Newb question: what is the standard practice for assigning roles to newly signed-on members. Is it usually manual or is there a way of automatically assigning roles. Being completely new to this, I am confronted by the issue of my site having three different roles that new members could fall into, but am unsure about how to assign each a role. I can't imagine having to go through the process manually if I have thousands of members.

This is my senario. I want user to login and if "LoggedIn" User has more than one role then it displays the list of radio buttons. After selection of the role user gets further privilages according to the role that he has selected.
I've a problem setting up the role. And user can change his role when ever he wants.
For Example "john" is the user having two roles "Account Manager" and "Project Manager".

Now I need every user to be able to log in to all the applications, but have a seperate role in each.Is this possible(I dont want to duplicate user details or logins for the same person)?

I'm planning to make a page that has about 10 different pages for varying use, for example, stats, data entry, reports, logistics, audit, sales, promo, etc etc. I'm anticipating there will be many combinations as to what pages a user may have access to, for each page, a user ought to be authorized to either enter new data, edit data, print and/or just view.
My questions are :
1. can membership & roles be used, once user is logged in, to display links to all the areas of the web app he is allowed access to?
[code]....
2. besides having access to a particular page, a user should, as mentioned before, be authorized to either enter new, edit, print and/or just view data.
3. Is there a preferred/better method to handle this besides using membership & roles?

I have users that belong to more than one role and I have a login view for those roles but I only see the first role's content.
How should I be going about getting to see all content for the roles that user is in? My user logs in and is a member of MACED and ADMIN but only sees the links for MACED

I have a web.config file with <authorization> section. I'm using window authentication.
The problem is that I would like to allow access to the web site to those users who are in multiple roles.
For example:
<authorization>
<allow roles = "Role1 AND Role2"/>
<deny users="*"/>
</authorization>
(Meaning I would like to allow access only to those user who are both in Role1 AND Role2.)
Is this possible to achive this?
If not, what would be the alternatives?
Note: Currently I'm doing the roles assignment in the Global.asax file in the OnAuthenticateRequest event (i'm reading the groups that the current user belong to in the Active Directory).

I wanted to maintain the great features of ASP security control but i couldn't find a way to fit my purposes. I wanted to add in multiple user in one shot instead of one by one, So far using CreateUserWizard control only allow admin to add user once at a time. Is there a way to add in multiple user with a uploaded name list ?

Let's say I have a rolegroup as follows:
<asp:LoginView ID="lvDoSomeStuff" runat="server">
<RoleGroups>
<asp:RoleGroup Roles="RoleOne,RoleTwo">
<ContentTemplate>
...
</ContentTemplate>
</asp:RoleGroup>
</RoleGroups>
</asp:LoginView>
Is there a way I can make it so that a user must meet RoleOne and RoleTwo to satisfy the RoleGroup? By default, if a user is in either of the two roles, they will be granted access. I know I can do this via the code-behind, but I'd prefer to be able to wrap some content template with this markup instead of having to wrap it in a panel and hide the panel programmatically.

i want to implement asp.net role provider to assign users over my LAN to roles and have my asp.net intranet app implement security based on roles.
i dont want to use VS to manage this with the built in tools but rather hand this off to users to manage themselves. i want an admin folder with a page(s) for admin roles to be able to create/edit roles and manage users in roles... this way an admin can add a domain user (MyDomainUsername) to a role such as ProojectManager or Tester or Developer... and users wont need to contact me for these tasks...
can anyone provide me a link (or some sample code) to some sample i can use to admin roles and users over a LAN in asp.net with c#?

I have a bunch of divs that are widgets. I am using a custom role provider and I need to hide the divs based on roles. Is it better to add a "runat=server" attribute to the div so that I can hide/unhide in the code behind? Should I hide/unhide on the aspx page or do i use panel controls and hide/unhide in the code behind?

I have run into a problem where I need to remove certain items from collections that seem to only have get all functions.
My Idea is to get the full collection and then remove the unneeded items. Then take that new collection and bind it to whatever I need.
For example How do I get all the roles except administrator?
Roles strRoles = Roles.GetAllRoles()
RoleList.DataSource = (Roles) roles; //Roles.GetAllRoles();
RoleList.DataBind();
or How do I get all users but say user123
MembershipUserCollection users = Membership.GetAllUsers();
UserList.DataSource = users;
UserList.DataBind();

I have a custom menu, which leverages the standard asp.net sitemap. It works well but some of my pages are dynamically generated by URL rewriter, so they don't sit in the sitemap XML file. At the moment I rolled a custom solution which shows/hides menu items via CSS class and a programmatic check of the role that the user is in. It works ok until I visit a dynamic page that doesn't exist in the sitemap file. I've tried the "roles" attribute in the sitemap file with security trimming but it isn't working because I have a custom menu.
Is there a way I could leverage the roles attribute in the sitemap file to show/hide menu items for my custom control below, even when some pages are not in the sitemap? My menu control is below...
<div class="menu">
<ul>
<asp:Repeater ID="rpt" runat="server" DataSourceID="smdsMenuPrimary"
EnableViewState="False">
<ItemTemplate>
<li class="<%#GetDisplayClass((SiteMapNode)Container.DataItem)%>"><a href='<%# ((SiteMapNode)Container.DataItem).Url %>'><%# ((SiteMapNode)Container.DataItem).Title %></a></li>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:Repeater>
</ul>

Is it possible to specify that multiple roles are required inside the authorization element of the web.config file? I currently have this block in one web.config of my site for a specific directory:
<authorization>
<allow roles="Global, Region" />
<deny users="*" />
</authorization>
I've just identified a special case where a person with two lower-level permissions than Global and Region should also have access to this directory. Roughly, I want something like this:
<authorization>
<allow roles="GlobalManager, RegionManager, SiteManager && FooSite" />
<deny users="*" />
</authorization>
I realize I probably should have a new role for this scenario, but I'd like to avoid that.

[ASP.NET 3.5, FormsAuthentication, SQL Server]
In the Roles table there is Role, and RoleType.
I have 3different roles, 2 of which have sub-roles.
Example
Role----------------------Type
Adminstrator
Subscriber---Basic
Subscriber---Business
I need to implement Code Access Security, and URL based security using the roles & types...
For instance, the (Subscriber/Basic) would need to view a different set of pages, and have different access to things then a (Subscriber/Business).
I think I can handle the Code Access security with a custom attribute, but I am unsure to how enforce a User be apart of 2 roles in the URL Authorization.
I am currently using the web.config to deny/allow access to the directories/pages.
e.g.
/Areas/Admin/web.config
[Code]....
Is it possible to force the user to be apart of 2 roles with this technique?

I have used .net login control to authenticate user,i have three types of role ,role1,role2 and role3 and i have users and user have different roles.
now my requirement is like as per loggedin user i want to redirect user on particular page as per role.
for example if loggedin user role is role1 than he will redirect default1.aspx
for example if loggedin user role is role2 than he will redirect default2.aspx
for example if loggedin user role is role3 than he will redirect default3.aspx
and one question if same user may be have more than one role than what should happen???
I got a solution for same than if we are used "loggingin" event than it would be possible but i had placed login control in login view anonymous template because as per my requirement i want that after successfull login user can't see login control on page.thats why i didn't get the login control event on code.

In our system now, we have a class of user and beneath each class, there's a type of user.
Is there a way to setup and use the ASP.Net role provider with this kind of setup?

i want to create a webservice that reading from the user identity interacts with a db, where there are app names and group that can use that app, and gives to the user a list of operation that he can use.
My question is, is there any table in apsnetdb that does this association or i should create a costum table.
