Filtering Names On The Basis Of First Character Of The Name?

i have a page in which i am displaying the name of all the users i want to filter their names on the basis of first character for that i want to show A B C D ....X Y Z filters on the top on clicking of which it will filter the names accordingly my problem is not the query part but how to add these letters do i have to add 26 link buttons separately or there is some work around for example you might have seen such type of behavior in some music sites for filtering the songs with starting character.

I have a standard gridview, with the standard paging and sorting interface enabled.The application holds appointments for three organisational units, with a maximum of 3000 appointment records being returned across all three units. The appointment records are quite small.
The choice I am faced with is to:
1. Have an Org Unit dropdown which returns to the datasource on change of selection and at inital databind, and returns appointment records for one org unit at a time i.e. approx 1000 records.
2. Have the objectdatasource return all 3000 appointment records for all org units at initial databind, and filter the objectdatasource by org unit on change of selection, thereby saving a trip to the datasource.
I guess the question boils down to identifying the point at which querying the datasource by org unit is more efficient than filtering the records returned by org unit.
Is 3000 records a lot for a gridview to be paging and sorting etc.

I have been working with this database for some time. Here is the situation...
I inherited a MS SQL database that has hundreds of tables with similar data. For instance:
FordTampa_customer is a table,
ChevyAtlanta_customer is a table, etc....
All of the columns are the same...just different tables with their own ID field. All I have done...Inside of another database id is created a table called 'Customer' and added an 'Dealer ID' column along with the rest of the other columns in the other tables...
So the combination of the 'Dealer ID' and the 'ID' field are unique.....I know...its not the best way to do things...but I cannot change the old data structure because I cannot have access to it. I am give back-ups on a weekly basis, so this is all I have to work with.
All right, on to the real point of my post...
Currently, I have an application that I use to select all of the data from the 'Ford_customers','Chevy_customers',etc... and inserts them into my new main 'Customer' table. I do this by selecting the table names, bind it to an arraylist, loop through the list and execute an insert statement.
I do this in VB.NET, but I would prefer to do it in a Stored procedure of some kind....I just am not sure how to accomplish it. I use this syntax to get my list of tables:

I am not sure how to take those names from the table and do another select based on that list of names.

My issue is that , need to change the column name(following format "Remove first character and after 3rd character insert colon") of the gridview (which is binded with XMLTextReader). Without changing directly XML file, Required to change the column name dynamically at runtime .

I looked up the msdn documentation and it says that InvalidUserName is thrown when it does not find the username in the database, which is fine because the user I am creating should not exist in the database. If I use test@example.com, it works, but if I try it with test.@example.com, the status from Membership.CreateUser is InvalidUserName.

I have a legacy MySQL database which stores the user passwords & salts for a membership system. Both of these values have been hashed using the Ruby framework - roughly like this:

Digest::SHA1.hexdigest("#{hashedsalt}:#{password}")
So both values are stored as 40-character strings (varchar(40)) in MySQL. Now I need to import all of these users into the ASP.NET membership framework for a new web site, which uses a SQL Server database. It is my understanding that the the way I have ASP.NET membership configured, the user passwords and salts are also stored in the membership database (in table aspnet_Membership) as SHA1 hashes, which are then Base64 encoded (see here for details) and stored as nvarchar(128) data.
But from the length of the Base64 encoded strings that are stored (28 characters) it seems that the SHA1 hashes that ASP.NET membership generates are only 20 characters long, rather than 40. From some other reading I have been doing I am thinking this has to do with the number of bits per character/character set/encoding or something related.
So is there some way to convert the 40-character SHA1 hashes to 20-character hashes which I can then transfer to the new ASP.NET membership data table? I'm pretty familiar with ASP.NET membership by now but I feel like I'm just missing this one piece. However, it may also be known that SHA1 in Ruby and SHA1 in .NET are incompatible, so I'm fighting a losing battle.

I have a Class called Repository for accessing (Read/Write to and from) Database.The projects that require access to the database create an object of Repository and pass the connection string as a constructor parameter for the repository to work for that particular project.
I have few methods in the Repository that i want to be available only if certain connection strings are passed. I have a grid control where i am binding list of stickers. On the above of grid , that is out side grid i have two buttons Create Sticker and Void Sticker. Sticker basically have three properties Active , Void and Expired displayed as text in column. There is condition of adding only one sticker at a time. Also if there is an active sticker then user cannot add another sticker until and unless its is expired or void.
So what i want is that whenever my grid is loaded if there is an column with text active the the create / add sticker will get disabled and void will get enabled. I am using the folloing code

I have a check-box-List which I bind to a master dataTable(DTA)... I have another dataTable (DTB) which has the values that needs to checked in the check-box-List... So I loop through all items in the check-box-list to see if it exists in the DTB and set checked = true for those items that exists. Now I want to show the checked items first in the Check-box-list box and the unchecked items below that. Is there any way I can do it... A similar solution for List-Box could also be helpful. A Javascript hint is welcome too.

How can I remove or Dispose a session once user navigate from one page to other. I just want to use a session which should expire when user navigate to other page..its same like view state..we don't get viewstate information on page to page. why session: i need to keep one value on page constant on page refresh where as Viewstate will be reset to null on page refresh...and i just don't want to use that session once user navigate to other pages.. where i need to plcae the session dispose in page events or methods?..or is there any way to keep viewstate on page refresh?

in my web appliaction there are many pages which use data from backend . and all these pages run according user login in application.every user gat different data according data availability for particular user .And data is not static for user in database it can be update ,delete,and may be new data inserted for user, frequently . in this case roundtrip for data on sql serverv increased and it cause of load on sql server. in this csae i want to implement caching on my pages. I required to load dropdown with the section name on the basis of UserProfile when the page load anytime.
The dropdown is bounded by sqldatasource configured to TblSections.
TblSections with datafields sectionId(numeric) and Description.
There is another table Users with field sectionId and UProfile.
There is a gridview grvResult bounded by objecdatasource configured to TblFltReg.
TblFltReg has field Owner(numeric).
Actually Owner and SectionId are same.
I don't know how to do this task.
