Forms Authentication For Different Roles?
Sep 7, 2010
I am developing a website in which i am using forms authentication. We have 2 log in pages.one for user another for admin. I added this code into webconfig file for user.
<forms loginUrl="Login.aspx" defaultUrl="Home.aspx" >
I am using this code for user side when user successfully logged in.
FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage (UserName.Text, chkPersistCookie.Checked)
I am not using the default user membership database.i have my own data base in sql server 2005 I want same thing for admin,but the default url is Admin.aspx & login url is adminlogin.aspx for admin. How can i assign in web config file for admin?

I am not really sure if this post should go in the Security section or the Active Directory / LDAP section....with that being said I am looking for advice on how to best accomplish my goal(s), I am working with FORMS authentication, using active directory (across 2 domains). I have got authenticating working correctly based upon the article at: [URL] now - my questions:
1. What is the best way to deal with roles? What I would like to do is restrict access to my application so that only the users that are authorized to use the application can login - not everyone in the AD. My gut feeling tells me I would use an AD group for this. Furthermore, a subset of these users in this group will be allowed to access the data maintenance forms
2. Ideally, in a perfect world, I would like to write this authentication piece as a separate project - this way it could be used for multiple projects - the only thing different would be the AD groups it would be checking. Is there a way that I could set which AD groups or roles in each projects web.config?
Am I approaching this the correct way? What is typically done?

I am currently having a spot of bother in something im trying to create. I want it so when a user who is in a certain role logs in they are directed to a certain page, and any other normal users are directed to another page.
I think i have this sorted via code but...
-The first time it will work, the 'admin' user will get directed to the appropriate page
-I then log out and log in as a normal user and get directed to the appropriate page
-then when i log out of that users account and back into the admin one i get directed to the normal users page instead.
-additional to this, I tried it on a different machine logging in as the admin user only to be redirected to the normal users page (is my session being stored somewhere?)
Ive traced through the problem and the user name and password being subbmitted are what they should be, yet it skips the true part of my IF statement for being in that role.
Here is my code I am using on the login form:
[Code]....
-When stepping through if seen it work and not work with the same values, I cant understand the logic of its inconsistency
the code i am using for the logout is (this is on my masterpage):

I have the requirement for internal users to acces our web app without loggin in manually so using windows authentication, external users need to be refered to a form based authentication.
Now I have implemented the solution [URL] ....
However I also need to employ roles for authorization. The forms side is all set up but I cannot seem to get it to work for the windows side of things, looking for implementing a mixed mode involving roles?
I tried adding in an extra provider
<providers>
<add name="SqlRoleManager" type="System.Web.Security.SqlRoleProvider" connectionStringName="aspnetdbConnection_dev" applicationName="Corp.Web.GSP"/>
but how to configure it for usse only by the windows users. Secondly if I set it as the default where I have code like
if (Roles.IsUserInRole("Internal") || Roles.IsUserInRole("SysAdmin") || Roles.IsUserInRole("Sales"))
{
I get an
Method is only supported if the user name parameter matches the user name in the current Windows Identity error
<add name="WindowsRoleProvider" type="System.Web.Security.WindowsTokenRoleProvider" />

how to implement role based security in asp.net 4.0, in detail. Like from Data base to UI. how I wanted to implement. On page Load, drop will be filled with all available roles, with list of all check boxes(basically it will equal to the no. of links on the left side tree) below, I will select required boxes and then save. If that particular user with that role logged in, then we will load only those links which this role is having ( of course we will assign that user with the spefic role).

I am developing a website in which I am using ASP.NET Form Authentication and everything is working fine as I am expecting. I can authenticate user from login form, I can read user roles from database and can add authenticate ticket in which user roles are stored as user data etc. etc.
Now I want to give user a page where user can update his roles in the database by selecting any role he/she want from the list of checkboxes. I know how to update the user roles in database but I want to know how to update user roles in the authentication cookie after database update.
Let's say in the start user is in "Seller" and "Buyer" role and later he want to become member of "Agent" role as well and he update his roles from the given page and everything is updated in database. Now according to database user is member of three roles but User.IsInRole("Agent") method is returning me false because the new role "Agent" is not updating in the authentication cookie.
How can I update a newly added role in authentication cookie when user is still logged in.

I am using ASP.NET MVC 3 and am trying to do something that should be really straight forward...
My application uses Forms authentication and that is working perfectly for controllers/actions. For example if I decorate either a controller or an action with the attribute below only members of the administrators group can view them:
[Authorize(Roles="Administrators")]
However I have a folder under the default Scripts folder called Admin. I only want members of the Administrators group to be able to access scripts within this directory so I created a new web.config in the directory with the following inside:
[code]....
However no matter whether a user is a member of the Administrators group or not they receive a 302 Found message and are then redirected to the login page.
If I change the web.config to allow user="*" then it works. It also works if I add an allow users="Username" for a specific user I am testing with.

Let's say I have a rolegroup as follows:
<asp:LoginView ID="lvDoSomeStuff" runat="server">
<RoleGroups>
<asp:RoleGroup Roles="RoleOne,RoleTwo">
<ContentTemplate>
...
</ContentTemplate>
</asp:RoleGroup>
</RoleGroups>
</asp:LoginView>
Is there a way I can make it so that a user must meet RoleOne and RoleTwo to satisfy the RoleGroup? By default, if a user is in either of the two roles, they will be granted access. I know I can do this via the code-behind, but I'd prefer to be able to wrap some content template with this markup instead of having to wrap it in a panel and hide the panel programmatically.

i want to implement asp.net role provider to assign users over my LAN to roles and have my asp.net intranet app implement security based on roles.
i dont want to use VS to manage this with the built in tools but rather hand this off to users to manage themselves. i want an admin folder with a page(s) for admin roles to be able to create/edit roles and manage users in roles... this way an admin can add a domain user (MyDomainUsername) to a role such as ProojectManager or Tester or Developer... and users wont need to contact me for these tasks...
can anyone provide me a link (or some sample code) to some sample i can use to admin roles and users over a LAN in asp.net with c#?

Newb question: what is the standard practice for assigning roles to newly signed-on members. Is it usually manual or is there a way of automatically assigning roles. Being completely new to this, I am confronted by the issue of my site having three different roles that new members could fall into, but am unsure about how to assign each a role. I can't imagine having to go through the process manually if I have thousands of members.

I have run into a problem where I need to remove certain items from collections that seem to only have get all functions.
My Idea is to get the full collection and then remove the unneeded items. Then take that new collection and bind it to whatever I need.
For example How do I get all the roles except administrator?
Roles strRoles = Roles.GetAllRoles()
RoleList.DataSource = (Roles) roles; //Roles.GetAllRoles();
RoleList.DataBind();
or How do I get all users but say user123
MembershipUserCollection users = Membership.GetAllUsers();
UserList.DataSource = users;
UserList.DataBind();

'm using the AutoCompleteExtender from the AJAX control toolkit on my aspx page - I have it wired up to a WCF service that is returning a string array and everything works happily.
If I change my service definition to include a demand for the caller to be authenticated, like so:
<OperationContract(), PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, Authenticated:=True)> _Public Function GetLookupValues(ByVal prefixText As String, ByVal count As Integer, ByVal contextKey As String) As String()
Then the autocomplete extender stops working, and I get an authentication error in the service. The service is set up to use ASPNetCompatibility mode, and I was hoping that the extender would pass the authentication credentials for my logged in user - does anyone know how to make this work?

I have developed the authenticated rss feed using the basic http authentication for my site.I also have the admin module for the site which uses the Asp.net Forms Authentication .Both are in the same project.When i turn on the forms authentication module to None in my web.config.My rss feed authentication works fine(the browser pop up the dialog box for the username and password) and upon entering the username and password the rss feed gets displayed.But with forms authentication turn on when i click the rss feed link i am getting redirected to the administrator login page.
If i set my authentication mode to none than the feed works like dream but the admin module do not work as it uses forms authentication.
How can i resolve the conflict for that one.I am using the asp.net mvc filter on my feed contoller to pop up the dialog box for the username and password.

I have an (ASP.NET 3.5) intranet application which has been designed to use forms authentication (along with the default aspnet membership system). I also store additional information about users in another table which shares its primary key with the aspnet_users table.
For users who are part of our domain I store their domain account name in the secondary users table, and I want to automatically log in users whose domain account name matches a name stored in the table.
I have read the guides which are available - they're all from two years ago or more and assume that you are able to activate Windows Authentication on a separate login page that allows you to extract the domain account name. From what I can tell, though, this is not possible in IIS7 (the overall authentication method is applied on all pages and cannot be selectively deactivated, and both authentication methods can't be applied on the same page).
Is there a way of getting IIS to pass through the windows domain account name of the requesting user? I don't need proper AD authentication, just the domain name.

We have a non-SSL ASP.NET web app that allows a user to login (ASP forms authentication, inproc).
Once authenticated, we redirect their browser to an external, SSL secured page on another web site / domain altogether that we do not control.
The client is redirected back to a pre-configured url on our original http web app when done.
However, the customer is then asked to "re-login" again on our side which is undesired...
It seems the forms authentication cookie is destroyed when transitioning between HTTP and HTTPS and back again.
How can I keep the forms authentication cookie alive so that the customer does not have to re-authenticate on the round trip?

I'm developing an internal booking sytem. Users log in to the sytem and can view existing bookings and search for bookings. They can also create new or edit existing bookings. When completing such actions I need a confirmation prior to completing the booking or updating the recorded. The confirmation is based on a reauthentication of the user.... in otherwords he needs to enter his passord again.
How can I achieve this? The system is internam and I'm using Forms Authentication. I an also using roles as som of the admin forms can only be viewed by administrators.

This could be very straight forward for some of you, but I got caught up. I am doing very simple test - browsing from IIS Manager to see the default page or "under Construction", however I am being challenged to provide my login credential . When I provide my login credential, I am able to see the default page. I wanted to see the default page without providing my credential since Enable anoymous access + basic authentication I am simply wanted to see the default page asit is working on other servers except this one. I have included screen print to make sure may question is clear.
