArray that are not already in the datasource to the datasource (ie execute an insert back on the datasource).

DataSource Controls :: LinqDataSource.Select Syntax?

Jan 14, 2010

Where can I find documentation on the syntax that is expected for LinqDataSource.Select? It seems to be different from what I would do with Linq inline in C# code. For example, concatenateing something in Linq I would normally just do this in the projection:

new { FullName = (person.FirstName + " " + person.LastName ) }
However, with a LinqDataSource the only way I've found to do this is like this:
new ( String.Concat(person.FirstName, " ", person.LastName) as FullName)

I literally spent hours trying to figure this out, and only succeeded when I found a blog where someone gave this verbatim as an example. So I still don't understand why the syntax is different, the braces versus parens, aliasing, Concat operators. Next time I do this I want a better understanding so I am not playing this guessing game. It's like being handed a compiler, and trying to write a program when you don't know what language the compiler compiles.1. Are there different "flavors" of Linq? Like a VB Linq, and C# Linq?2. If so, is the LinqDataSource using a VB flavor of Linq?3. Really, what is really important to me, where can I find documentation on this particular falvor of Linq that the LinqDataSource expects? The documentation for the LinqDataSource itself gives nothing more than extremely simplistic examples.

It displays nicely but clicking update returns a "Could not determine a MetaTable" error for the datasource mapped.

THe goal is to create a single page that allows users to select a row then get the appropriate data, create an updateable formview so further edits can be done. Do not want to scaffold.
